To ask WTH happened to me?

LeukaeLucky · 22/04/2019 09:56

Hi mumsnetters
The weirdest thing happened to me last night and I'm hoping to get some reassurance or guidance on what it could be.
So I'm about to go to bed but realise I have forgotten to take the clothes from the washing machine out.
I'm getting to the kitchen and my legs start feeling really heavy like I'm about to faint. I decide to not take any risk and lie down on the kitchen floor. My whole body feels heavy. I call my oldest daughter (14) to help me stand. I try to get up but I literally feel like I'm weighing 200 tonnes
Even talking feels difficult
She encourages me to sit but my left side feels even heavier than the rest of my body so every time I manage to sit I fall down on my left side. I end up soiling myself and somehow manage to stand and shower. I then go to the toilet and bang my head on the sink my entire body weight seems to be going toward my left
I ended up managing to go to bed with the help of my oldest child but I'm freaking out. What was that? Why couldn't I lift my body up? Shall I see a gp tomorrow?

OP i’m 46, I had a stroke 18 months ago , I didn’t go to hospital for 6 hours even though I was going through similar to what you describe. When my husband got home he hauled me in to a&e I got a right bollocking. Next day I saw stroke specialists and got a provisional diagnosis ( never do I ever want to be in a stroke ward again). You need to go back and ask questions- I thought I was ok, but when I saw what the consultant saw I understood what they meant, later leading to a stroke diagnosis rather than TIA.I later found out I had a previously undiscovered hole in the heart. Go back and ask more questions!!

Justaboy · 22/04/2019 20:52

and Emily Pankhurst was born in 1858 (160 years ago) and died in 1928 (90 years ago).

Was she related to Emmeline Pankhurst at all;?..

LeukaeLucky · 22/04/2019 21:15

@laloue I hope it's neither a stroke nor a TIA but will ask for further diagnosis. I hope you are well now. I doubt I'll have anything major in my heart because I had regular scans while going through chemo less than a year ago (heart, lungs, CT scans...) so if there's something it would be fairly recent.
@Justaboy I believe it's the same person (suffragette/ pyromane?)

For suspected stroke cases, ring 999 for an ambulance. It will fast track you in. DO NOT WALK INTO A&E. My friend is a nurse on a stroke ward and gives everyone this advice.

I know someone who had a stroke, called 999 and had to wait hours for the ambulance. I can only assume there were a lot of other genuine emergencies that day, but it is worrying.

BallsOfFluff · 22/04/2019 21:53

People saying that the FOURTEEN year old saw her mum in a bad way and panicked, which is why she didn't call 999 - surely it should be the opposite?

See mum on floor, can't move or sit up, drooping to one side and then soiling herself. Panic most definitely but pick up the phone straight away.

My mum was an alcoholic and I had to call her an ambulance many times from around 8 years old when she was either unconscious, had taken an overdose or was fitting. I was terrified, but still knew to call 999.

LeukaeLucky · 22/04/2019 22:09

@mirime I had a similar experience with my then 3yo daughter. She was having an asthma attack and the dispatcher didn't want me to drive her to A&E (10 min away) insisted on an ambulance which never turned up. An hour later still nothing I called back and made my way to the hospital. I don't know why it happens but unfortunately with the NHS being super stretched as it is, it's likely to see this reoccurring more and more frequently.

incogneto · 22/04/2019 22:15

@LeukaeLucky Sorry I haven't RTFT but did you get seen to? I really hope you're okay!

LeukaeLucky · 22/04/2019 22:22

@incogneto yes I've been seen but the possibility of a stroke / TIA was dismissed because I showed good nerve response. He said it's most likely stress related
I'm planning on seeking a second opinion from my gp because it felt rushed and I don't feel like I've been checked thoroughly (for instance I bumped my head and he didn't even look at it). I'm feeling OK now but very nervous to experience this again thanks for asking.

LeukaeLucky · 22/04/2019 22:30

@BallsOfFluff she didn't just panic, I also insisted I just needed to go to bed and said it was nothing.
I too had to call an ambulance for my mum when I was quite little and I remember crying on the phone and the call handler hanging up on me thinking it was a prank maybe. It's not easy. I wouldn't blame her. I probably should have called myself or told her to call.

Bettyspants · 22/04/2019 22:35

@mirime , doesn't make a difference if you are a walk in or 999, unless in an awful A&E! Pre-alerts to clear a bed and get the stroke team there is very handy but if any symptoms are mentioned at booking in a patient will go through. If this isn't happening it needs to be followed up. Yes there can still be a wait for ambulance if a higher response category comes up.

