This weekend it occurred to me that I say primark in a weird way!

Do you say it Primark (i as in eye)
Or Primark (i as in eee)

OP posts:
werideatdawn · 22/04/2019 08:55

Pry marni

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 22/04/2019 08:59

Pree-mark, West Scotland. No one says Pry-mark here.

HerRoyalFattyness · 22/04/2019 08:59

Pry-mark

Also for the PP who asked

I(eye)ke(key)a
Ni(eye)sa (the ads say its a nicer way to shop)

englishdictionary · 22/04/2019 09:00

It's not regional variance. Prymark is wrong. I don't care what they say now. We have proof.

Surely the proof is their own website that states Prymark is correct Confused

MissClareRemembers · 22/04/2019 09:01

My Scottish family say Preemark. I say Preyemark. We both maintained we were correct. I asked them how they pronounce Primary School...

I’m right. They’re wrong. 😂🤣

LuluBellaBlue · 22/04/2019 09:03

Primarni Wink

lubeybooby · 22/04/2019 09:05

They said themselves once that it is Pry (as in sty, lie, die) mark

ketchupormayo · 22/04/2019 09:06

Preee Mark. From South Wales. Just moves to bristol everyone says Pri Mark

HalfBloodPrincess · 22/04/2019 09:12

I’m a Londoner living in Wales, I say Pry-Mark, DP says Pre-mark, and dd (15) calls it Prim-ark to wind us both up.

isabellerossignol · 22/04/2019 09:12

They said themselves once that it is Pry (as in sty, lie, die) mark

And they also used to call it Pree-mark themselves. So it might be Pry-mark now but it wasn't always.

duebaby2 · 22/04/2019 09:15

It’s probably a depends where your from type of thing. I know people from near me that say a different pronunciation of ‘oo’ words (cook/cookies/book/pool) , they replace the oo’s with a ‘uw’ or ‘ew’. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I say pri (eye) mark.

Alarae · 22/04/2019 09:19

Preye-mar-nee

Grin
ReadWriteDraw · 22/04/2019 09:20

I think Preemark is Scottish thing (Scot living in London here) but I’m all English now and say Pri(eye)mark.

I do however say the same Scottish oo sound for everything - apparently there is a long oo and short oo sound. Most confusing!!!

Fudgecakes · 22/04/2019 09:21

I had a Saturday job in Pri/remark 30 +yrs ago. Back then it was deffo pronounced Preemark as I remember the Xmas jingle that was played in store usingbthe Preemark version if the name. It was a lovely little ditty which was the worst ear worm ever - probably why I still remember it years later! It went:-
Preemark got a whole lot of shirts for you guy
And a whole lot of socks and ties
Fa la la la la la la
Fa la la la la la la
Fa la la la la la la
Socks and ties and nice surprises
Preemark.......

As you can see, it drove us mad!!

TwinsTrollsandHunz · 22/04/2019 09:24

PrEYEmark

Same as the ‘pri’ in ‘Primary’.

Fudgecakes · 22/04/2019 09:24

By the way I'm in the SW

TheSconeOfStone · 22/04/2019 09:34

I spent a couple of years in NI in the 80s as a child and it was definitely Preemark on the TV ads. Was very confused they started opening over here and changed to Pri'eye'mark. I have finally caved and no longer call it Preemark.

Heratnumber7 · 22/04/2019 09:35

Preemark. But I'm Welsh, living in England and old habits die hard

MumUnderTheMoon · 22/04/2019 09:51

In NI it's generally pronounced pree-mark but I think that Primark sold a t-shirt that had "Pri (as in eye) mark" written on it.

KawaiiKitt · 22/04/2019 10:42

Primark, the "i" making an "eye" sound.

ForalltheSaints · 22/04/2019 10:43

As rarely as possible.

safariboot · 22/04/2019 10:45

Pry-mark. Like Prime. Birmingham here.

Pree-mark sounds like you're trying to pronounce it as a foreign word, which is very Hyacinth Bucketey.

Lyricallie · 22/04/2019 10:47

Pree mark here and in central belt of Scotland. Although I accept other people call it preyemark.

EleanorOalike · 22/04/2019 10:52

I’m in the North - Everyone here says Pr-eye-Mark or “Pr-eye-marni”, even the many Scots folk who live here. My East Coast Scots and ROI family say Pr-Eye-Mark too (or Penneys Grin). The only person I ever met who said Preemark was from NI and he hated the way we all said it.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 22/04/2019 10:55

Penny’s.
