AIBU to not get why everyone seems to hate lanyards?

Sort of re the pockets thread - I keep my work pass round my neck on a lanyard I was given with the pass for the purpose. This means I always have it so can get through the building easily, never lose it, don't have to carry it in a bag (or pocket!) etc.

I am however in a minority. Everyone else at work including my dh seems to go to great lengths to hide them - putting them in wallets, keeping them in bags, leavim them on desks etc. On the odd occasion I've caught someone wearing one, they've turned the card round in the little bracket do you can't see the photo. I mean your face is right there at the top of your neck, what do you think you are hiding??

Why do folk hate on the lanyard??

I'm so ridiculously happy to have a job, after being turned back for three years, and I'm in my DREAM JOB - I wear mine with enormous pride, happiness and I'll whoop whoop every day I clip my ID to my uniform. I'm so thrilled.. I can't believe i'm so lucky to get this job working in University sports. I LOVE swiping my ID to get in to buildings and meeting rooms. 3 years of desperate unemployment will do that to you. I'm just lucky that someone i met 20 years ago reached out to me for a job. I'm 51, so these opportunities don't come that easily. So grateful.

No idea why but that made me lol!

Lanyards are useful and I like them. However some people find things around there neck annoying and hate it hanging when they lean forward.

The extendable keychains (plastic ones from pound shop/ market) are a great alternative. Just home lunch the corner of the card if it's not in a plastic case.

HebeMumsnet · 30/04/2019 16:16

I do think they're strange when I see people wearing them on the street or while perusing the sandwiches in M&S.

I can't help but read them and make judgements mentally. 'Crikey.. never have had you pegged for a 'Maud'. And you really don't look like you work at an equine vet's.... Hope you've washed your hands well before you started poking about in the pre-packaged pasta salads...'

youarenotkiddingme · 30/04/2019 16:16

Some people can also use the right their in a sentence too

Apparently I'm not one of them 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

funnelfanjo · 30/04/2019 16:21

hate them for bouncing around and hitting the desk and getting in the way. We have biometric scanners at work instead of having to carry passes as you're less likely to lose your thumb than your lanyard.

SweetestThing · 30/04/2019 16:23

We have a number of tenants in our office building and we're in central London, not far from the scene of several terrorist attacks, so for security reasons we ask everyone, staff and visitors, to wear their passes visibly so we can see if someone isn't supposed to be in the building at all, or on a particular floor. I'd rather have a dodgy photo of me round my neck than be in a building where people aren't expected to wear ID and so strangers aren't challenged.

exWifebeginsat40 · 30/04/2019 16:36

way back in the mists of time, i worked in an office where we had little grey tags which beeped us into, and out of the building.

the receptionist was Very Strict, and if you forgot your beeper you had to sign the Naughty Employee register and were at the mercy of reception if you wanted to get out at any point during the day.

forgetting your beeper meant that reception were desperately inconvenienced by having to press a button to unlock the door. punishment was exacted by two middle-aged ladies studiously ignoring loud knocks on the glass, frantic waving or a Director actually jumping up and down a bit.

fuck beepers. i would have loved a lanyard. sadly, i will never know the secret joy of having one. i too would wear it EVERYWHERE.

lanyards. what a time to be alive.

pissedonatrain · 30/04/2019 16:36

I'm used to them so it doesn't bother me. Having a bunch of swipe cards is much better than the giant set of keys I used to have to lug around.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/04/2019 16:36

My photo is relatively flattering but I don't like things round my neck and also I'm a person not a number...:o

I feel like I should be the queen and float through on my own recognisance.

Some people in my work have the clip to the trousers with a retractable stretchy thing but I don't like those either - i'm a pocket or purse person.

Margot33 · 30/04/2019 16:37

I used to wear mine around my neck too. It was kept in the car at the end if my shift. My colleague refused to wear hers as it would literally bounce off her big chest! This meant she was always losing it though.

PlanBea · 30/04/2019 16:38

I need to wear my pass at all times for security, and due to the nature of my work people will challenge people without it (even people they know). My lanyard also snaps into pieces so no risk of getting strangled with it - though bloody annoying when it catches against my desk and pops off.

We're also not allowed to wear them out of the building for safety, so it goes straight in the bag when I'm out of the office or secure yard!

For those that don't take them off on the commute to and from work.

Spudlet · 30/04/2019 16:42

Where I used to work, everyone got a standard badge on a lanyard to buzz in and out. But if you were doing lots of Parliamentary work, you might also get a second card to get in and out of the Palace of Westminster, and attach that to your lanyard as well, for double clattering and annoyance. I did get one for a bit and was quite pleased, as the photo on my parly pass was a lot nicer than the one on my staff one!

I used to have it in my bag with the lanyard looped around the strap so it was quick to find. Never liked wearing one.

Pharlapwasthebest · 30/04/2019 16:42

Constantly hitting small children on the head with mine when I lean down to talk to them!

BertieBotts · 30/04/2019 16:52

I used to have one at my retail job

Ronsters · 30/04/2019 16:55

I don't wear mine, no other reason than I just don't like it. I keep my pass on my desk or in my handbag. If I put the pass in a front pocket of my bag I can just hold the handbag to the door thing and it still opens it.

CMOTDibbler · 30/04/2019 17:07

I work from home, so don't need one unless visiting the offices when I choose a retractable clip thingy - my uk office one has a 13 year old picture, taken when I had just popped in with my very brand new baby.
At conferences, they are usually a total nuisance, but one conference I go to have this little pouch with your card on which is fab as it is big enough for a tissue/lipstick/pen/business cards and so saves me the no pocket issue. If they weren't so branded I would use them for anything that needed a badge!

QuestionableMouse · 30/04/2019 17:10

I hate them because they catch on things. My uni one lives attached to my bag so I know where it is but I've never worn it.

MaisondeChats · 30/04/2019 17:11

I have mine on a clip now as work with small children and was forever getting my lanyard tangled in girls' hair when leaning over to help them with something.

Wifeofapostie · 30/04/2019 17:12

Love or hate them, please don’t wear them while driving (or front passenger) there is a chance that if the airbag deploys, the ID badge part can cause chest wall trauma and pneumothorax.

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/04/2019 17:13

doesnt bother me in the slightest. And they are not a strangulation hazard as they are all made with the safety clasp.

And if I am wearing mine out and about its because I have either forgotten I have it on or because I am just popping out for something so no point in taking it off and on.

I have had my purse stolen in the past so sorting out security keys etc is far more faff than just wearing the lanyard!

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 30/04/2019 17:25

I don’t mind mine, it opens doors and makes the photocopy go ping.

It’s not an official NHS one though.

I do forget it’s there and go home wearing it and if anybody notices, it will just make them think I work for Vault-tec.

M4J4 · 30/04/2019 17:33

Yep, just tested mine and I didn't have to pull it very hard for the safety clasp to open.

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/04/2019 17:38

I hate then, anything around my neck with any weight brings back awful memories for me. They're not memories I want to discuss at work either.

Holibobsing · 30/04/2019 17:40

bollockstobrexit got visions of him wearing it in shower and other private positions - apologies for the intrusive thoughts.
