To ask what Leavers are still hoping for from Brexit

So we’ve failed twice to actually leave the EU on the dates specified which has hopefully proved that we will never leave without a deal.

Therefore the only option is to leave with a worse deal, or just give the whole thing up as a bad idea.

What do Leavers think can be salvaged from this epic mess?

Oh God not another Brexit thread! Confused

There are 1000 already!

TheSultanofPingu · 13/04/2019 12:14

Well yes damn. Same as multiple threads on other topics.
Brexit is quite a big thing atm.

Bearbehind · 13/04/2019 12:20

I suspect there’s quite a high corealation between those who think ‘not another Brexit thread’ and Leavers, which adds to my query - you might not want to see anything about it any more so what do you want to happen.

Would people really be that bothered if it all just disappeared completely?

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 13/04/2019 14:34

Judging by this - noone would actually be bothered if it went away then 😂

Glad to hear, there are no people waiting on pink unicorns on mumsnet

Well yes probably because we're still waiting to hear the answer.

Ever since the vote I have searched for articulate leavers to make their case about why this is the best thing for the U.K. and I've struggled to find more than a handful.
Most resort to "we won so there"

DippyAvocado · 13/04/2019 15:03

The only arguments I've heard are: we can make our own rules (except mostly we can't as the EU will still have to be our biggest trading partner so we'll still have the single market regulations);

The EU are mean bullies who treated Greece badly. Well, the EU are very powerful, it's true. That's why it's worth being part of. Also, the stringent conditions on Greece were to do with the Euro, which we're not part of, and were largely due to reckless spending by the Greek government, who knew they would be subject to tough checks when they signed up to be part of the Euro;

Immigration. EU immigration has already dropped, draining our country of nirses, doctors, scientists. Non-EU immigration has increased to make up for it.

Other than that, people just seem to say we voted to leave so we should just leave. These people don't seem to know or care what the consequences are.

Numptysod · 13/04/2019 15:04

I am hoping the leavers see the unicorns flying into the sunset

scaryteacher · 13/04/2019 15:17

I am still hoping we leave without the trap of the WA.

I do not want increased federalisation; I don't like where PESCO will lead; I object to QMV; I object to matters that would formerly have had to go to the Council and then to national parliaments being changed to EU competencies and thus becoming non legislative changes, which can then be pushed through without our say so.

Dippy The punitive measures imposed on Greece were so that the French and German banks didn't lose their money....and the taxpayer has paid for it, as have a generation of Greeks with massive unemployment. Do you really think the EU weren't fully aware of the state of the Greek finances when they allowed Greece to be part of the EZ in 2001? Think about it...

Bearbehind · 13/04/2019 15:28

I am still hoping we leave without the trap of the WA.

Well that’s not going to happen.

The EU have been unequivocal about the fact that the WA can’t be reopened.

Any deal to leave requires the WA to be passed.

And it’s been proven we will not leave without a deal

So that’s just pointless false hope, which is exactly why this shambles continues.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 13/04/2019 15:31

The WA sets out the bill we have to settle, guarantees citizens' rights and has the NI backstop. I really don't see what is so objectionable about it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/04/2019 15:38

Oh God not another Brexit thread!

Yes, it silly to be talking about the biggest thing to affect the country since WWII. Particularly as we still have literally no clue about what form it will take. Could be anything currently.

otterturk · 13/04/2019 15:54

To actually leave

Bearbehind · 13/04/2019 16:05

To actually leave

But for what reason?

What will it achieve?

OP posts:
MrsTerryPratchett · 13/04/2019 16:06

To actually leave

I want to go on holiday. Where to? I don't care. OK, Sudan it is.

ForalltheSaints · 13/04/2019 16:09

Just as there was never one way to Leave, there is not one answer to this question. Donald Tusk may have put it badly, but many of those advocating Leave had no plan. scaryteacher seems to be one of the few Leavers able to articulate their reasons in any detail, other than 'that's what we voted for'.

Bearbehind · 13/04/2019 16:11

But what scaryteacher wants is impossible

I agree there are some Leavers who can articulate what they want but it’s a bit pointless if it can’t be achieved in reality.

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 13/04/2019 16:18

Scaryteacher the Eu has said repeatedly if we exit without a deal many of the main elements of the WA (including the backstop) will be central to any future trading arrangement with the EU.

So if we want to continue to trade with the EU (and I would assume given the size of the trading bloc that we will) then the backstop isn't going anywhere. We will just have even less leverage.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/04/2019 16:28

Why on earth would we want to trade with them? Our salad comes from Holland, fresh, quick and on time. We should TOTALLY fly it from California. Not fresh, extremely expensive and goodness knows if it will get in because of a no deal.

Sounds super.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/04/2019 16:28

Or China, also not fresh, and covered in whatever chemicals the Chinese deem 'safe'.

Ever more super.

Dana28 · 13/04/2019 16:29

No deal

Bearbehind · 13/04/2019 16:31

FGS Dana if we were going to leave without a deal we could have done so TWICE but didn’t so what still makes you think that is a possibility?

OP posts:
MrsTerryPratchett · 13/04/2019 16:36

No deal

Why?

TheSandman · 13/04/2019 16:49

Scottish Independence sounds good.

No matter what happens, the way Scottish and Welsh interests have been dealt with over this has finally shown that the English establishment are only really interested in their own welfare. The rest of us can go fuck ourselves as far as they are concerned. (As long as we don't do it too messily and spoil the view from the holiday cottage.)

The best I can hope for? The UK breaks up. (Not that it will be missed by many. It's less than 100 years old in its current form. It's not even technically an antique.)

So, England loses it's last vestiges of Empire - Scotland, Northern Ireland, Gibraltar, Wales, and has fun gammoning itself into historical obscurity endlessly congratulating itself for winning the World Cup in 1966 and watching Miss Marple , The Wooden Horse, and Only Fools and Horses on the television.
