Going on holiday tomorrow but poorly kids!!!

Hi everyone

We are due to go on holiday to Turkey tomorrow but two out of my three kids have fallen Ill today. They both have sore throats and temperatures and have not eaten or drank much today. One of them has just complained that he feels sick.

We have been looking forward to this holiday for six months but I really don't want to take them in this state. Our flights are at 2pm tomorrow and I really don't know what to do. I need to think of a plan b just incase we have to end up cancelling.

Our flights are booked with easyjet and we do have travel insurance, what could my options be if I do cancel? I have only paid for one nights hotel stay and the rest would be paid on arrival.

Will my insurance company pay out? I feel like they both have some kind of virus but the last thing I want to do is take them abroad and be stuck in a hotel room.

For a sore throat and temperature I'd still go tbh.

I wouldn't take them, they will feel rotten and you will make other people ill as well.

I wouldn't go to Turkey at the moment if you paid me anyway

If you cancel it's likely your insurer would want proof of you being unable to travel. The proof would likely have to come from your GP and it would depend on the level of cover you took out, so there's no definite yes or no answer.

Flowers I hope they're well and happy to fly tomorrow, but if not phone everyone you need to and let them recover. Holidays with unwell children are absolutely miserable.

Going on the plane is going to make their throats worse as its recycled dry air and give everyone else on the plane what they have so ruining a whole plane load of people who like you might have saved for months. Your children if feeling ill arent going to enjoy it. Cancel and rebook. Yabu.

I would cancel and rebook. They won’t enjoy it and you could potentially make a lot of other people seriously unwell (I have an autoimmune condition and if I caught a virus on the plane I would be seriously unwell).

This situation is my worst nightmare. I really don't know what to do.

Would an insurance company accept the reason for a payout? Or would my kids have to be physically sick to be deemed unfit to travel?

Does anyone know what easyjets policy on this would be?

You need to contact your insurer, they are the only ones who can tell you what they need for you to make a claim.

They were really looking forward to it and went to bed in tears tonight. I feel so awful about the whole thing.

Insurance company would want evidence from a gp (letter, possibly any test results needed). They might look into medical history depending on the value of the claim, which is why you have to declare any pre existing medical history when you take out the policy (prescriptions etc).

Imagine the flights are non refundable? The travel insurance would need to reimburse you for those.

Fingers crossed they wake up feeling fine.
Ring your insurer now though and see what evidence you would need to make a claim just in case.

Personally I’d see how they are in the morning before phoning the travel insurer.

Yes I'm praying for a miracle. We are all packed and ready to go but I really can't risk taking them if it's going to make them feel worse or put others at danger.

Is easyjet the insurer? Have you called your insurance company? Has your Dr said they are unfit to travel? Do you have that in writing

In my experience you will need a doctors note saying the children were not well enough to fly for the insurance company

For a sore throat etc I’d still be taking them. Once they are there I’m sure they will be ok with a few doses of calpol.

They will be better in a couple of days time and your be thinking about how you could be in the sun right now and instead your at home trying to get some money back from your insurance company

With sore throats and temperature I would just go to be honest. I don't know much about travel insurance but I'm not sure you would be reimbursed on that basis? I would just give calpol and hope for the best.

Pretty sure you would need advice from gp not to travel ... ring the company and ask ... they are usually there 24 hours x x

My insurance is through another company but my flights are with easyjet.

They have not seen a doctor yet as they only fell ill this evening.

What's easyjets policy if i rebooted for another date in future.

What about consideration for others, @Order654 ? Another poster has already pointed out that the air recycling system on the plane will mean other passengers being especially vulnerable to viruses etc.

Knowingly exposing other people to an illness is pretty low imo. You don't know who is immuno-compromised or recovering from chemo etc.

for insurance you would need to take them to see a gp but its a pretty straightforward process and the doc will just need to fill in a form and say not recommend trip.

insurance should cover the flight costs and anything else (excluding excess)

We had to cancel when DS1 was vomiting blood and was admitted to hospital years ago. They thought it was a stomach bug at the time so the doctors did us a letter saying he wasn't fit to fly otherwise the insurance company wouldn't have paid out.

Hi OP

I cancelled a holiday once due to illness. I had to have a letter from the GP (had to pay). Mine was a fatigue based illness and I was meant to be going on an activity holiday so was more clear cut.

What time is your flight? I would go to the doctors first thing and see what they say. If it's just a cold type virus I would probably go -yes they wont feel great for a few days but they should improve in a few days and you can dose them up with paracetamol and fluids for the flight and it wont do them any harm.

If it's something more serious I'd get a letter. The insurance should pay out as a doctors letter would be adequate evidence.

Ds2 and DH have both had this virus.

It’s quite unpleasant and knocked them both out for over a week each.
