To ask WTH happened to me?

LeukaeLucky · 22/04/2019 09:56

Hi mumsnetters
The weirdest thing happened to me last night and I'm hoping to get some reassurance or guidance on what it could be.
So I'm about to go to bed but realise I have forgotten to take the clothes from the washing machine out.
I'm getting to the kitchen and my legs start feeling really heavy like I'm about to faint. I decide to not take any risk and lie down on the kitchen floor. My whole body feels heavy. I call my oldest daughter (14) to help me stand. I try to get up but I literally feel like I'm weighing 200 tonnes
Even talking feels difficult
She encourages me to sit but my left side feels even heavier than the rest of my body so every time I manage to sit I fall down on my left side. I end up soiling myself and somehow manage to stand and shower. I then go to the toilet and bang my head on the sink my entire body weight seems to be going toward my left
I ended up managing to go to bed with the help of my oldest child but I'm freaking out. What was that? Why couldn't I lift my body up? Shall I see a gp tomorrow?
TiA

Glad you're ok OP. I don't think you or your DD are idiots but I do think it's sad that someone loses control of their body and then soils themself and doesn't think they are in need of some medical attention.

minisoksmakehardwork · 23/04/2019 09:35

@cheeseypizza, well mine watch Netflix on the app in my tablet so....

Everyone has been told how to report trolls or do we need an idiots guide for this as well?

@LeukaeLucky - I do hope you get a gp appointment soon. I too have experience (with children) of being dismissed from a&e only to be admitted with them following gp appt.

As you've acknowledged, going over emergency skills with your dc is a great idea. All mine are in the scouting movement and all have done their first aid badges. I don't know that the little ones especially would be confident in an emergency but it is reassuring to know that if push came to shove, they do have the basics. Even if it's only to be able to phone emergency services and give information.

Some of the ambulance trust websites have very child friendly activities to help teach these skills and might be worth printing some off and working through them. Also make sure you keep emergency information - house address, phone numbers next to the phone and have a copy of personal information in an easily accessible place, eg names and ages of everyone who lives in the house, what meds they are on. Important medical history such as your cancer and treatment with approximate dates - treated for X cancer in 1996, all clear given 2001 or whatever for example.

idwc · 23/04/2019 09:45

Stroke symptoms... The faster you get medical treatment the better the prognosis.

LeukaeLucky · 23/04/2019 09:49

@minisoksmakehardwork great idea. I was thinking of the scoots for the little ones. And mines too, watch on the app on the family laptop.

I can only say in my defence that when you went through chemo radiotherapy and transplant you get a lot of side effects and if I were to ask for medical attention every single time I would literally be in hospital every week. I've lost my vision temporarily while at hospital, fainted a couple of times, became deaf in one ear and so on. I know some people are incredulous but this is my reality so I tend to dismiss any non urgent things and really didn't think of a stroke due to my age.
I have a gp appointment this afternoon and will push for a referral to the TIA clinic

Scouts sorry

AbsentmindedWoman · 23/04/2019 09:53

Hope you are feeling better, OP! It sounds really scary.

I think it'd be a good idea to push for this to be checked out, just in case.

stucknoue · 23/04/2019 10:06

My kids school did cpr training at age 12, if your 14 year old hasn't it's worth booking her onto a one day course it included rescue services etc

MarinaPunta · 23/04/2019 20:00

Op, it’s really rare that I get a headache, but when I do, I know about it! On this occasion, I did not have a headache either. Look up hemiplegic migraine and you will see the symptoms are very similar.

My Local NHS has a very good track record with strokes and ALWAYS refer you to the TIA clinic as a precaution. I am shocked your hospital did not do that.

LeukaeLucky · 24/04/2019 07:19

@MarinaPunta thanks, had never heard of those.
My gp dismissed the possibility of a TIA / stroke because it was both sides. She mentioned that it could be related to the bowel movement as a PP had suggested with her IBS.
I'm seeing my cancer doctor on Thursday will try again then
Thanks for the comments

If anyone is still here I've been at hospital for the past 2 days after having another episode.
Doctors are quite confused but suspect virus in the brain or spine so I've had a very long MRI and a lumbar puncture.
Waiting for the results

Oh goodness OP I'm so sorry. I hope they figure out how to help you very soonThanks

DCat · 26/04/2019 18:05

I think you mentioned you had shingles... Maybe it's connected? Having my fingers crossed for you Flowers

Oysterbabe · 26/04/2019 18:08

I hope you get to the bottom of it OP. Flowers

EBearhug · 26/04/2019 18:09

Get well soon, and I hope you get a diagnosis! Good luck!

LeukaeLucky · 26/04/2019 18:24

@DCat I have read that encephalitis can be caused by the chicken pox / shingles virus so could be this.
They should be able to see this from the fluids they took off my spine

hellenbackagen · 26/04/2019 18:24

Best of luck and hope you get to bottom of it 💐

ScrewyMcScrewup · 26/04/2019 18:29

Thinking of you, OP.

I'm sorry people have been such twats to you and your daughter. You've really shown them up by being so gracious in response.

I was a very intelligent 14-year-old and I think I would have listened to my mum if she'd insisted I didn't call her an ambulance. Children have it drummed into them to listen to adults, especially their parents.

winepls · 26/04/2019 18:31

This sounds awful OP. Hope you get some answers soon & get well quickly!

AyoadesChinDimple · 26/04/2019 18:31

Try and drink lots of caffeine and stay lying down after the lumbar puncture to avoid the headache you can get afterwards. Sorry you are having such a run of bad health. Hope you get answers soon.

RumbleMum · 26/04/2019 18:38

Thinking of you, OP. You and your DD must be so worried.

Have a look too at hemiplegic migraines - they are weird and I ended up in A&E with them a few weeks ago and was referred to the stroke clinic before a neurologist diagnosed me with Hemiplegic Migraine (I had no headache). I haven't seen it listed as a symptom but I had to stagger to the loo each time for an urgent bowel movement. It's just a thought.

Hoping you get some answers soon Thanks

RumbleMum · 26/04/2019 18:40

Sorry, should've RTFT - I see this has been suggested.

SansasSnatch · 26/04/2019 18:48

Blimey I hope things are ok op 💐

Summersunsareglowing · 26/04/2019 18:49

Sorry to hear that OP but you are now in the best place possible. Don't let them send you home again until you know exactly what is wrong and you are being treated.

I hope you will be well again soon and home with your children.

LeukaeLucky · 26/04/2019 19:00

@ScrewyMcScrewup thanks a lot. @AyoadesChinDimple that headache is a b#%£&. I've been drinking coke for the past 2 hours to no avail.
@Summersunsareglowing I don't think they will discharge me until they find something. I'm meant to have a full neurological assessment tomorrow so we'll see.
It does look like it @RumbleMum but hasn't been mentioned by the docs as a possibility. They've mentioned toxoplasmosis or virus in the brain /spine. The nurse thought it could be a lack or too much potassium but my results came back clear. It's all a mystery
@hellenbackagen @SansasSnatch @winepls @EBearhug @oysterbabe thanks a lot. Can't wait to figure out what is happening and get back to my normal life
