AIBU to not get why everyone seems to hate lanyards?

Sort of re the pockets thread - I keep my work pass round my neck on a lanyard I was given with the pass for the purpose. This means I always have it so can get through the building easily, never lose it, don't have to carry it in a bag (or pocket!) etc.

I am however in a minority. Everyone else at work including my dh seems to go to great lengths to hide them - putting them in wallets, keeping them in bags, leavim them on desks etc. On the odd occasion I've caught someone wearing one, they've turned the card round in the little bracket do you can't see the photo. I mean your face is right there at the top of your neck, what do you think you are hiding??

Why do folk hate on the lanyard??

We are required to wear them at all times during working hours on site (school). Visitors have different colours to staff and they differentiate between are/aren't DBS checked. We are required to challenge any adult on site without a lanyard displaying their id for safeguarding reasons.

It's not a biggie. Has my name and role on it. Can't understand the point of providing employees with a lanyard/id badge if you don't care enough to make them wear it, what's the point?

TheBouquets · 30/04/2019 17:44

It is a mystery to me why people think they should wear lanyards and ID badges as they go round the local supermarket. Is their occupation the definition of their lives? When they leave work they stop being "insert occupation" In the supermarket, they are just another shopper or a mum and shopper if they have already picked up DC.
The other thing I don't like is nurses in the supermarket is their scrub uniforms. Heaven knows what germs they could be carrying or alternatively they could bring allergens to patients.
In my job, I kept my ID out of sight and only showed it to people who needed to see it.

BringOnTheScience · 30/04/2019 17:54

I love my lanyard. Anyone who sees me at work knows I love my badge collection! I feel odd without it.

BollocksToBrexit · 30/04/2019 18:03

bollockstobrexit got visions of him wearing it in shower and other private positions - apologies for the intrusive thoughts.

He sometimes reads threads on MN, don't be giving him ideas! Shock

Isleepinahedgefund · 30/04/2019 18:34

It was a sad day for me when we were instructed to wear them at all times on pain of death. I still mind now, I hate feeling so... at work-ish!

We are also instructed on pain of death not to have them on display at all when we're out of the building

We can't get in and out of the building without ours, and it's a hell of a pullaver if you forget it. To get out without your pass, you have to show your pass to show you were allowed to be in the building in the first place! It gets terribly confusing, but as no one ever, ever seems to forget their passes, it has obviously proved very effective.

Mine has 2 locations. Round my neck or in the key drawer at home. If I took it off I’d lose it. So I do the supermarket, school pick up, everything else in it as I don’t want to spend 10 mins shivering at the back gate to work in the morning waiting for some randomer to arrive so I can slip in with them.

I wish they’d make ones that never catch on jumpers though. I’ve got bobbly bits on my nice work jumpers where the tag goes.

KnitterOfSocks · 30/04/2019 18:42

I sometimes have mine on outside of work simply because I'm so used to it being there that I forget to take it off. Plus I'm prone to putting it down in random place and losing it, and I can't get my car back without it, so I just leave it on. Then it stays in the car but if I'm shopping in my lunch break I will still be wearing it.

bordellosboheme · 30/04/2019 18:43

I love mine. Putting it round my neck gets me in work mode. Psychologically it tells me I'm in professional mode and taki git off means the day is finished.. Also it means I get in all the doors easily...

notangelinajolie · 30/04/2019 18:46

I really don't like them. If you have to wear them then please just wear them at work. In my head I think people who wear them outside of the workplace ie Tesco on the way home from work or picking the kids up from school are saying "hey, look at me I'm important - I've got a job. When in fact they just make themselves look like total prats.

xsquared · 30/04/2019 18:47

They are a hazard and they get in the way. Mine gets caught when I am shutting drawers at putting tables together.

It's also awkward going to the toilet with it on. Either I have to take it off and hang it on the door or tuck it under my chin when I squat so that it doesn't dangle.