Bettyspants · 22/04/2019 22:36

@mirime sorry that wasn't intended as a response to you!

hellenbackagen · 22/04/2019 22:37

Good for
You balls. Competitive 999 calling -' it could catch on. Yeah you did great. Well done. Gold star and all that.

Unfortunately not all kids are the same and since we get about a zillion adults on this site a day asking if they should call 999 or 111 or something else I can quite understand how a 14 year old might struggle to step in take full responsibility and go over her mothers head .

This is now really starting to grate- op how you are maintaining a cheery disposition when people are quite happy to ignore the fact you had a serious medical episode in order to slate your poor dd is beyond me . You are clearly a nicer person than I am because I'd be telling folk to
Get to the far side of fuck by now.

Hats off to you. 💐

BallsOfFluff · 22/04/2019 22:41

I understand that you told her that you was fine, but when she saw you in that state she should've known that you really wasn't.

DD really needs to be taught how to evaluate situations and take her own initiative. It's a life skill and a very important one at that. I'm amazed she didn't learn that during DofE
Google has plenty of resources regarding the emergency services and what to do - please tell her to research it. Plus services like 101 and 111.
It could literally be the difference between life and death.

hellenbackagen · 22/04/2019 22:49

balls
It's sad
You had to learn to ring 999 but your situation was very different. This was a one off out of the blue where you clearly had this routinely from 8 which is horrific but why are people so quick to slate a child for this? 14 is a child. It's not fair to expect her to have taken over and ignored what her
Mum was saying and dial 999.

greenpop21 · 22/04/2019 23:02

Hope all is ok. As for PP continually beating you up about your DD not knowing about or calling 999, I am appalled! As if you aren't dealing with enough after this major scare and children to look after.

Flowers

Here they are!

incogneto · 22/04/2019 23:13

@LeukaeLucky thank god it wasn't a stroke/TIA. At least you're getting a second opinion; better to be safe than sorry.

Hope all goes well at the GP.xx

MarinaPunta · 22/04/2019 23:22

I posted earlier about the possibility of migraine. However, I had CT scan, Doppler scan, heart rate etc the day it happened. The next day, I had to go back to hospital for more tests. I had high dose Aspirin for a couple of weeks afterwards. I wasn’t allowed to drive for (I think) a month.

I do have history of migraine and my dad died from cancer a couple of weeks before so I was also very stressed - also wasn’t pleasant for mum to see what looked like a stroke in her living room! I had the full on FAST symptoms - the arm numbness is more than just tingling, heaviness - my arm was literally so dead, I couldn’t pick it up with my other hand. A couple of days later, I had tingling in my legs and some numbness. I was taken straight back to hospital in an ambulance

Phone your GP first thing in the morning and they may be able to send you back to hospital by contacting them first so they expect you - ambulatory so not waiting around. Any further symptoms, ring 999 immediately.

I have a care plan at work, so even though they say the likelihood of it was hemiplegic migraine, I still need to take care.

When things have settled down - one of the community groups near me was running free emergency first aid courses recently, so it might be worth checking whether anything like that is available near you. Red Cross or St John Ambulance are likely to know what's available locally, if you find the local contacts (website.)

I hope everything is okay and you get good results at the GP.

Flaverings · 23/04/2019 03:02

So your children don’t know about 999 because you don’t have a telly and they don’t watch tv and so don’t have that kind of general awareness? Yet they know all about 911 from the cartoons and Netflix that they watch?

Flaverings · 23/04/2019 03:02

A stroke is absolutely a possiblity at 33. Time is of the essence. Call an ambulance now unless you've got someone next door to drive you to A and E. You can't hang around.

Confused
LeukaeLucky · 23/04/2019 07:12

Yes my children are idiots and I'm an even bigger idiots. I lived in a non English country and even I knew about 999 thanks to Mary J Blige and wyclef (Google it, Great song)
Anyway now that this is settled can we move on? It's quite tiresome

@EBearhug thanks for the tip, I do have a first aid certificate but it's 15 yo and I wouldn't feel confident helping someone.

@MarinaPunta I didn't have a headache when it happened but lately I have been suffering from very short-lived intense headache which I attributed to my lack of sleep.
I will raise it with the gp if I manage to get an appointment thanks

Thanks @greenpop21 and @hellenbackagen for being reassuring and positive.
