Just that really... the last two episodes have been so slow!

OP posts:

Well it was certainly very tense. Amazing the first battle scene where they rush off with their lit swords and then they are just gone in moments.

Got a bit unbelievable that people could really survive that though, when the undead were just pouring over the top.

Great ending! The white walkers gone!

Now what?!

GreytExpectations · 29/04/2019 23:10

It was by far the best Game of Thrones episode ever! So happy Arya was the one to kill the NK. I disagree about not being enough main character deaths as that wouldnt have worked for the rest of the series. I think people forget this wasnt the final battle and they basically lost 2 armys so yeah it was still pretty damm bad!
To people annoyed that NK died "too early", the main plot was always the Iron Throne so it makes sense to focus the ending on that. So a lot more to come in the last 3 episodes.

GreytExpectations · 29/04/2019 23:12

Now what?!

The fight for The Iron throne, which was always the main plot line.

rosenylund · 29/04/2019 23:14

I was levitating off the settee watching the latest episode. Back to the old days of waiting to see what happens next.

LaurieMarlow · 29/04/2019 23:15

The fight for The Iron throne, which was always the main plot line.

Not if you read the fucking books it wasn’t. Facepalm.

It’s clear I expected too much from D&D.

RogueV · 29/04/2019 23:17

I thought it was fantastic

llangennith · 29/04/2019 23:21

I thought it was great! This series is different from previous but I prefer the style. Loved tonight's ep.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 29/04/2019 23:27

Sorry i see this online a lot, whats D&D?

LaurieMarlow · 29/04/2019 23:37

David and Dan, the show’s producers

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 29/04/2019 23:46

I can’t imagine this many people had heard of the books before they got televised. What happened in the books then?

LaurieMarlow · 29/04/2019 23:53

Well the books had their own fan base and were doing v well before the show, but yes, the show catapulted the whole thing to new levels of fame.

Tonnes of things in the books didn’t make it to the show and the storylines totally diverge around season 6. The books are infinitely richer and more interesting.

Sadly GRR Martin doesn’t seem able to finish them and D&D’s effort seems set to disappoint (me at least).

Initially I was happy they were at least creating an ending, but now I fear it’ll totally ignore all thats genuinely great about the story.

Sofagirl · 29/04/2019 23:54

That was bloody brilliant best episode ever

GreytExpectations · 30/04/2019 06:19

Obviously the TV has made some changes to the books, which is what im talking about. facepalm. Did you really have to be so rude?

YouTheCat · 30/04/2019 07:27

I want to see the Hound and Arya tackle the Mountain.

LaurieMarlow · 30/04/2019 08:17

the TV has made some changes to the books, which is what im talking about

Well that’s the understatement of the year.

Until last nights episode I thought that D&D ‘got’ the overall point of the books, while being a bit hamfisted with some of the delivery.

But if that’s the night king gone so we can concentrate on a show down with Cersei then they obviously haven’t.

To have someone pipe up cheerfully that the iron throne is the ‘main plotline’ just underlines how such promising material has been reduced to the tropes it was once so good at subverting. Sigh.

Anyway, mumsnet isn’t really the place for good discussion on this, I’m off to the Westeros forums.

Yes, i think itd be much better you take your annoyance elsewhere as you are being unnecessarily rude on here. I was just joining in on a casual chat about the show.

LannieDuck · 30/04/2019 08:52

I found it disappointing. Much too 'hollywood' - all the main characters battling hordes of undead single handed and surviving impossible odds, or dying (although only 1 or 2) in heroic moments captured in slo-mo.

Not what GoT was about. When the main character of season 1 was killed off, it wasn't even the series finale! That's GoT. In a big battle, it doesn't matter how much backstory you have, some of the named characters should have been killed on a back-swing, or by a stray arrow.

But I'm also someone who read the books years ago, so maybe I have different expectations.

downcasteyes · 30/04/2019 08:53

I refuse to watch GoT. Adults watching a show where people wave swords around at dragons = embarassing.

I am so with you on this. D&D have been slowly driving it off a cliff since their source material dried up.

But as evidenced on here, plenty of people are just in it for the big battle scenes, goody vs baddy showdowns and are happy enough so 🤷‍♀️

Beachbodynowayready · 30/04/2019 09:00

Jon Snow lives....
Nuff said...

GreytExpectations · 30/04/2019 09:06

Ok this went from a nice thread about the GoT episode to people being bitchy, just because not everyone has read the books and god forbid we like the show. Im out.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 30/04/2019 09:10

This thread has it all. Superiority for knowing more about the plot lines than the silly folk that only watch the tv show and not read the books and now the smug comments of people who think fantasy genre is beneath them because they are a proper adult.
Why can’t people just enjoy things and let other enjoy them too??

TrixieFatell · 30/04/2019 09:11

Nothing like a bit of GoT snobbery 😂

I think that they always do the opposite to what you think will happen. We were expecting deaths so they gave us very few

LannieDuck · 30/04/2019 09:16

True.

I'm sorry my last sentence read like one-up-man-ship. Not intended. I only mentioned it because the other person posting here who also didn't much like the episode had also read the books first. It was an interesting observation shrugs

(If it makes a difference, I only got to book 3. They became much too long and tedious after that.)

LaurieMarlow · 30/04/2019 09:21

Well personally I had a lot invested in it.

For those who’ve been reading the books for a long time, it’s become increasingly obvious that this is the only ending we’re going to get. So fans had a lot resting on D&D to do justice to the promise of the story, which it looks like they won’t, hence the frustration.

Of course, what’s really going on is frustration with George himself for not being able to finish it. I wouldn’t give a flying fuck about what D&D do if I knew that i was getting 3 more books from George (which is what it would take). And yes I know I don’t own George either, but it’s frustrating.

So very different audiences looking for very different things from the show. I guess disappointments were inevitable.