ForalltheSaints · 30/04/2019 18:47

I don't wear one. Keep all passes in one place in my pocket. Don't want to lose them, and don't want people on the train to know my identity (too many people have them visible, making them more vulnerable to identity theft or unwanted attention).

hazell42 · 30/04/2019 18:48

5 years in my job and I never once wore mine, despite it being mandatory.
Hated it.
Makes you look like a prize dick.
Totally unnecessary. It was a small company. Everyone knew each other. And when I went to an outside meeting they were expecting me, so they knew me too.
Sometimes I would go somewhere and be given a visitors one. No name, just the word visitor in giant letters. Didnt wear them either, bit I was born being awkward

EdWinchester · 30/04/2019 18:50

We have to wear them at all times.

We also have to wear a bright blue corporate strap. I have given up trying to look put together at work.

yellowellies · 30/04/2019 18:50

We’re not allowed to have extra stuff on the lanyard with our ID pass, but this means I have an extra lanyard with a bunch of keys on it. Sometimes this may be in a pocket if I’m wearing jeans, but in leggings today so it was round my neck. Ours also have 3 break points so we can’t be strangled with them.
The management alternate between telling us they have to be on display so people know we are authorised to be there, and hiding them so the service users don’t try to grab them!

ScrewyMcScrewup · 30/04/2019 18:57

Most people at my workplace wear them around their neck. Nobody seems to hate them.

Maybe this is because ours don't have photos on?

RezCowgirl · 30/04/2019 19:00

Lady in my office has a coat hanger full of different colour lanyards to behind her desk so she can colour coordinate with whatever top she's wearing. She wears a special diamante one if she has important meetings that day.

100Birds · 30/04/2019 19:10

I wear mine as there is a genuine risk of getting stuck in the staff stairwell until someone lets you out otherwise! It doesn’t physically bother me, but I do have colleagues who don’t like them and roll them up and put them in their pockets.

Polarbearflavour · 30/04/2019 19:28

Years ago, a friend of mine was working in M&S food hall. One woman with a lanyard was really rude to her and said something along the lines of “you wear a name badge, I wear a lanyard because.” Confused

There is still a strange perception that an office administrator on 18k is somehow “better” or higher up the food chain than a retail worker on 15k. Minimum wage is catching up with clerical jobs though!

PinkOboe · 30/04/2019 19:28

We were warned not to wear them when driving as a few people have been injured by them in crashes. Perforated bowels stuck in my mind Confused

Doodlebug5 · 30/04/2019 19:35

I dont wear mine purely because I have psoriasis around my neck. Its company policy that you wear them at our place though and a warning if you are caught without them

hsegfiugseskufh · 30/04/2019 19:38

Mine gets trapped between me and my desk so when i move i get strangled. No fun.

Ive also found myself forgetting to take it off when i leave and trying to open my car / front door with it which just makes me look a twat!

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/04/2019 19:38

i'm lucky to be tall so that I can keep mine in my trouser pocket and just "present" my pocket to the reader at the door. Mad when you've shoved it in your purse for a change and are standing jumping about at the door trying to get your pocket to beep the door open when it's not in your pocket :)

Whatistheworldcominto · 30/04/2019 19:38

I need access to various areas of the building during my shift, and though there's a stock of keys at reception you can guarantee the one you pick up has stopped working! I wear mine as soon as I get to work with the key in it so I get around easily without endless trips back to reception. Also means in the event of a fire I can respond immediately to investigate without galloping back to reception first. It gets caught on everything, so I wear it inside my shirt out of the way but there when needed.

Witchtower · 30/04/2019 19:42

I love mine!!

But I also have to wear it due to access and safeguarding. I wouldn’t be able to slip it in my pocket.

MulticolourMophead · 30/04/2019 19:54

We're supposed to wear them at work, but a good number, including me, don't.

If I wear one, it bounces on my tits, and when I sit at my desk, it's the wrong length and I'll catch the badge under the desk when I sit up, causing it to yank my head down.

It normally sits in a pocket in my bag, and I take it out and carry it if I need to to to the couple of areas that require the pass to get through.

We need the pass to enter the building, they have those RFID scanners things in them. I can hold my bag up to the scanner thing on the door and it can scan my card while it's in my bag.
