Hi everyone

We are due to go on holiday to Turkey tomorrow but two out of my three kids have fallen Ill today. They both have sore throats and temperatures and have not eaten or drank much today. One of them has just complained that he feels sick.

We have been looking forward to this holiday for six months but I really don't want to take them in this state. Our flights are at 2pm tomorrow and I really don't know what to do. I need to think of a plan b just incase we have to end up cancelling.

Our flights are booked with easyjet and we do have travel insurance, what could my options be if I do cancel? I have only paid for one nights hotel stay and the rest would be paid on arrival.

Will my insurance company pay out? I feel like they both have some kind of virus but the last thing I want to do is take them abroad and be stuck in a hotel room.

People really cancel a holiday because a child has a cold? Or a cough?

Jeezo.

Order654 · 17/04/2019 23:03

@Greensleeves - no chance id miss a holiday and disappoint my kids over a cold, sore throat. I don’t care how low you think that makes me or all the other posters saying they would do the same thing.

iamH · 17/04/2019 23:03

Get to a chemist pack plenty of medicine and get yourselves on holiday

Amy326 · 17/04/2019 23:06

As long as neither of them vomit overnight I would still go. Calpol and distractions! They’ll probably be fine in a couple of days. I recommend buying one of those ‘first defence’ nasal sprays for yourself in the morning to try stop you getting it, I find they really do work. As someone else has said there really is never going to be a flight where none of the passengers have some kind of virus or illness, plenty of things get passed around before people even know they have them! You’d never go into public areas if you were that paranoid about catching a cold.

Ceebs85 · 17/04/2019 23:07

I had tonsillitis in Turkey. I'd rather be feeling ill but lazing around on a sun lounger taking the odd dip in the pool than sat at home feeling like crap.

ginswinger · 17/04/2019 23:08

I took my DD away last week with a slight temperature and a sore throat. After a couple of days in the hotel with her tablet and cuddles, she was fine. Take medicine and something to soothe a sore nose plus enough tissues to mop them up and go.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 17/04/2019 23:08

Call your insurance company now to get an idea of how easy it would be to cancel and what you would need to do.
That way you can make an informed decision in the morning.

blue25 · 17/04/2019 23:11

No way would I take sick kids on a plane or to Turkey. You do not want them to be in need of medical care/hospital admission over there. It's just not worth it.

Also very unfair on the other people on the plane sat around you.

AlexaAmbidextra · 17/04/2019 23:11

Lovely to see the number of people who don’t give a fuck about anyone else isn’t it?

Chickychoccyegg · 17/04/2019 23:13

some calpol and lozengers and they'll most likely be fine, if they really feel rubbish in the morning, could you get an emergency dr appointment to see if they need antibiotics? i wouldn't want to cancel for this and doubt your insurance would pay out unless you had a dr letter saying too ill to travel

englishdictionary · 17/04/2019 23:14

This thread is an eye opener that's for sure.

jacksonmaine · 17/04/2019 23:18

I would not take my DC ill to Turkey. Have you even checked where the nearest hospitals are incase their illness gets worse?

pinkcardi · 17/04/2019 23:18

It's a cold.

Dose them up with Calpol and get on the flight.

Not sure how you'd convince a GP that they weren't fit to fly for a cold. I've had to cancel a holiday before due to illness, GP wasn't going to write a letter without real need and proof. Insurance company asked questions too.

It's a cold. Take them. Take Calpol. Have a good time.

maddy68 · 17/04/2019 23:20

I would go. It's a cold ...you won't get your money back from insurance for that either

SnowsInWater · 17/04/2019 23:20

"If you are immunosuppressed you shouldn't get on a flight".

Nice.

SileneOliveira · 17/04/2019 23:21

So much catastrophising.

OMG what if they need TO GO TO HOSPITAL!!!! Because that's what happens all the time when a healthy child gets the sniffles. Hmm

jacksonmaine · 17/04/2019 23:21

I can't actually believe how many posters think it is OK to take ill children on holiday! It is wrong on so many levels.

It is borderline abusive to take ill children on holiday and it is wrong to potentially pass this illness on to others. Get a grip!

HermioneKipper · 17/04/2019 23:22

@Ceebs85 Ha - don’t think you had tonsillitis if you were able to laze on a sunbed and have a dip in the pool 😂

But OP if it’s just a cold/cough definitely still take them. Dose up for the flight and they’ll be fine when you get there

jacksonmaine · 17/04/2019 23:23

Dose them up with Calpol! Hmm How about keep them in bed in familiar quiet surroundings ffs.

SileneOliveira · 17/04/2019 23:23

Fuck me, I have heard it all now. The child has the common cold. The child has a sore throat and a slight temperature.

They are not lying in hospital, ravaged with Ebola.

Get a grip.

mummymayhem18 · 17/04/2019 23:24

Hope they wake up feeling better ☺️

HermioneKipper · 17/04/2019 23:25

Borderline abusive?! They’d have to go to school with a cold! Doctors definitely don’t advocate keeping kids at home unless they’re really unwell.

If life stopped because people have coughs and colds nothing would ever get done! My DD has had one cold after another since about November!

Asvan · 17/04/2019 23:26

If it is just a cold and they seem better in the morning then yes, we will most likely take them. If they are sick or look too weak to travel then we will cancel.

I don't think it would be fair on them or anyone else to drag them away from the comfort of their home in that state.

Bollocks. No one would send their kids to school feeling like this. It is not a runny nose. Sorry forgot holidays override everything on Mumsnet!
