This weekend it occurred to me that I say primark in a weird way!

Do you say it Primark (i as in eye)
Or Primark (i as in eee)

The comparisons to words such as primary (pry-), princess (prih-), primadonna (pree-) etc just goes to show how utterly bonkers the English language is.

Penneys - ROI

Mousetolioness · 22/04/2019 17:06

Wild stab in the dark but could
regional variations in the advertising be down to regional pronunciation? So, pree-mark in Wales to align it with, for example, Pontypridd.

warriorprincessandwidowed · 22/04/2019 17:09

Will always be penny's

Reddedder · 22/04/2019 17:15

I’m Scottish and say say Pry-mark. It’s sounds odd the pree way

DisaL · 22/04/2019 17:20

Pr'eye'mark for me. Although I'm currently doing some work with them and my contacts there are the most unpleasant set of people I have ever worked with. So as soon as I'm not working with them anymore I won't be saying the word ever again and I'll definitely never put a single penny through their tills again!

cardibach · 22/04/2019 17:22

I live in Wales and most where I am say Pr-Eye-Mark and Pree-mark. As a PP said, I think the confusion here may be that I in Welsh has an eee sound. I think we should probably go by what they say on their website now, not some random pronunciations and a regional advert from 30years ago...

francienolan · 22/04/2019 19:59

Pricemark, a French friend used to call it that and it stuck for me!

19lottie82 · 22/04/2019 20:00

I’m in Scotland and everyone I know says Pree Mark

Ohyesiam · 22/04/2019 20:02

Preyemark, because Preemarni doesn’t mean anything Wink

IJustLostTheGame · 22/04/2019 20:09

Its Sergio Primarni in our house.

youlladdressmeassir · 22/04/2019 22:48

Seems to be down to personal preference as much as regional and national variations

Despite the assertions that "in scotland" we say pree-Mark, I've only ever heard it called pr eye Mark. So it depends who you know
