me and my friend were chatting about babies.

friend: "i have heard that the birth weight of your baby is to do with the birth weight of the baby's father. my boyfriend was 10lbs when he was born so i hope i don't have a 10lb baby like that!"

me: "it depends on lots of things i don't think it is just that - my brother was 11lbs when he was born!"

friend: "oh i would hate that - i don't want a big chunky baby - i kind of hope my baby is premature and small and cute and diddy"

.........?? stunned to silence really

Does she think having a smaller baby would hurt less? I have had 6 kids age range 28 down to 6 yrs. baby 1 was 5lbs and an emergency c s the others ranged in sizes from 6lbs 11ozs up to 9 lbs 2 ozs. The pain was just as bad on all of the natural births what is important is a healthy baby and mum at the end that's what everyone wants

Is the birth weight of the father indicative of the birth weight of his baby ?
I definitely heard a specialist on the radio, many years ago, say that the mothers birth weight is an indication of baby's weight.
So which is it please?

I remember being a speechless when a friend told me that the reason she continued to smoke during pregnancy was because she wanted a small baby! What do you say to that?

Contraceptionismyfriend · 25/04/2019 18:20

@Littlechocola oMG. What a bitch.

I'd be thinking that her child deserves a better mother and that she's managed to fail at parenting before starting. Which is a strange accomplishment in itself.

Cannyhandleit · 25/04/2019 18:23

Yes a ridiculous thing to say but I very much doubt she wants a perm baby! When I was pregnant with my first I truly hoped he'd be like me 5.6lb and not like his dad 10.5lb and I definitely said that out loud to lots of people!

It's not the weight you need to worry about. It's their head circumference.

Not in the case of shoulder dystocia. And once you've had it once any subsequent large baby is more likely to have it. So it's understandable to want a smaller baby. With DC3 I started having daily sweeps at 38weeks to try to encourage an earlier, smaller baby and less risky birth. Sadly it wasn't to be and I ended up with a reluctant section at 40+3

Not sure about mothers birth weight but I was 6lb 4oz and 4 weeks early. My mum also smoked throughout the pregnancy as it was the 70s and the dr told her told her the stress of giving up would be worse than the smoking. But she cut down to 'only 5-10 a day anyway' Hmm

Your friend is crazy I’ve got 5 children their weights ranged from 7lb 1 to 9lb 2.
My 9lb 2 baby was my easiest birth but unfortunately he broke his clavicle in delivery and ended up in Nicu
He was born at 37 weeks +1.
Dd was born at 38 weeks and weighed 7lb 1 it was my worst birth by far.
Back to back and every time they gave me an internal she wriggled away back up and it was my longest labour which ended up with a pph.
A week later she was admitted to hospital with severe jaundice under the lights for a week and 3 points under needing blood transfusions.
Smaller is not always better.
