To ask WTH happened to me?

LeukaeLucky · 22/04/2019 09:56

Hi mumsnetters
The weirdest thing happened to me last night and I'm hoping to get some reassurance or guidance on what it could be.
So I'm about to go to bed but realise I have forgotten to take the clothes from the washing machine out.
I'm getting to the kitchen and my legs start feeling really heavy like I'm about to faint. I decide to not take any risk and lie down on the kitchen floor. My whole body feels heavy. I call my oldest daughter (14) to help me stand. I try to get up but I literally feel like I'm weighing 200 tonnes
Even talking feels difficult
She encourages me to sit but my left side feels even heavier than the rest of my body so every time I manage to sit I fall down on my left side. I end up soiling myself and somehow manage to stand and shower. I then go to the toilet and bang my head on the sink my entire body weight seems to be going toward my left
I ended up managing to go to bed with the help of my oldest child but I'm freaking out. What was that? Why couldn't I lift my body up? Shall I see a gp tomorrow?

To be honest I'm surprised given the symptoms described the op didn't have bloods taken , possibly a referral for a CT and carotid dopplers, ECG
this could have been anything and given the history of cancer a "fit" type episode could be as serious a symptom as metastatic disease in the brain
OP I don't think "stress" quite covers it

Stiffasaboard · 22/04/2019 16:25

OP posters are derailing the thread with nonsense about the kids
Your eldest didn’t call because she was being led by you as you were conscious and telling her was fine (was we do so as not to scare them).

BUT I’m a doctor- you should have had a CT head scan IMHO as a start and maybe more.
The symptoms you describe are concerning and shouldn’t be attributed to stress until everything else has been ruled out.

Please please see your GP and ask for further investigation.

If you have ANY worsening of symptoms or new symptoms, however minor they may seem then go straight back to A&E.

Rezie · 22/04/2019 16:31

I'm sorry but stress?! Did they o anyhting else except measure reflexes and blood pressure? Please go see another doctor asap. They should take blood tests, scans, ultrasound, check arteries.

LeukaeLucky · 22/04/2019 16:38

Thank you for all the advice. I will definitely ask to be checked up and if my gp ignores my concerns I'll speak to my macmillan consultant. No blood taken, no scans nothing but the blood pressure on arrival and the reflexes checked. I was kind of hoping the "stress" could be the answer but this is clearly not it. Some of the testimonials are quite scary but useful.
Thanks again

And no follow up appointment given. Was just advised to come back if I was to experience another episode or to go to my gp. That's it

@Stiffasaboard She has been seen by the wonderful NHS and told that it was stress. Who are we to overrule doctors? While you might be a doctor, most of us are not. Her children need to know what to do in an emergency as I strongly suspect they will need to call 999 in the not too distant future.

There's not much you can do when A&E dismiss you. You can't demand further tests, you actually are paralysed metaphorically.
This is why you have a merry go round in and out of A&E.

They seem to only look at stats, obs and a description of what happened. If all that seems normal, you're summarily dismissed!

For once and all - there is a report post button for the troll hunters.

And no you don't have to just sit passively by if you think you are unwell but a&e miss something.

You go to your gp and ask for a second opinion .

steff13 · 22/04/2019 16:54

When someone has symptoms of a stroke, standard protocol should be a CT scan. Without that they couldn't have eliminated the possibility of a tumor, a blood clot, swelling, etc.

OP, let me tell you about my father. He had a stroke. My mother called 911, but he was better by the time the EMTs got there. They took him to the hospital, and did a CT scan to see if there had been damage to his brain. They found 6 tumors. He had no previous cancer diagnosis. He died 30 days later.

You need to get your doctor to refer you for more tests.

I've learned that people in genral have terrible first aid skills. I'm a scout leader so I know basics pretty well and make sure we annually review the skills with scout kids. Also i try to make sure my certificate is upto date. Some time ago there was a situation where people were all looking at a guy on the ground. Someone had called 999 but nobody was doing anyhting. 999 gives good instructions but clearly the words they said meant nothing to anyone. So yeah, I did the basics like checked airways, positions and then eventually CPR. It's scary AF but people dont seem to have any theoretical knowledge. When I was getting a driver's license the provided a free first aid class and only people who showed up were the ones who already knew basics.

