To ask what Leavers are still hoping for from Brexit

So we’ve failed twice to actually leave the EU on the dates specified which has hopefully proved that we will never leave without a deal.

Therefore the only option is to leave with a worse deal, or just give the whole thing up as a bad idea.

What do Leavers think can be salvaged from this epic mess?

The English establishment looks after southern England. The North is treated with the same contempt as Wales and Scotland.

Very few people are going to do well out of this.

cushellekoala · 13/04/2019 16:57

I had a very weird convo with my dad about brexit the other day. He said he voted leave but he now realises he didn't really know what he was voting for. So i asked if there was another referendum what would you vote....and he still said leave. Followed by "well it wont be my generation it affects really..." (hes in his 80s) so basically he thinks it might be a bad idea but he won't have to put up with it for long! Great 🙄

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/04/2019 16:58

The English establishment looks after southern England.

London voted decisively for Remain, the mayor is strongly Remain and the marches have been enormous on London. Let's not pretend the political establishment is working in London's best interests either.

Windowsareforcheaters · 13/04/2019 17:00

I don't really class London as The South. London is it's own special enclave.

I'm thinking Home Counties.

Obviously the West Country isn't The South either.

lljkk · 13/04/2019 17:10

iirc ScaryTeacher has long lived in Belgium, so WTF do they care. Confused

The EU, T-May & M-Gove all say that WA has to precede any trade deal with EU. And this WA has been tortuously figured out & is only thing that fits inside everyone's red lines. No matter how many times they say it... many don't listen. Still. The anit-WA brigade talk about "Not this deal but a better deal or no deal" because they don't understand there is already no deal. We are miles (many years?) away from making any deal. Good or bad. That ability to not recognise that UK lost control of the process 2 yrs ago is truly phenomenal.

SleightOfMind · 13/04/2019 17:50

We’re not part of Pesco, we’ve opted out along with Denmark and possibly Malta?
Also, we’ve negotiated third country involvement on a case by case basis, plus an arrangement for our forces to train together and plan funding and infrastructure alongside the Pesco initiative to maintain alignment. This will continue even after a ND.

I agree that there are concerns about e.g. the command structure etc but Brexit won’t affect our involvement in Pesco, we’ll just have no say as to the future direction.

What are your concerns re QMV? It seems to have been working very well. Not something I’ve seen as cause for concern though so I might have missed something troubling. Really interested in what you think.

The Greek issues were complex but should have been handled better. Lessons have been learned in terms of entry reqs to the single currency and sources of fiscal support for member states. Work ongoing to avoid similar issues in future.

It’s not perfect by a long shot but if, as I hope, we elect more committed, hardworking MEPs in the upcoming elections, concerns about the way the Greek situation was handled can be addressed more purposefully. There is certainly a will among members to insure against a repeat.

Most leave supporters I know are free marketeers who are keen to deregulate financial services, open up our domestic markets, NHS etc to international competition, scale back on employment law and do away with most forms of taxation.

SleightOfMind · 13/04/2019 17:53

Whoops! Pressed post by accident.

Interesting to hear from someone who has more modern concerns Grin

madroid · 13/04/2019 17:58

I voted leave because I don't think it will benefit this country to be part of a federal Europe.
I think we should be a sovereign country that makes it's own laws. Europe has a poor history of democratic accountability. It's also already in recession I believe and our economy will do better apart once it recovers from the disruption of leaving (which could have been minimised if planned properly and executed promptly).

Now, I think we should have another referendum or a GE.

Bearbehind · 13/04/2019 18:01

madriod how do you reconcile that with the fact tha5, in order to trade with the EU, we’ll have to abide by their rules, only without a say in them?

That’s aside from the fact we never lost our soverignity in the first place.

Another original thread.... Hmm

Bearbehind · 13/04/2019 18:41

As I said above, I’m sure comments like the above only come from a Leavers.

Government gave the voting public the right to vote whether we remained in the EU or left. It was a democratic vote and the result was the vote to leave.
Since then government, media and businesses have done everything possible to stall the UK's exit from the EU....what a farce!!
I now have zero respect for politicians, the whole referendum was a travesty and highlighted exactly what we always assumed.....little people don't matter. The upper classes and the aristocrats decide what they want....and that's it.

I will NEVER vote again....EVER!!

Bearbehind · 13/04/2019 18:59

The upper classes and the aristocrats decide what they want....and that's it.

Well that’s not really true is it?

The really rich actually want to Leave with no deal because they’d make money on the back of it.

What did you hope to gain by leaving contended?

OP posts:
averylongtimeago · 13/04/2019 19:01

Most of the leavers I know (midlands shire) voted to: get rid of immigrants (preferably Muslim or brown ones) or because "Germany shouldn't be telling us what to do" (mostly older ones this) or some vague waffle about sovereignty and how we would be better trading with the empire commonwealth.

Now there are hopefully some leavers with better arguments, but I haven't heard them.

billysboy · 13/04/2019 19:05

Maybe its the company I hang out with but I dont know a single person that thinks staying in the eu is a good idea

Bearbehind · 13/04/2019 19:06

What reasons do they give billysboy?

OP posts:
PrimalLass · 13/04/2019 19:19

The clue may be in billysboy's username? Or I may be over thinking that.

lljkk · 13/04/2019 19:19

EU doesn't want us any more, anyway.
They want us out but stable & not disruptive.
We're an imploding disaster; EU strategy is onto damage limitation now.

ContinuityError · 13/04/2019 19:28

Maybe Farage www.thebrexitparty.com might have lots of Brexity policy ideas?

On the other hand, maybe not ...

LovelyJubbly67 · 13/04/2019 19:37

@TheSandman

Wales actually voted to Leave, same as England. But don't let that stop your rant.

Greeborising · 13/04/2019 19:42

What’s Brexit?

Citytwin · 13/04/2019 19:53

The couple of leave voters I’ve spoken to still can’t articulate what they want beyond “make our own laws”, “not be ruled by others” . I can’t really debate with them because they just have no idea what they’re talking about so can’t give any examples or detail to anything. The funny thing is that they are even more hardened leave supporters now and think no deal is best. Teresa May normalized no deal with all her no deal better than a bad deal lines, serious failure of leadership.

Bearbehind · 13/04/2019 20:05

What do they say about the fact TM has done a complete u-turn on ‘no deal is better than a bad deal and twice chosen to avoid leaving with no deal city?

OP posts:
Peregrina · 13/04/2019 20:06

and how we would be better trading with the empire commonwealth.

and how we would be better trading with the empire white commonwealth. Let's not pretend that people care about Kenyans, Nigerians, Fijians, Zimbabweans.....
