AIBU to not get why everyone seems to hate lanyards?

Sort of re the pockets thread - I keep my work pass round my neck on a lanyard I was given with the pass for the purpose. This means I always have it so can get through the building easily, never lose it, don't have to carry it in a bag (or pocket!) etc.

I am however in a minority. Everyone else at work including my dh seems to go to great lengths to hide them - putting them in wallets, keeping them in bags, leavim them on desks etc. On the odd occasion I've caught someone wearing one, they've turned the card round in the little bracket do you can't see the photo. I mean your face is right there at the top of your neck, what do you think you are hiding??

Why do folk hate on the lanyard??

Ours are also printed on both sides so if they flip while you walk they are still visible.

OneInAMillionYou · 30/04/2019 15:50

I hate the round the neck ones and refused to wear one. I clipped mine to the bottom edge of my jacket so it was always to hand if I was challenged.
It's like being branded.

I would divorce the man who wore his out on social occasions at the weekend. Ridiculous embarrassing behaviour.

@WallisFrizz I'm sorry and Flowers but I lol'd

Funny, when I left Uni, years ago (when we were still in the EU Grin) I thought it was uber-cool to have an ID badge swinging off your belt. Kinda made me feel I had "arrived".

How times change ...

Still18atheart · 30/04/2019 15:53

I have a physical / active role in a school. And mine just got in the way and on some occasions was pretty dangerous. So know I have a key ring which clips on to my belt it holds my keys and I’d tag

museumum · 30/04/2019 15:53

I’ve quite big boobs so it bounces around like crazy when I walk and clatters on the desk when I sit down. So irritating.

Nevth · 30/04/2019 15:54

I hate wearing mine. I don't mind the actual ID card/photo, but because I have fairly large boobs in comparison to the rest of my upper body, it keeps swinging around and drawing attention to my boobs. It just doesn't lie flat against my body. It makes me feel uncomfortable.

But at least most people in my office either just have theirs in their pockets with the lanyards sticking out, or in their hands when they need it.

iolaus · 30/04/2019 15:55

I'm a midwife and mine is always round my neck about 90% of the time (I do take it off when suturing and occasionally for a birth) - all my colleagues also wear theirs on a lanyard

I suspect it's because you can't get into the unit without your badge (or the staff loo)

Mitzimaybe · 30/04/2019 15:56

I got hives from a necklace once which took months to subside. (The silver plating wore off and I must have been allergic to the base metal but didn't twig that's what was making my neck sore for ages.) Ever since then I've been unable to wear necklaces - previously my most-worn item of jewellery. The lanyard makes my neck start to feel itchy and prickly. It may be psychosomatic now but I just can't bear the feeling of something round my neck.

InsertFunnyUsername · 30/04/2019 15:57

Im still laughing at the DH that wears his at the weekend.

Like gollum out of lord of the rings with his precious 😂

Mine never bothered me office guys used to cut coke with it

greenelephantscarf · 30/04/2019 15:58

yanbu
I don't mind
we have colour coded ones and are required to wear them visibly at all times.

JanartaMeen · 30/04/2019 16:00

'I look like the man from Up in mine' has really tickled me.

This thread is so unexpectedly amusing. Grin

Alsohuman · 30/04/2019 16:00

So many of them seem unnecessary. My husband used to have to wear one in a small office where everyone knew everyone else, no member of the public ever went and you had to drive through a barrier guarded by a man with a gun to get in there. Why?

Damntheman · 30/04/2019 16:02

This thread is amazing! Here everyone gets an ID card/access card which you are obligated to either wear around your neck or attached to your belt loop where the photo and your name and the company logo are visibly. It's a security measure, you need the card to get through most doors and anyone without a card is immediately tagged as a potential intruder to security.

ShirleyPhallus · 30/04/2019 16:03

They remind me of absolute teacher’s pets, the keenest of the keen people. The sort of people who wear lanyards volunteer for charity committees and recycling committees and social committees and are ALWAYS the first to complete employee surveys or voluntary training.

LakieLady · 30/04/2019 16:03

I won't have one.

They bloody bounce about on my (admittedly ample) tits, cause people to gaze in the region of said tits, which makes me feel very self-conscious, catch on door and drawer handles, are a risk if a client decides to grab it (a colleague got some quite significant abrasions on the back of her neck when a client grabbed her lanyard, they're supposed to come undone but plainly require a hell of a yank), I don't want all and sundry knowing my name and, worst of all, it has a fucking hideous picture on it which is so awful that even DP said he wouldn't have recognised me from it.

I have a magnetic name badge with just my name and the organisation's logo on, which I wear if I'm meeting clients in the community.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 30/04/2019 16:04

I don't mind wearing mine. Its got my.smart card and swipe card to get around the hospital in it, it's also a requirement of our uniform so people have to wear them.

They’re a strangulation hazard if grabbed by a violent patient.

You have the wrong ones if this is a hazard. Mine has 4 break points in it, you'd struggle to strangle a twig with the small pieces it breaks into.

LakieLady · 30/04/2019 16:04

Oh, and it's a horrid colour that clashes with almost anything!

clairemcnam · 30/04/2019 16:04

I only need mine to use the photocopier and if I am trying to get into the office early before the receptionist is there.

KnitterOfSocks · 30/04/2019 16:04

We are required to wear them at all times and you will he challenged if you don't have it on. Also unable to go to the loo, use the lifts, or print anything. They aren't politicised though, pale green with the logo on. But they are very firm that we all must wear them and staff should challenge people who aren't. Our sites generally have some public access so the staff areas are very closely watched.

SweatyUnderboob · 30/04/2019 16:06

If they’re a light colour, they always look grubby round the part that touches your neck.

Hiddenaspie1973 · 30/04/2019 16:07

I wear it around my neck, but turn it so my details are hidden when I'm popping out.
I work for LA and am not dealing with folk who may bear a grudge against my LA.
I often tuck it under my top too.
All those who don't wear them at my work end up losing or forgetting them and can't access the building.

RosamundDarnley · 30/04/2019 16:08

I had to wear one in my job so I swapped it with one I bought on holiday. After a week I was asked to not wear it again as it advised customers to "Drink Guinness" Wink

Blackandpurple · 30/04/2019 16:12

I hate them. Luckily i don’t wear one now but my old work day place it was compulsory and it was access to my office.

I don’t get it why people wear them round tesco on their way from wirk. Its like the want to show off “look at me and where i work! Yoo hoo!” Well sod off an leave it in the car you prick😁

2Brieornot2Brie · 30/04/2019 16:12

I work in a security restricted place so we have to wear them at all times. It bounces around and I don’t like it but no choice.
