To ask what's your 'go too' takeaway from the chipper?

Following on from the thread where the poster asked if she should get a takeaway from the chipper in a Friday, what's your usual go too takeaway?

Either battered sausage or a quarter pounder with cheese for me, sometimes with a portion of onion rings, except for Supermacs (Irish chipper) when it'll always be a chicken fillet sandwich.

ALWAYS a garlic and cheese chip, regardless of what chipper I go to. I think that might be just an Irish thing though? Not quite sure.

I have sausage and chips with gravy, with plenty of salt but no vinegar. Occasionally I have cod and chips, but it's twice price of the sausage meal at my local chippy. Sometimes I just have chips and gravy though!

lillymunster · 14/04/2019 22:33

Also, I live in the midlands and everyone I know says chippy. I'm not familiar with people calling it a chipper

SrSteveOskowski · 14/04/2019 22:37

I can't believe a thread about the chipper has run to 11 pages! Grin

I'm Cornish so not familiar with barm what is it ?

LimeKiwi · 14/04/2019 23:02

I can't believe a thread about the chipper has run to 11 pages!

I can, far too many variations in areas and people end up arguing if it's a bun, bap, barm, cake, or whatever lol
Not to mention all the "what's scraps? What's mealie pudding? and so on Grin

LimeKiwi · 14/04/2019 23:03

I'm Cornish so not familiar with barm what is it ?

I think it's yet another word for bread bun (cake/bap) lol

PortiaCastis · 14/04/2019 23:13

Ah ok thanks, yes very interesting to read all the different variations

Yabbers · 14/04/2019 23:31

@Mealiepudding

Has to be a North East mealie though. Central Belt "white pudding" is not so nice.

And, just for info, it is nothing like a black pudding.

Oatmeal and spices pretty much.

Cod & Chips, curry sauce and a wally for me

What on earth is a wally?!
A wally here is someone who's a bit daft in the head Grin

singingismypassion · 14/04/2019 23:43

Eww I can't think of anything I would least like to eat... sorry not my type of food EVER

Yabbers · 14/04/2019 23:45

@Celebelly

I agree, I grew up near Aberdeen and it is definitely the chipper.

Many, many fine chippers too. Torry Chip bar was my local as a student but it was worth the walk to Mike's Chipper. If I wanted something really fine, it had to be the Ashvale!

As a child we would always stop in past the Golden Fry on Holburn Street. I wonder if it's still there?

IncyWincyGrownUp · 15/04/2019 00:30

Fried food doesn’t agree with my digestive system, but I bloody love fish so sometimes take the hit. I only have the fish though, cod or haddock, with loads of salt and a splash of vinegar. Glorious!

Best fish I’ve had was from a wee chip shop near the ice arena in Kirkcaldy.

KissingInTheRain · 15/04/2019 00:42

Chippy.

Rock and chips. And a pickled egg.

Redact · 15/04/2019 01:28

Chipper where I live in Scotland too. Always have fish supper - battered haddock and chips with salt and vinegar yum!

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/04/2019 04:37

Do people who have fish and chips at lunchtime still ask for a fish supper?

In Yorkshire it's fish and chips once, twice, three, four times etc. You'll probably get asked if you want scraps (I don't).

Peas, curry or a breadcake are the most popular accompaniment or you might get a chip butty if you want a cheaper, filling meal.

As for vegetarians and beef dripping, sorry but tough, go somewhere else. If it's not beef dripping it's not fish and chips round here, they won't ruin the product to accommodate a minority who won't spend much anyway because all they buy is the cheapest part of the offering ie chips and mushy peas.

MotherofDinosaurs · 15/04/2019 07:54

Halloumi and chips for me

LoisEinhorn · 15/04/2019 08:07

Chips, pea fritter and curry sauce

Galaxy88 · 15/04/2019 08:37

batterycat yes! There's no other word, it's just breadcake here Grin

WhatNowRandy · 15/04/2019 08:43

Veggie burger with garlic mayo and salad and chips for me, which I'll eat with ketchup.

Not a vegetarian, so I don't really care that much with the chips and burger are cooked in (although I hope nothing rancid!), but I don't like beef burgers and live in fear of uncooked chicken, and nowhere near me does fish burgers.

DH is permanently sad that he can't get the kind of curry with chips he grew up with round here. Curry with chips sounds very wrong to me!

TheQueef · 15/04/2019 08:45

Is a chip butty a chip butty everywhere or do the regional breadcake come into it?

dustarr73 · 15/04/2019 08:48

@Curry with chips sounds very wrong to me!I love a trio out of the chinese.Sp nice

SpriggyTheHedgehog · 15/04/2019 08:49

It'd be a roll and chips here.(Glasgow)

AxCap · 15/04/2019 08:53

We moved and now the only chippy we like involves a 25 minute drive e/w so we can rarely be arsed but if we're nearby then between DH and I we get:

Single fish - haddock in tempura batter
Haggis supper with sweet potato fries
Pickled onion

Going to try the halloumi fries the next time too

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 15/04/2019 11:00

Chip roll.

April241 · 15/04/2019 12:02

Chip roll and gravy with a pickle, nom!!!
