10 days of school in April

Two weeks holiday and 2 bank holidays means only 10 days of school in April. AIBU to be annoyed?

OP posts:

YABU - what are you annoyed about?

Schools have had Easter holidays for years - it falls when it falls and there is nothing schools can do about it!

Frankly, as a teacher, I am thrilled that I have two weeks off after tomorrow. I am bloody exhausted after a manic term, multiple voluntary revision sessions and running a huge whole school event this week which has given our children a brilliant experience.I need a break!

Equally my reception aged son is exhausted after a busy term and needs a break.

Oh and before you say anything, I am giving up (voluntarily) some of my holidays to go.into school to do revision days for my Y13 students.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 04/04/2019 18:42

It's almost like the county council don't publish the school terms for the following 3 years or so in advance!

Our County council does always make sure that the Easter weekend falls in the holiday 2 weeks off, to be fair. But that means very uneven terms. We have 3 weeks and 4 days for half a term after Easter, for example, in May.

killpop · 04/04/2019 18:44

@1shotcappuccino

Isn't your kid 12? Have they been homeschooled until now?

Yabbers · 04/04/2019 18:46

Right, folk saying OP is BU, but our “Easter holidays” are April 4th to April 15th, they are back for 4 days then off for Easter weekend.

As a working parent, that’s difficult to juggle. Why not knock it forward a week and run it through the Easter weekend?

DishingOutDone · 04/04/2019 18:46

OP gone to have lie down on finding out that everyone else ALREADY KNEW Confused

Didyeeaye · 04/04/2019 18:50

Actually PMSL at these comments! My DS doesnt start school till August but I do grudge paying nursery for holidays but understand it's the way it is.

Home77 · 04/04/2019 18:52

They have holiday clubs?

ApolloandDaphne · 04/04/2019 18:53

@TeacupDrama. Not in Fife they don't. They come off tomorrow.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/04/2019 18:53

I make it 11days.

RainbowFox · 04/04/2019 18:54

You might want to sit down before I tell you what happens in August.

The date of Easter in 2019 was known about in 1752 when the Gregorian calendar was introduced in the UK, and school holidays have been broadly the same for at least fifty years.

So you have had plenty of warning.*

Come on everyone: Surely the OP is a teacher and she's just devastated to find she'll only be seeing her class for 10 days. Give her a bit of slack.

As every parent knows, teachers spend the holidays missing every child and weeping quietly into their cups of tea. not

clary · 04/04/2019 18:55

Yah bets they will do two extra days at school some other time to make up for that, eg later summer break up, so you'll need fewer days off from work then.

clary · 04/04/2019 18:56

Sorry I was talking to Yabbers there!

implantsandaDyson · 04/04/2019 18:57

My primary school kids get 6 school days off for Easter and have no school days in July or August Shock.

killpop · 04/04/2019 18:57

11 here too Dobby.

In fact, our secondary schools finish half day Friday, so really it's only 9 whole days and two halves!!!!

I want my money back.

TriciaH87 · 04/04/2019 19:00

The two bank holidays are part of the easter holiday every year. So you think the calendar is unreasonable because Easter falls mid April but if it fell so it was a week in March and a week in April that would be fine? Same holiday they get every year its just a bit later.

LittlePaintBox · 04/04/2019 19:00

YAB completely U. What's your problem, OP?

JAMMFYesPlease · 04/04/2019 19:01

Loving some of these replies.

Although to whoever mentioned Scotland goes back in August...yes but they're not at school at all in July. OP would be upset about that. Wink

m0therofdragons · 04/04/2019 19:01

Huh? My dc are tired and very ready for this holiday (which is the same length as every other year). What a bizarre thread. I'm actually off for 1.5 weeks for the first time since October so can't wait!

LipstickTaserrr · 04/04/2019 19:02

Our areas schools broke up on Friday, we are already at the end of our first week off who do I complain to if the weather is better during the third week?!

Knowing there are only 10 school runs to juggle with a 12 week old baby sounds great to me.

lyralalala · 04/04/2019 19:03

As a working parent, that’s difficult to juggle. Why not knock it forward a week and run it through the Easter weekend?

It’s easier for schools for planning if terms are a similar length. Easter moves so much it’s better to have a set term end and then on the years the Easter weekend falls out with that to juggle round it.

Otherwise you can end up with a really short Christmas-Easter term if Easter is early, or a short Easter-summer term. It works better equally split.

nokidshere · 04/04/2019 19:03

My first year uni son isn't at uni at all in April

Lovemusic33 · 04/04/2019 19:03

Got to love mumsnet, no ones allowed to be annoyed 😠

I agree with OP, and it’s not always easy to find child care. I don’t have any child care, my child is disabled and needs 1:1 if she attends any clubs and is to old for most clubs, it means I can work much which means money will be tight so yes, I do think it’s a pain. My dd broke up today and goes back on the Tuesday after Easter Monday. School holidays and bank holidays cost me a fortune. There’s also the food shopping bill which seems to double when the dc are at home. I don’t see school as ‘free child care’ but without it I can not work as many hours.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/04/2019 19:04

My kids have 12 school days in April... Are they lucky or unlucky that it appears they have more than everyone else?

mclaleli · 04/04/2019 19:05

in Scotland they are off for 1st 2 weeks in april ( the Spring /easter holiday is always first two weeks)

*in some parts of Scotland. Because where we are they are off next week and the week after.
