This weekend it occurred to me that I say primark in a weird way!

Do you say it Primark (i as in eye)
Or Primark (i as in eee)

thefairyfellersmasterstroke · 22/04/2019 12:37

"Gieves & Hawkes"

Even this one is fraught with difficulty! I always assumed the first part was pronounced 'Jeeves' but apparently it's not - it's a hard 'g', like 'gear'.

I've never known anyone who shops at Primark and talks about it, so I've never heard it said aloud. Could it be a similar scenario to Lidl, who couldn't presuade the UK natives to pronounce it 'Leedil' and eventually gave in and called it 'Liddle" themselves?

Also know someone who used to say "Lye-dill".

MaiaRindell · 22/04/2019 12:40

In Scotland, it's always Preemark

Citrina · 22/04/2019 12:42

You wouldn't say pree-mary school (primary school) so why Pree-mark?
I think it's Pry-mark

Feilin · 22/04/2019 12:46
its pree mark
