To be really angry? I've even cried

My new job, of which I'm suppose to start next week, have called to have a chat.

They wanted to ask why one of my references came back as 'Had a lot of time off sick' (not sure if old work gave dates).

I was off a lot for the majority of my time in that role (about a year) due to crippling Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG). My spelling may be slightly off there.

Anyway, since it is completely pregnancy related, I didn't think they could mention it in a reference.

But it's been mentioned and new employer now sounds very sceptical. I tried to explain what it is and I got a very abrupt 'We know what HG is'.

I just don't know what to do Sad I really need/want this job and feel like crying. New job have said they're speaking to HR for a chat about it.

AIBU to be really angry at old work?

Do you not ever see middle grounds?

Lie vs not have a job
Job hope vs work everywhere for 10 years

It's ridiculous, and no to answer your question

boringlyboring · 06/04/2019 18:18

Same here polar except majority of mine weren’t even temping jobs. Never found it to be an issue, many interviewers comment (positively) on the various sectors I’ve experienced. I’m on my 7th job in 8 years Blush

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 06/04/2019 18:24

I can’t imagine why they’re commenting positively on that, boring

Bess66 · 06/04/2019 18:25

To be polite or they are in a job like PM etc is my huessy

Bess66 · 06/04/2019 18:26

Guess

thewinkingprawn · 06/04/2019 18:27

7th job in 8 years unless you are a serial temp or a consultant (in which case no one will care) and it doesn’t apply to this situation, I cannot imagine anyone talking about that in a positive light and I have recruited for many companies over the course of my career.

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 06/04/2019 18:28

A person with a single years experience in 7 vastly different sectors is not normally someone who’d be considered a huge asset, tbh

boringlyboring · 06/04/2019 18:31

Well I still get the job offers, so they obviously like something!

Bess66 · 06/04/2019 18:32

Superficial knowledge at that. You can't know an industry in a year

Bess66 · 06/04/2019 18:32

Maybe your socks

Polarbearflavour · 06/04/2019 18:35

I also get bored after a year so contract work suits me even though some of those job have been perm. worked in various sectors too. Never had an issue finding work.

boringlyboring · 06/04/2019 18:35

Possibly bess66, I buy posh ones

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 06/04/2019 18:38

What sort of work do you do, boring? I won’t ask what industry you’re in as you appear to have had a finger in multiple pies.

Polarbearflavour · 06/04/2019 18:41

Well as Bess66 said in a few posts up...there is always a middle ground isn’t there? Wink

Not everybody is going to be put off by various stints in different industries.

Dowser · 06/04/2019 18:47

My son got suspended from work and then dismissed.
He went for an interview at old job which he got back and told them about the situation
They said they were fine about it

Then while waiting for his start date he got told...they were withdrawing their job offer

He’d worked their ten years...been in an acting supervisor role on occasions

He was gutted. He tried for 10 jobs and told them about the dismissal and got replies saying they would not take it any further

I didn’t think they could do this as he was upfront about it, knew his work, he’s a hard worker..but yes they did

TheMShip · 06/04/2019 18:48

TheGrey, can you really not do maths?? 21-5=16.... Perfectly normal age to start work.

TSSDNCOP · 06/04/2019 18:50

I am in my 5th job in 6 years, my CV dates match up perfectly and I can explain every move even though they are quite diverse.

I am in HR, and respond to reference requests with questions on time off for sickness. Your ex-employer should not have included pregnancy related absence.

My advice, talk directly to the HR person at your new job and explain that most of your absence is pregnancy related.

Also, thanking you for the DBS return does not mean you have a DBS cert issued. It means that the person that has applied for the DBS can see you have completed your side and can enter the verification details to initiate the actual search. DBS certs can take many weeks to complete IME - I have 2 that are 6 weeks old.

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 06/04/2019 18:53

There’s a maternity leave in there too? Confused. Unless this too is being touted as part of her “experience”.
Plus op doesn’t say how old her child is, or how long she’s been out of the workplace. Quite a while, if her last workplace has literally disappeared without trace.

boringlyboring · 06/04/2019 19:07

Last few years have been things like asset management, projects. Last year I was in facilities management. So we’re not talking vastly different jobs like mechanic one year, nurse the next, but different areas such as social housing, manufacturing, commerical.

Tbh, in many of my jobs, there have been senior management I’ve known to have changed jobs regularly. Maybe it depends on the area, whether it matters.

MidsomerBurgers · 06/04/2019 19:24

By 21 I was on probably my 10th job?? I never had an issue at interviews about that. I doubt this is what the prospective employers are concerned about.

Bess66 · 06/04/2019 19:31

Keep up Midsomer. There are far bigger issues here.

MidsomerBurgers · 06/04/2019 19:33

Keep up @Bess66. Read my previous post.

thewinkingprawn · 06/04/2019 19:51

I suppose it depends what these many jobs are - working in a different shop or bar and changing jobs multiple times in 6-7 years who cares. A lawyer who moved from firm to firm every few months not so fine. Recruitment for good jobs is expensive and you are looking at wanting people to stay minimum 2 years but really much longer as they grow their career with you. Consultants obv move round a lot. I don’t think we are talking apples for apples with many of these posts regarding job movement 😀

Bess66 · 06/04/2019 19:59

I agree prawn

They are not allowed to divulge any medical information without your consent. Telephone ACAS, also your old employers. Unacceptable practice.
