Two weeks holiday and 2 bank holidays means only 10 days of school in April. AIBU to be annoyed?

Oh dear op guess what in August there are ZERO days of school Shock how very rude for schools to give our children a well needed break, and heaven forbid the teachers have their own families -spouses/children that they would like to spend time with! Hmm

Did the OP ever come back?

Erm! Schools give you their holidays years in advance and Easter moves each year! Some times it's earlier sometimes it's later they still end up with the same amount of holidays. Seriously

We only have 180 educational days in the US with the full summer, June 15 or so through Sept 4thish off every year. But we only get two days for Easter break (spring break, sorry :) Good Friday and Easter Monday. Not to much time throughout the school year off short of 1 week for Christmas, Sorry Winter break :)

Mine only have 5 days in April (off 29th March till 24th April) but I love that they get a nice long break, the summer term is crazy for them so it's the calm before the storm!! I have to work so it's a pain but they are old enough to amuse themselves as are 13 and 11.

DS has only...wait for it....three days of school in April! He's already been off for a week. I'm LOVING it!!! I'm afraid YABVU to not want to spend time with your children.

@celticprincess
I’m not on about the money. It’s about feeling the extra time off on those bank holidays. Was a bit tongue in cheek though.

I get you, think I have spent too much time on the employment board

I'm annoyed because my poor precious DS has 12 days of school this month. Another damn week of him driving me up the wall because he could do with a break.
But on the other hand, having the week either side of Easter off makes much more sense, and I only have to take 8 days off instead of 10

Looks likely to be only 16 days here in May too, with half term + May Day + likely EU elections

Well, it's apparently not enough schooling for some, which is why the vast majority of staff I know in different schools are all doing intensive revision days all next week - and have been working every Saturday all day doing the same since before Christmas. Which doesn't include those foolhardy brave souls who have given up a week off to be on duty 24/7 on residential trips. And will be doing their own subject revision days the following week to make up for the time away.

It can actually make a big difference where Easter falls in terms of leave as leave runs from April 1st to March 31st so some years Easter falls twice in the same leave year making it more difficult to have time off with the kids.

Some local authorities - well at least Leeds that I know of- always have the first 2 weeks of April as school holidays, regardless of where the bank holidays are. Thus year they are actually back to school for 4 days before Good Friday, whereas we - in a neighbouring authority - don’t even break up until Maundy Thursday. I like Leeds’ approach, it removes the variability of “Easter”, means that the holidays don’t fall into the sane leave year for parents, and removes the really silly, short 4/5 week term we get either before an early Easter, or after a late one.

You should try living in France. No school on Wednesdays, endless bank holidays (4 in May alone) and strikes with 24 hour notice.

DH was hugely put out when I eventually admitted to him that my absolute favourite part of any school holiday was him having to get out of bed when I got to snuggle back down under the covers. It's difficult to describe just what a lovely feeling that is!

I don't think your being unreasonable all depends on your personal circumstances. I'm glad the kids got 2 weeks off as I'm due to have another baby within the next week so will be nice for us all to have time off as a family together 😊

Interesting. How does that work with working parents needing time off at the last minute (presuming you mean teacher strikes?) ?

A kid in my class yesterday asked me what I was going to do for 2 whole weeks without them there. I replied that all is members of staff had homes and families away from school and that we weren’t going to just sit at our desks waiting for them to come back for 2 weeks Grin
It was a genuine tumbleweed moment as he processed this shocking information - I think until that point in his life that he presumed we were all part of the school furniture and never left the building!!
