Hi everyone

We are due to go on holiday to Turkey tomorrow but two out of my three kids have fallen Ill today. They both have sore throats and temperatures and have not eaten or drank much today. One of them has just complained that he feels sick.

We have been looking forward to this holiday for six months but I really don't want to take them in this state. Our flights are at 2pm tomorrow and I really don't know what to do. I need to think of a plan b just incase we have to end up cancelling.

Our flights are booked with easyjet and we do have travel insurance, what could my options be if I do cancel? I have only paid for one nights hotel stay and the rest would be paid on arrival.

Will my insurance company pay out? I feel like they both have some kind of virus but the last thing I want to do is take them abroad and be stuck in a hotel room.

OP posts:

Fuck me, I'm on holiday and one of my DC has just developed a cold. She in bed next to me now coughing.

Should I immediately pack up and rush her home lest she be in unfamiliar bed and noisy environments? What if I'm abusive by staying???

Or, should I give her appropriate medication, change our daily activities to be a little more restful and leave on Friday as planned?

This thread is mental.

englishdictionary · 17/04/2019 23:29

OP said they both have sore throats and temperatures. One of them is feeling sick.

SecretWitch · 17/04/2019 23:31

I do hope they feel better in the morning, Op.

I would not take my sick children away on holiday. They are more comfortable in their own beds, surrounded by their own things. I want to care for them without worrying about getting them off and on a plane and dragging them to a hotel.

You know your children best. Base your judgement on their response.

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/04/2019 23:31

Jesus Christ. Do you all keep DC off school when they have a cold, do you all stay off work with a cold?

OP is taking her DC on nice holiday to a nice resort with access to medical facilities in a developed country, she's not thinking about taking them back packing over the andes with a broken leg.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 17/04/2019 23:31

i am so amazed that so many people would casually cancel a holiday and lose a shed load of money because their kid has a cold!
give them some calpol and go fgs!

gnushoes · 17/04/2019 23:31

Dose them up, pack the calpol and nurofen and off you go. It's a cold. They will be fine.

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/04/2019 23:32

And these will be the same people complaining about snowflake generation.

Princess1066 · 17/04/2019 23:33

How high are their temperatures - how sore are their throats - are their glands swollen - you mentioned coughing too? Surely they are the deciding factors in whether you go - not will the insurance pay out? Hmm

BluntAndToThePoint · 17/04/2019 23:34

The Easyjet policy for cancelling due to illness/bereavement is that you contact their Customer Service Team as soon as possible. You will be able to access customer services through their website - you should have login details to manage your booking online. Their online chat facility is only available from 8am to 8pm. Their flights are non-refundable (which is why they are so cheap).

Persimmonn · 17/04/2019 23:34

Take the kids and go. Calpol them up. Give them some vitamin C supplements and I bet they’ll be ok by the time you get there. The excitement usually perks kids up.

Noonooyou · 17/04/2019 23:34

alexaambid are you serious? The children have a cold, they aren't throwing their guts up! A child with a cold would more than likely go to school, and do other tasks. Nurses and doctors still work with colds and they are around weak people all the time. Life doesn't stop for a cold!

jackson that is the funniest thing I've heard. Honestly. Having done many safeguarding courses etc.. I can assure you, taking a child with the sniffles on an aeroplane is not borderline abusive.

jacksonmaine · 17/04/2019 23:34

TBH i wouldn't go to Turkey even if I was feeling fit as a fiddle.

Hope your DC are feeling better soon OP.

AgileLass · 17/04/2019 23:35

This thread is mad Grin

pinkcardi · 17/04/2019 23:35

OP, just to add, as I wasn't really being empathetic before, that I hope they wake up feeling better and that you have a wonderful time.

jacksonmaine · 17/04/2019 23:35

Spot on.

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/04/2019 23:37

All these people saying they wouldn't take their DC to Turkey, have any of you been? Just wondering if it's about what you imagine it's like, whether you have specific issues with Turkey, or whether you are asing that on an actual visit to Turkey?

ThelmaDinkley · 17/04/2019 23:38

Hope they are feeling better in the morning and you have a good holiday.

jacksonmaine · 17/04/2019 23:38

We don't know whether it is the sniffles and hopefully you will never be involved in safeguarding my DC.

Canshopwillshop · 17/04/2019 23:38

Can’t believe some of the comments. Unless they wake up very much worse, It’s probably just a cold. I really think you would be over-reacting to cancel your holiday and don’t think you’d be covered with insurance if it is just a cold.

jacksonmaine · 17/04/2019 23:39

Yup been to Turkey.

Bunnylady53 · 17/04/2019 23:40

2nd time today I’ve seen “ lozenges” spelt as “ lozengers” - just saying. This is a tricky one. I think I’d be tempted to cancel if you can OP. Hope it all works out for the best 🙂

tigwig76 · 17/04/2019 23:40

I would be giving calpol and nurofen at the recommended doses and gauge how they are in the morning. Obviously if they deteriorate in the night or are vomiting then it's a no. But if only a bit under the weather I would certainly go. Just take plenty of meds with you. You can buy more after security in the airport. I hope they are well enough. It would take alot for me to cancel a holiday and a sore throat and mild temp would not make me do so. Fingers crossed for you.

likeridingabike · 17/04/2019 23:41

Your GP practice will be open at 8am, however, this doesn't constitute a medical emergency, children get colds, you'd usually be expected to see a pharmacist not a GP for self care advice. I wouldn't bank on seeing a GP tomorrow and getting a letter/form completed before you're due to fly, it will more than likely take several days to be dictated and then typed and posted/collected and there will be a charge for each letter/form as it's not NHS work it's a private insurance matter. People will be along in a minute to say that they weren't charged, they were lucky, times are hard in Primary Care and they're much hotter on these things than they used to be.

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/04/2019 23:45

I've found pharmacy staff in Turkey to be nothing less than helpful and efficient. DH had antibiotics prescribed for an infected toe, they helped with decongestant etc for DS2 when he developed a cold during another holiday and with travel medication for DS1 when he got travel sick on a trip and was nervous about being ill on the way home.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 17/04/2019 23:46

We don't know whether it is the sniffles and hopefully you will never be involved in safeguarding my DC.

Oh ffs. Quick someone call social services, there is a woman thinking that she might take a child on holiday even though they have coughed.
