Two weeks holiday and 2 bank holidays means only 10 days of school in April. AIBU to be annoyed?

@LucyBabs Ireland?? 😂😂

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 05/04/2019 08:33

@LucyBabs I’m the same as you. 9 weeks in the summer, it’s a killer. Kids here get over 15 weeks holidays a year and that’s not even including bank holidays, European elections, in service days etc.

echt · 05/04/2019 08:39

And the school told you this over a year ago, probably, yet you’re surprised? Duh!

In Australia, you can view the term dates for government schools to 2025. While some LAs in the UK might not do this. I'm pretty sure they posted well in advance for 2019, because Easter is a movable feast.

Which any fule kno.

singingismypassion · 05/04/2019 08:49

My kids have 3 days of school in April!!!!
It's fabulous family time which is well needed.

CornishMaid1 · 05/04/2019 09:02

Is it a sudden surprise for you OP? I have known when Easter was for a while now.

I do think it is a bit of a pain for people that the Easter holidays do move - so a late Easter means a longer spring term and a shorter summer term/less time before exams. I think they could leave the bank holidays for Easter but actually set Easter so it is always the same two weeks to help everyone out so that it doesn't really change as much.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/04/2019 09:04

I wish my kids had longer off... Especially since half term is set at the second week in February, and they have another week of school to go... So this half term has been 8 weeks long. The children and teachers are exhausted.

NicksWife08 · 05/04/2019 09:12

I'm laughing because my children are home educated and both will be attending their tutor and classes more than any children we know that go to school. 19 days this month.

Kaykay06 · 05/04/2019 09:42

Our Easter hols are set to the first two weeks of April no matter when Easter falls so they go back a week on Monday for 2 4 day weeks, not entirely sure the op issue doesn’t bother me at all we get less than ten school days.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 05/04/2019 09:45

YABU OP. I feel like I've barely seen my DC for the last 7 weeks with school, clubs, activities and busy weekends. A huge restful fortnight with some trips out is exactly what our family needs.

Not to mention the sheer exhaustion currently going on in my class (Reception). They need the break so badly; they need to ride their bikes, play on consoles, have trips to the park and switch off for a little while. We bombard them with so much each day that when holidays roll around I'm thrilled for them to enjoy some peace; they come back full of excitement and ready for the next term's learning.

showmewhatyougot · 05/04/2019 09:57

I have heard there's 0 school days in August!

On a serious note, this happens most years, why so surprised? :S

Mistlewoeandwhine · 05/04/2019 10:22

Why did you have kids then?

LucyBabs · 05/04/2019 17:21

@youngandfree Yep Ireland :-) Wouldn't be so bad if we got good weather.

jebuschrist The 9 weeks is really ridiculous, we're ready to go back after 4!

Jogonandshutup · 05/04/2019 17:30

Ah because you have to look after your own kids OP?!?!

Cookies2015 · 05/04/2019 17:36

Quite frankly I imagine that the teachers will be needing their time off after having to look after all those children, not like they are just allowed to take a day out when they fancy it is, like you can choose to do if you're not a teacher and fancy a break! If you think about it lots have their own children so don't imagine they've had a day to themselves in years. Easter falls where it falls this isn't set by the school so can't blame them for when the holiday takes place. Our school usually gives the holidays at the beginning of the year so it's not like you don't know when it's going to be and for how long

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/04/2019 17:40

Ours get 12 Smile, though most of them are being spent preparing for the Eisteddfod.

Cockadoodledooo · 05/04/2019 17:42

11 days here (well, 10.5 for ds1 who finished at lunchtime today).
Don't understand the problem. Easter holidays would still be 2 weeks long in March?

Cath2907 · 05/04/2019 17:57

I am annoyed work doesn't give me all that much time off too so I only have to work 10 days in April!

BlueJava · 05/04/2019 17:57

YABU - I love having my 2 DS at home!

Vivianebrezilletbrooks · 05/04/2019 18:04

There's this month called August...let me count how many school days in that month...ooh....wow, it's less than April! Grin

MyOtherProfile · 05/04/2019 18:06

This thread has made me laugh out loud. Bit embarrassing as I'm sitting on a train!

Youhadmeathello1 · 05/04/2019 18:08

For my daughter only 5 days in April and 5 in July. She does a long school day and gets longer holidays - it is what it is. It’s Easter, it happens, you cannot change it, so yes you are BU.

BoomBoomsCousin · 05/04/2019 18:08

I think simple annoyance at most of April being holiday is BU. After all, all of August is holiday.

But having the two week Easter holiday move around instead of it being set and the terms being more evenly spread is annoying. Would perhaps be better to just have Easter Monday off and have the half term set. But then the whole school year needs an overhaul really and we aren't likely to do that at the moment because there is no stomach for the fights over what it should be or the painful transition.

TalkinPaece · 05/04/2019 18:09

at least the Spring Equinox does not move,
its just that pesky lunar cycle
and the Sunday
that messes things up Smile

Zebedee88 · 05/04/2019 18:11

The children I look after only have 5 days of school in April. They go to private school and have already had a week off, they have 3 and a bit weeks off in total

FastLane46 · 05/04/2019 18:11

I'm annoyed to!
I have to spend 2 whole weeks with my own child.

Fuming I tell thee.

Gonna write to the council, the government and Jesus, it's a travesty!