I really think in school health class they should teach this every year and then every work place should have annual first aid day (maybe Feb 11). The skills are something you need to practise.

LeukaeLucky · 22/04/2019 17:40

@Horsemad nope first time I experience this (and post about it) so not me on the other post. I'm so sorry @steff13 for what happened to your dad. I had a MRI about a month ago for a non related issue so hoping if it was cancer, that it would have been picked up then.
Still hoping for it to not be too serious...

Stopyourhavering64 · 22/04/2019 17:52

A history of cancer should raise alarm bells about possibility of a stroke and patients with cancer have a heightened risk of blood clots both during and following treatment
Please tell your consultant about these symptoms

Passthecherrycoke · 22/04/2019 18:19

Tbh this is probably quite frustrating for OP and I bet she wishes she’d never posted. She’s been aggressively berated for not calling 999, not going to hospital sooner, not teacher her daughter to call for help.

Now she’s done what she’s told, and HCPs who have examined her are unconcerned. Only to come back, update, and be berated again that that’s not good enough and she needs to go somewhere else instead. In all likelihood, her GP is going to dismiss it as nothing also- then what are you going to order her to try?

I think people find it hard to accept that often things that sound serious in writing aren’t. Not everything is worst case scenario. We don’t know better than those who examined her

AsleepAllDay · 22/04/2019 18:27

A stroke can happen at any age. 999

hellenbackagen · 22/04/2019 18:33

oassthecherrycoke

Her symptoms were worrying and a&e is as good as the nurse/doctor/hcp you see.

My fil died 2 days after being kicked out of a&e. They missed something massive!! Saying she should just accept their rudimentary exam with no proper investigation is a worry for
Someone with her history and no one should just accept what they are
Told if they feel there could be more to it than "stress "!

I certainly haven't been a poster who berated her . But I am anxious that this lady go back to her gp for follow up because I don't believe they have done a proper exam in a&e.

People die from this sort of ignorant attitude that we all just accept our lot . Doctors and nurses in a&e are not infallible. They are busy overland stretches and sometimes get it wrong and dismiss people's symptoms without proper investigation.

My poor fil could attest to that if he were alive .

I don't know what area you live in OP but everywhere in the UK should now have a rapid access TIA clinic like in the link .

LeukaeLucky · 22/04/2019 19:09

Thanks @Fretfulparent I've looked. There's one local to where I live but I would still need a gp referral.
@hellenbackagen sorry for your fil. I've heard of so many horror stories of misdiagnosis so I'd rather be safe than sorry.
@Passthecherrycoke you're right, it's really frustrating but mostly because I don't feel like I've been looked at seriously so I'm not exactly at peace with the response I got. I will try to pursue it with my Gp but mostly because it was terrifying and I'd like to not have to experience this again.

Try to relax today if you can OP. You are going to see your doc tomorrow for reassurance so for tonight you should just try to take it easy and be as calm as it is possible to be in the circumstances.

Try not to let people get to you who have been sniping. It is possible your post triggered something in them that they had repressed/don't want to consider etc and it is those feelings manifested in their posts. Other are just, well.......

Most of us just want to make sure you are ok.

Ilovemysleepthief · 22/04/2019 19:39

Sounds like you were fobbed off, I would be tempted to go back and ask for bloods etc to be done

Moonbea · 22/04/2019 19:53

@LeukaeLucky
Icidentally my younger 2 born in this country never mentioned 999 but they will happily talk about Emily Pankhurst and the 1666 great fire of London ( around the time I was probably born according to DS)

the great fire of London was the year 1666 that was around 352 years ago and Emily Pankhurst was born in 1858 (160 years ago) and died in 1928 (90 years ago).
Don't think your kids understand how long ago that was.

Hope your feeling better anyways. Must have been so scary!

LeukaeLucky · 22/04/2019 19:59

@Moonbea that's how old I am according to my son 😂. I feel OK thanks just really nervous it might happen again.
@PotterHead1985 thanks a lot. Working on it
@Ilovemysleepthief I'm definitely trying to get a second opinion fast to put my mind at rest. Thanks

@LeukaeLucky
😂 That's brilliant! Got to love kids and the stuff the think 😂

I would be scared of it happening again too. Fingers crossed for you it doesn't though xx
