Hi everyone

We are due to go on holiday to Turkey tomorrow but two out of my three kids have fallen Ill today. They both have sore throats and temperatures and have not eaten or drank much today. One of them has just complained that he feels sick.

We have been looking forward to this holiday for six months but I really don't want to take them in this state. Our flights are at 2pm tomorrow and I really don't know what to do. I need to think of a plan b just incase we have to end up cancelling.

Our flights are booked with easyjet and we do have travel insurance, what could my options be if I do cancel? I have only paid for one nights hotel stay and the rest would be paid on arrival.

Will my insurance company pay out? I feel like they both have some kind of virus but the last thing I want to do is take them abroad and be stuck in a hotel room.

@jacksonmaine - putting the children first - we seem to be in the minority Sad

MrsEricBana · 17/04/2019 23:47

Don't flame me but it doesn't sound like you want to go and are trying to get out of the trip, either because of nerves or cost. Sorry if that's not the case. If it is this there's nothing you can do other than cancel and absorb any non-refundable costs. If it is just the illness thing, you need to decide in the morning whether they are fit enough to go. If they're not fit you cancel all, ask GP for a letter to this effect (this will cost £30-50 and insurer won't refund) then claim back as much as possible via the insurer.
Hope you sort it out and your DC are better soon.

MrsEricBana · 17/04/2019 23:49

I only say this because I was a very nervous traveller and would have done anything to get out of a particular trip (which ended up being great once I got over myself)

OP, my DC was so poorly once before going on holidays. Once there the temperature was gone. Another time he had tonsillitis and temperature for 3-4 days. Calpol helped a bit.

Princess1066 · 17/04/2019 23:54

@Persimmonn - wow - just how is putting the care of your children before yourself ridiculous?

jacksonmaine · 17/04/2019 23:56

Not at all. Children really shouldn't just be dosed up and then hope, fingers crossed, they will be OK. HmmThey should be treated with a bit more respect. Luckily the Op seems to have her head screwed on and will assess situation in the morning.

I'm immunosuppressant after having a transplant and would hate to be stuck on a plane for 4 hours with sick people.

It's just not fair 😕

ChopinIn10Minuets · 18/04/2019 00:00

One year I was chucking up like mad the night before we went on holiday. We still went. Thing was, though, I knew it was because I'd unwittingly eaten something I am extremely intolerant to (it may actually be an allergy, but the food is quite easy to avoid). I was fine in the morning apart from being very tired, and at least on holiday I could rest.

Princess1066 · 18/04/2019 00:01

@AppleDump sorry to hear that Flowers

Longdistance · 18/04/2019 00:01

Calpol and Nurofen, suck bags on the flight. Get on that plane, Don’t let it ruin your holiday. They’ll be fine in two days.
I used to fly with sore throats and colds, I lived.

Canshopwillshop · 18/04/2019 00:01

@princess1066 - I feel sorry for your kids if you would cancel their much anticipated holiday because they had the start of a common cold which will more than likely get better within the first coupe of days of a lovely warm holiday. It’s no wonder we are raising a snowflake generation with attitudes like yours!

LuckyMarmiteLover · 18/04/2019 00:03

The headmaster at my DC school has insisted that they go to school with these symptoms. On that basis I would definitely take them on holiday.
If I was immunosuppressed there is no way I would get on a flight. So many diseases have a longer incubation period that would make flying far too risky.
Go!

jacksonmaine · 18/04/2019 00:04

I am totally astonished by this thread. I real eye opener for sure. Off to bed.

Ceebs85 · 18/04/2019 00:05

Thanks Dr Hermione

alphajuliet123 · 18/04/2019 00:06

Of course you should go on the family holiday abroad that you've looked forward to for six months. If they start throwing up, don't go. Otherwise - Calpol, layered clothing, and lots of ice cream when you get there.

Princess1066 · 18/04/2019 00:07

@Canshopwillshop - and I feel sorry for yours if you would drag them away from home if it wasn't just a common cold - oh and f off with your boring snowflake comments why don't you - yawn

likeridingabike · 18/04/2019 00:07

Otherwise fit and healthy children, with colds, will be absolutely fine on holiday, it's ridiculous to suggest that people with a simple cold shouldn't travel.

Itssosunny · 18/04/2019 00:08

You can't always have ice cream with sore throat. If it's a viral infection then yes but not if it's a bacterial. That will make things worse.

Canshopwillshop · 18/04/2019 00:10

@appledump - sorry to hear that but I think it’s quite common knowledge that flying is a huge germ spreader. All those people in the airport and on the plane . What If you get sick whilst away - are you not supposed to get on the plane to come back home?

englishdictionary · 18/04/2019 00:11

The headmaster at my DC school has insisted that they go to school with these symptoms. On that basis I would definitely take them on holiday.

Yeah, because that's the same Hmm

Canshopwillshop · 18/04/2019 00:13

@princess1066 😂😂😂

Asvan · 18/04/2019 00:14

Going to work or school is a completely different thing to going away on holiday when you are ill. With the first two, you are still in the country and you still get to sleep in your own bed at the end of the day. It simply can't be compared.

Princess1066 · 18/04/2019 00:16

Well i'm leaving you all you hard nosed folks to it - I look after children like yours every day who are plonked into day care when they should be at home - but just you keep telling yourself it's OK - I take the temperatures - give the Calpol - wipe the noses - rub the sore tummies - change the dodgy nappies & give the comforting hugs instead - all the while feeling glad that when my son needed all this I was there for him

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/04/2019 00:19

Yes it is a different thing. When you are on holiday and unwell, you can lie in the warmth, you don't have any timetable to stick to, you have access to an endless supply of lovely food and cold drinks. Work or school, not so much....
