AIBU to not get why everyone seems to hate lanyards?

Sort of re the pockets thread - I keep my work pass round my neck on a lanyard I was given with the pass for the purpose. This means I always have it so can get through the building easily, never lose it, don't have to carry it in a bag (or pocket!) etc.

I am however in a minority. Everyone else at work including my dh seems to go to great lengths to hide them - putting them in wallets, keeping them in bags, leavim them on desks etc. On the odd occasion I've caught someone wearing one, they've turned the card round in the little bracket do you can't see the photo. I mean your face is right there at the top of your neck, what do you think you are hiding??

Why do folk hate on the lanyard??

I always forget I’ve got mine on. I finished work ages ago and it’s still round my neck. No one hides them in our place everyone wears them! My photo looks like a rat though

MitziK · 30/04/2019 20:02

They make my neck hurt. Horrible things.

I attach it to my belt loops if I'm fortunate enough to actually find a pair of women's work type trousers with the things, but most of the time I can't, so I changed the lanyard to something wider, smoother and safer than the cheap ones they provided, attached it to my massive bundle of keys (I feel like a Poundshop Jailer at work) and walk around with them in my hand.

Apparently, we would have failed our Ofsted if I'd been seen without it round my neck. Strange we failed it anyway.

TheDarkPassenger · 30/04/2019 20:04

I literally never have any of the issues that people on here seem to have with them though! Maybe it’s exactly the right length for me! I don’t have boobies though so it’s doesnt flap along with anything just sorta stays in one place all day

herbafresca · 30/04/2019 20:06

Im the same as u op, around my neck is easiest!

Id lose it if i tried to be cool

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 30/04/2019 20:08

We have to wear them and there are different colours for different types of permanent employee or contractor etc. security will pull you up on it if you don’t have it on. you can’t make tea, go for a pee, photocopy without one and my worst fear is getting stuck in the stairwell or lift area without one. I don’t wear mine outside work because people hate the company I work for and staff have been targeted before.

Goldenhedgehogs · 30/04/2019 20:10

A few years ago I worked for a local authority in children's services and they were shit scared about being Ofsted inspected as it wasn't great last time...anyway management had been doing all these briefings for staff so we say the right thing to inspectors. Included in the briefings were the directors proudly telling staff that the Ofsted inspectors will be given red lanyards so basically to suck arse to anyone wearing a red lanyard. I bought a 10 pack of red lanyards from Amazon and gave them out to my mates and myself. Best £7 I ever spent for a few days then someone senior had a serious word with me.

bumblingbovine49 · 30/04/2019 20:11

Op. I agree. It is the only way I am certain to have my card with me when I need it.

Otherwise it gets left on my bag at my desk or on my desk or in a drawer erc...as I never have a pocket.

I them tend to endn up locked out of my office or having to return from the print room to get it as we need staff cards to pick up printing as well as everything else

geekone · 30/04/2019 20:12

My lanyard is a Wonder Woman one misses point of thread entirely

lazylinguist · 30/04/2019 20:13

Grin at the idea of lanyards being a status symbol! I don't mind mine in the slightest. I have quite a few as I work in various schools. One of them is a private boarding school - they give you a little gold pin with their crest on it, rather than a lanyard. It doesn't tell anyone who you actually are though, which seems a bit silly, but they are pretty lax on security tbh.

trinity0097 · 30/04/2019 20:15

I had to wear one with keys on at my last school as exams officer, they ruined my dresses, as the friction made them bobbly.

They increase the risk of injury if you are in a car accident and wearing one. Our latest company H&S newsletter contained info warning us not to wear them when driving due to this. We don’t have them in my current school, but it’s enough to put me off!

Chocolate35 · 30/04/2019 20:22

I like mine 😂 It’s not uncomfortable and my picture is pretty good (shallow I know but I usually look awful in these pics). I’d definitely loose it and wouldn’t be able to get in any buildings.

BlackPrism · 30/04/2019 20:24

It rubs the eczema on my neck and catches on my keyboard

SayNoToCarrots · 30/04/2019 20:25

I'm surprised people see them as a marker of someone in a fancy job. When I first got mine I felt I looked like a shop assistant in jdsports. I can't imagine someone in a really fancy job wearing what amounts to a cattle tag

nevernotstruggling · 30/04/2019 20:27

Also appreciating 'your face is right there on top of your neck'!!!! Gold.

We are given the anti strangulation ones that snap open but I wear one the kids got me made out of disco beads!!! Social worker

Whisky2014 · 30/04/2019 20:29

They are weighty. I dont want to feel like a dog. The writing on them is so small youu cant easily see the persons name. All in all, totally pointless.

nevernotstruggling · 30/04/2019 20:29

I can't help but read them and make judgements mentally. 'Crikey.. never have had you pegged for a 'Maud'. And you really don't look like you work at an equine vet's.... Hope you've washed your hands well before you started poking about in the pre-packaged pasta salads...'

Gold!!!!! I must start reading other people's!!!

10000thusername · 30/04/2019 20:35

I work in the NHS and I've noticed this too! I love wearing mine!

Trinpy · 30/04/2019 20:37

In defense of people who wear lanyards going round the supermarket, sometimes if I'm at work and I need to run out for some lunch or some urgent shopping I keep mine on because I'm only gone for a few minutes and it seems silly taking it off and carrying it around the shop with me when I could just leave it round my neck. That's acceptable isn't it?

I used to leave my lanyard hidden away in a desk drawer somewhere most of the time but they've gone big on security now and I need it use my id card 4 times just to get to my desk in the morning, so I never take it off when I'm working.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 30/04/2019 20:38

This is definitely the case where I work. I am 100% pro lanyard, but I am in a really tiny minority.

I genuinely don't understand how the majority manage without one. I would lose my card on a weekly basis and get locked out of the building or in random secured corridors daily if I wasn't physically attached to it.

The photo is awful. I absolutely don't care.

whycantIthinkofadecentusername · 30/04/2019 20:40

We insist that outside of the building they are removed immediately. Not only is it a risk that staff can be easily identified and therefore threatened, but if they do something that doesn't look too positive whilst wearing it, it reflects on the organisation.

Inside the building they are on and on display at all times.

PinkOboe · 30/04/2019 20:40

here you go don’t wear them in the car folks

Lozz22 · 30/04/2019 20:47

Mine gets shoved in the top pocket of my works tunic. Easy to get to as and when it's required although I have once forgotten it was in there and washed it rendering it useless cos it fell apart. It's also in my pocket coz I hate my photo on it plus it gets in the way when I'm with my service users. Oh and it sometimes irritates my damaged neck if I wear it round me

LakieLady · 30/04/2019 20:47

I must tell DP about not wearing his in the car. He works for the police, and he reckons that if he ever gets stopped by the plods for some minor traffic transgression, a lanyard round his neck saying "XXXX Police" might mean he gets let off. Grin

itbemay1 · 30/04/2019 20:48

I don't mind them in work but it really annoys me when I see people wearing them outside of work.

There was a police officer at my DCs school that used to keep hers on at assemblies/plays etc... I don't know why it annoys me so much!

moonrises · 30/04/2019 20:49

Mine stays on, I'd forget to take it with me and I do need to use it as id.

I wish I didn't have it on in the car though, stops me being able to 'tell' other drivers how awful they are. Blush Grin
