AIBU to not get why everyone seems to hate lanyards?

Sort of re the pockets thread - I keep my work pass round my neck on a lanyard I was given with the pass for the purpose. This means I always have it so can get through the building easily, never lose it, don't have to carry it in a bag (or pocket!) etc.

I am however in a minority. Everyone else at work including my dh seems to go to great lengths to hide them - putting them in wallets, keeping them in bags, leavim them on desks etc. On the odd occasion I've caught someone wearing one, they've turned the card round in the little bracket do you can't see the photo. I mean your face is right there at the top of your neck, what do you think you are hiding??

Why do folk hate on the lanyard??

Wasn't there something in the press recently about how much of a hazard they can be if you're in a car & the air bag goes off?

BollocksToBrexit · 30/04/2019 15:34

He wears it all the bloody time, even weekends, 'so that it doesn't get lost'. FFS!

shock even in bed?

He hangs it on the bedpost.

MrsMozartMkII · 30/04/2019 15:34

Hate wearing them. They pull on my neck.

I'll usually loop it around a trouser belt loop so I have it but it's not giving me neck ache.

BollocksToBrexit · 30/04/2019 15:36

What?? So you go out for a nice dinner on a Saturday night and he's got his bloody work lanyard round his neck?

Yep, he looks like a right dickhead, but he doesn't care.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 30/04/2019 15:36

I wear my work pass on an extendable cord attached to my waistband (usually wear jeans/trousers to work). I hate having it round my neck! It always seems to get in the way, clatter against the desk etc. I also have my card turned round as I hate my photo, my actual face is much nicer!

Namestheyareachangin · 30/04/2019 15:36

@bollockstobrexit this is brilliant. Real commitment to the lanyard!!

Ok, you're going to have to LTB !

DirtyDennis · 30/04/2019 15:38

@BolllockstoBrexit Shock Your DH's lanyard obsession is one of the most distressing things I've read on MN. You need to LTB immediately.

clairemcnam · 30/04/2019 15:39

I just don't like being tagged like this. I keep it on my work bag and only get it out when I need it.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 30/04/2019 15:41

This and the guy wearing his lanyard to dinner made me Grin

We have to wear our ID as a clip badge. Non clinical staff can wear a lanyard but must clip it if entering a clinical setting.
I have my name embroidered on my uniform, sometimes I feel like scrawling it on my forehead.

woollyheart · 30/04/2019 15:41

I've had to wear them at work - and yes, they are much more comfortable if you wear them over a shirt with a collar. We were instructed to accost anyone not visibly wearing one, so there was no getting away with hiding it.

codenameduchess · 30/04/2019 15:41

I don't like wearing mine because it's itchy on the back of my neck, and when leaving the building I don't like people knowing where I work. I work for a publicly funded company who provide a service to the local area, we often have customers in reception booting off and threatening staff so I'd rather not advertise myself.

@BollocksToBrexit your husbands obsession is the strangest thing I've read today 😂 does anyone comment or ask about it?

WallisFrizz · 30/04/2019 15:42

Tbh, mine doesn’t bother me anymore. At my work place we have to wear them at all times for security reasons and we’ve got used to them.

The only time it really pissed me off was when I was suffering bad morning sickness, bent over the toilet, it dropped forward and I puked all over it 🤮

M4J4 · 30/04/2019 15:42

It's like an appendage. Without my lanyard/ID card, I can't enter work buildings, buy food or a coffee, print, photocopy, etc

DGRossetti · 30/04/2019 15:42

It's amazing how many places you can go with a lanyard on. My old work ID (which was just a white rectangle with my photo on it) was a magic pass in our local hospital as long as I carried my laptop under one arm.

I dread to think how far I could have if I'd added a white coat.

JAMMFYesPlease · 30/04/2019 15:42

I dont have a lanyard for work but I use them all the time for conventions and events. I have my own personalized lanyard to add personality. The only thing I don't like is the fear of it getting caught and strangling me but it's an irrational fear really. They are so handy, especially when I have my hands full!

Angie169 · 30/04/2019 15:43

I have to wear one at work and use it to get through EVERY single door from my desk to the kitchen is 5 doors but only about 60 foot.
Like PP I wear mine on a zip line attached to my belt .
If I go to one of our other 6 sites I get given a generic one without a zip line and the lanyard is always filthy. I refuse to wear them round my neck

BollocksToBrexit · 30/04/2019 15:43

To be fair to DH, he does have autism and his lanyard has a high security pass card in it. No card means no access to the lab and having to report it as a security breach. He does genuinely completely freak out if he doesn't know where it is.

TheOmega · 30/04/2019 15:43

We have to wear ours at all times at work (NHS office worker) It has full name and job title on and is also a swipe card to get into the department and office doors.

SoHotADragonRetired · 30/04/2019 15:44

Wearing it on the weekend is hilarious!

I hate lanyards because they mess up the necklines of my tops and because I like statement necklaces. I use a badge reel on my pocket/a belt loop.

Alsohuman · 30/04/2019 15:44

Bloody pointless things, they make me feel like Paddington.

LemonBreeland · 30/04/2019 15:46

Mine has the photo on both sides, so no hiding from the hideous photo. We also have to wear them at work. We would be pulled up if not wearing it.

ItsAllGone19 · 30/04/2019 15:48

I hate wearing mine...the length means it sits right in the middle of my breasts, except there's no room there for it to hide so it just bounces around until I lose all patience and fling the thing across the room again and get told off for removing my pass!

Purpleartichoke · 30/04/2019 15:49

I hate the weight of it on my neck. I prefer to clip to my clothes when possible.

But having is displayed prominently is a work requirement. Id badge has to be on your chest either via clip or lanyard. Even clipping to belt is unacceptable.

Namestheyareachangin · 30/04/2019 15:49

@Alsohuman "please look after this mid-level administrator" 😂 actually I could do with that label most days...
