essexgirl12 · 25/04/2019 13:50

me and my friend were chatting about babies.

friend: "i have heard that the birth weight of your baby is to do with the birth weight of the baby's father. my boyfriend was 10lbs when he was born so i hope i don't have a 10lb baby like that!"

me: "it depends on lots of things i don't think it is just that - my brother was 11lbs when he was born!"

friend: "oh i would hate that - i don't want a big chunky baby - i kind of hope my baby is premature and small and cute and diddy"

.........?? stunned to silence really

She said premature?

BendydickCuminsnatch · 25/04/2019 13:53

Ignorant!

BigRedLondonBus · 25/04/2019 13:54

THis is normal
Imo. all my friends wished for a small baby (not premature but not over 7lbs)

CupOhTea · 25/04/2019 13:54

She said premature?

This^^

Hairwizard · 25/04/2019 13:54

She needs to be careful what she wishes for. Silly bint.

cardibach · 25/04/2019 13:55

She is ridiculous, YANBU. I get that giving birth is frightening and large babies sound like they’d be much more difficult to deliver (and DD was 9lb7, so I’ve been there) but higher birth weight is safer for the baby. Certainly prematurity isn’t a risk she should want to take.
Also how big does she think 11lbs is? It’s still pretty And you either think babies are cute or you don’t. A couple of pounds extra surely won’t make the difference!

rabbitheadlights · 25/04/2019 13:55

Ignorant dickhead!

Electrocute1980 · 25/04/2019 13:55

As a mum of two premature babies, I think your friend needs to give her head a wobble. What a stupid thing to say.

Angry
99calmbeforethestorm · 25/04/2019 13:55

She is being silly but I suspect what she really means is a 37 week baby who is not huge rather than an actual premature baby.

cardibach · 25/04/2019 13:55

That should say ‘it’s still pretty diddy’. Not just pretty!

Easterbunnyhashoppedoff · 25/04/2019 13:56

I know at least 3 who said they were glad they still smoked as they would def have a small baby, thus easy labour. All women over 30....
Friendships drifted off. Odd bloody lot!!

elliejjtiny · 25/04/2019 13:56

That's horrendous. My baby was born at 35 weeks and 6 years later he still has long term complications and I still have nightmares about it. I can't imagine what it would be like to have an earlier baby with life threatening problems. Who on earth would wish for that? Mind you I got a lot of comments about how lucky I was that ds was early so maybe some people really are that clueless.

RChick · 25/04/2019 13:56

Is she actually pregnant? If not, i bet her attitude changes pretty soon afterwards.

Worlds0kayestmum · 25/04/2019 13:57

I have a premature baby. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. She's being ridiculous

HalyardHitch · 25/04/2019 13:57

What a bizarre thing to wish for. My boys were 6lb6 and 6lb2. It kind of made them weaker. The smallest had jaundice but he really struggled to get rid of it and the threshold for hospitalisation was so low. The bigger one was poorly and in hospital.

That said, they were pretty diddy and cute

SallyWD · 25/04/2019 13:58

How silly! But maybe she didn't mean it. People just talk rubbish sometimes. I wished for a big baby because I heard they slept better (that's probably a load of rubbish too).

Biolama · 25/04/2019 13:58

I think she probably doesn’t mean premature, when pregnant with my first i remember half thinking i hope he comes a bit early so he’s smaller because I thought that would make labour easier. I was thinking maybe 37/38 weeks as i heard they put on most of their weight after 37 weeks. I don’t know if that is true and towards the end I didn’t care about the bigger weight I just wanted him to be safe. She probably thinks 37 weeks is premature

Offallycheap · 25/04/2019 13:59

My mother said I should only marry a man with a pointy head and narrow shoulders. I was 11lb. Just sayin.

essexgirl12 · 25/04/2019 14:00

wow - cant't believe this isn't a unique wish with others wishing for small babies too! she is not pregnant no but wished for "a little prem baby". ridiculous thing to say

Yousicktwistedfruit · 25/04/2019 14:01

Your friend is a dickhead a small baby is harder to deliver than a big baby and who the hell wishes for a premature baby that’s horrible

rosy71 · 25/04/2019 14:01

Did she really say premature or just early? Ds2 was born at 38 weeks and was 9 lb 6oz so being slightly early is no guarantee of a small baby.

essexgirl12 · 25/04/2019 14:01

@Easterbunnyhashoppedoff unbelievable!

Drogosnextwife · 25/04/2019 14:02

Well my DP was 4lbs when he was born and my DS was 10lb so I don't think that's true 😂

Happyspud · 25/04/2019 14:02

It was just a throwaway comment. I think everyone knows what she was getting at as someone facing a birth for the first time. Relax OP. Of course she doesn’t want an ill baby in an incubator.
