Hi everyone

We are due to go on holiday to Turkey tomorrow but two out of my three kids have fallen Ill today. They both have sore throats and temperatures and have not eaten or drank much today. One of them has just complained that he feels sick.

We have been looking forward to this holiday for six months but I really don't want to take them in this state. Our flights are at 2pm tomorrow and I really don't know what to do. I need to think of a plan b just incase we have to end up cancelling.

Our flights are booked with easyjet and we do have travel insurance, what could my options be if I do cancel? I have only paid for one nights hotel stay and the rest would be paid on arrival.

Will my insurance company pay out? I feel like they both have some kind of virus but the last thing I want to do is take them abroad and be stuck in a hotel room.

I would just dose them up and go. Chances are they'll be fine by the time you get to the hotel.

NeverSayFreelance · 19/04/2019 22:04

I'm glad you got your holiday, OP! I'm sure the fun will take the kids mind off how they are feeling. Enjoy!

seag · 19/04/2019 22:21

You can change your easyjet flights to a new date/destination up to a few hours before departure for a fee and you are charge any difference in price. This happened to us last year and this is what we did rather than go through insurance

EllenMP · 20/04/2019 15:26

I would probably dose them heavily with chidrens nurofen for the journey and go as planned. The air on planes is filtered before recirculating so I don’t think it’s that big a deal. You could take antiseptic wipes and wipe down the loo after they use it if you are worried about them passing things on to others. I think the things they touch are more likely to affect someone else than the air.

Kids bounce back fast, and I feel like you will regret giving up your holiday in two days time when they are fine again.

But, having said all that, the thing to do is to make them an appointment with the doctor in the morning and ask her/him if they are fit to travel.

Canshopwillshop · 20/04/2019 16:31

@seag and @ellenmp - the OP is on holiday!

@WaxOnFeckOff I've flown to dalaman for dalyan and its not too far either. We go to Dalyan at least once a year (being going for about 20 years) and love it as well as other places in Turkey.

As for pp implying there's some lack of healthcare - due to particularly accident prone family we have accessed local pharmacies numerous times (same system as UK where there is always a 24hr one and also they can prescribe antibiotics direct), local doctors and Marmaris hospital. Could not fault the service/treatment at all and was way ahead of similar in the UK. All spoke English so language barrier was not an issue.

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/04/2019 09:17

I lived Dalyan, probably my favourite place. DH doesn't tolerate the security xrays for some reason, he has a lot of allergies, so unfortunately Turkey is now off our list. Mood I'm in with him today though could mean he's dumped, moody bastard.

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/04/2019 09:18

And agree, had nothing but excellent service from the pharmacies over there.

GlomOfNit · 23/04/2019 11:43

Wow, this thread was so much more batshit crazy than I'd imagined! Grin

Only on MN ... would a significant number of posters pearl-clutch at the prospect of someone knowingly travelling with children who have a cold...

As for the poster who wisely nodded and said 'ah, DH and DC have had that virus, it put them out for a week, it's horrible' - really?? That exact precise virus? Based on the OP's report of an elevated temp and sore throat? Grin MN really cracks me up sometimes.

Personally, I've always found that distraction is the BEST way to help children forget they have a nasty cold. We went to the beach for the day last week. I and both DC had a fucker of a cold. We went anyway. Fresh air and sea and sand and ice cream, and honestly all of us forgot we'd been feeling unwell.

My mu always moans about the inevitability of sitting next to someone with a cold on the plane (she travels to the continent several times a year) but it doesn't seem to stop her getting on the plane. Mild viruses are part of public life. Everyone knows what planes are like. Most of us just get on with it and do it anyway.

BentBaastard · 24/04/2019 14:13

Feck off Glom.....

My dh and ds both had the same symptoms and were sick.

I was just expressing my view of the situation. Neither of them could have flown; dh could barely walk and had to be helped to the loo.

Absolutely no pearl clutching here.

BorisBadunov · 24/04/2019 14:39

@WaxOnFeckOff DH doesn't tolerate the security xrays for some reason, he has a lot of allergies,

I’m genuinely puzzled by that, what do you mean? I’ve never heard of an allergy to X-rays before...

NoSauce · 24/04/2019 14:45

Always annoys me when people say don’t go in situations like this. So easy to say sat in your computer/phone to complete strangers on the internet.

WaxOnFeckOff · 24/04/2019 15:27

You and me both Boris. I'm not adverse to the thought that it's all in his head but it's real to him and he is genuinely unwell. Same even with dental xrays etc.

BorisBadunov · 24/04/2019 15:36

Ah okay. Some kind of psychosomatic reaction then.

I’d be seriously annoyed if this was my DH. And probably march him to get counselling... you are clearly more patient than me!

LovelyIssues · 25/04/2019 10:34

I would do take them for that. Calpol and once that sun hits them I bet they'll perk up

Asvan · 25/04/2019 12:21

We have had a lovely time and we are flying back this evening but guess what? My 7 yr old DC has got an upset tummy. He's been complaining of feeling sick and has been to the toilet several times. I'm beginning to think that he's allergic to holidays!

Duster12 · 25/04/2019 12:29

Oh great. So now you can pass another bug around on the flight home 😃👍

Rainbow1781 · 25/04/2019 13:06

Is he nervous of flying or travel do you think?

Noonooyou · 25/04/2019 14:26

duster oh please. A small virus cough is nothing.

What do you expect the op to do now?!

Asvan · 25/04/2019 14:32

To be honest I just can't wait to get home now. We have a 10 hour journey ahead of us so I really hope he's OK for that. We have taken him on holiday many times before and this is the first time that he's been ill on the way here and the way back. I really wanted to make the most of our last day here but we have all just been stuck in the hotel room looking after him.

OP posts:
CottonSock · 25/04/2019 14:32

Oh no. I'm sure it happens all the time. I've often seen people vomiting in airports. Good luck!

pinkgloves · 25/04/2019 14:38

Some one took their kid with a d&v bug on a flight I was on recently. Kid was in the row next to us and threw up twice.

Dh, ds and I have all now had it and it's knocked us for six.

Flying with a bug like that is bang out of order imo.

Mississippilessly · 25/04/2019 14:38

Duster13 dont be so ridiculous. As stated a bajillion times, people travel with mild illness all the time. Because they have to, because the world doesnt stop, because they dont realise they are I'll etc etc.

OP good luck. We are about to leave our hotel for an hr transfer then a 11.5 hr flight with our 7 month old. I need a stiff drink!

Lizzie48 · 25/04/2019 15:39

I’ve travelled by plane with a cold/sore throat plenty of times. After all, what would you do if you developed a cold whilst on holiday, cancel your flight home?

I’m glad you all went on your holiday, OP, hope you have a great holiday. Smile
