Brexit - what is the point?

Bearbehind · 09/03/2019 18:32

Theresa May is blatantly running down the clock in an attempt to force her Withdrawal Agreement through.

An agreeement which is the worst of all world because we are still tied to EU regulations with no seat at the table but it’s worse that our current deal.

If her deal is voted down then the next step is a vote to take ‘no deal’ off the table, which will almost certainly pass.

So what is the actual point at this stage?

What are people hoping will happen?

(MN - please do not banish this to the Brexit Corner - this is the biggest thing to affect the UK in a generation and it’s happening in the next 3 weeks)

Really sorry to hear that BTB :( I'm worried about whether my Mum will be able to finish her chemotherapy course.

transit007 · 09/03/2019 23:45

BTB, you should have contacted your local council. You could have got someone from your family to vote for you. Don’t forget to contact your council to do this in case there is another vote or a general election. It’s an easy process.

Wherearemychickens. In or out is not going to make the slightest difference to us here, they need our money and also the government are saying you look after ours and we will reciprocate. The Spanish will have to fall in line as they need the Brits abroad money and also the holidaymakers. The EU have kicked up about it but these poorer EU countries cannot afford to lose us or holidaymakers money so ignore the EU which to be bloody honest is not unusual! Basically and to put it bluntly, these countries need EU money but stick the middle finger up to EU laws. The Brits abide by every dot and dash and that has been the downfall.

BollocksToBrexit · 09/03/2019 23:47

It's a fucking nightmare that you can't wake up from isn't it. A couple of weeks ago I found my wonderful husband crying in his office over fucking brexit. We've been together almost 25 years and I've never seen him upset and worried like this before. I curse brexit and all the fuckwits who voted for it.

transit007 · 09/03/2019 23:49

BTB
Why if you have lived in the EU country for 12 years and your husband/partner works in the EU have you not claimed disability benefits in the country you live in for you and your children? You should have residence?

BollocksToBrexit · 09/03/2019 23:49

My family in the UK all voted for this shit show. I'd rather trust my cat with a proxy vote than any of them.

BollocksToBrexit · 09/03/2019 23:53

Disability benefits are contribution based. I haven't ever worked here so I'm not entitled to anything. For now, under EU rules, I get disability benefits from the UK as that's where I worked and paid in. Still don't know what will happen post brexit in that respect.

SparklySneakers · 09/03/2019 23:54

ThanksCakeGinto all those who are worrying about how brexit will affect them or has already affected them.

wherearemychickens · 09/03/2019 23:55

Are you retired or working, Transit? If the former, have you got your S1 certificate sorted?

The driving licence thing is a pain as well. I couldn't believe how old school it was when I went to get the international driving licences. Pritt stick was involved!

transit007 · 09/03/2019 23:56

BTB
Nothing will change, I was advised by the DWP two weeks ago. Also, they are preparing for a no deal.

MardyBra · 09/03/2019 23:57

Not RTFT
Land of Hope and Glory.take back control where we’d neverlost it. Fed up with austerity and Cameron. Kick out people with brown or black faces - or an Eastern European accent - who hugely contribute to our economy. Bring back rationing. Wartime spirit channeled by people not old enough to have experienced the war. Let’s all channel Vera lynn. Can you tell I’ve been drinking.?

transit007 · 09/03/2019 23:59

Don’t need an S1 old hat. Already registered with the local doctors and all carries on as normal. No change.

I have my IDP, 1968 for Portugal. Will need to get 1949 for Spain. Yes pritt stick involved.

wherearemychickens · 09/03/2019 23:59

Oh, no, I've read it again - sorry, the S1 certificate is what you have now, but it might not be valid after 29 March. What happens then then? You need private insurance?

transit007 · 10/03/2019 00:01

No private insurance not required, reciprocate is in place.

Random18 · 10/03/2019 00:01

@mardygras i’m Having Champagne on the 29th.
Not to celebrate, but it may be the last time I can afford it for a while.
Although Brexit may be good for my
Alcohol consumption- never did like Whisky

wherearemychickens · 10/03/2019 00:02

I had to have an argument with my insurer to get a green card valid for the length of my insurance - they were initially just going to give to me until the end of May, despite their cover covering 90 days in Europe.

transit007 · 10/03/2019 00:05

Where are my chickens
Are you over 50, pardon me for asking

transit007 · 10/03/2019 00:06

Why drink champagne? Never liked the stuff the French produced much better where the grapes have kissed the sun

wherearemychickens · 10/03/2019 00:07

Transit - how can those reciprocal arrangements be in place already? You need for this Bill to go through don't you?

services.parliament.uk/bills/2017-19/healthcareinternationalarrangements.html

This looks to be the legislation that would enable the UK to set up reciprocal arrangements with EU countries in the event of no-deal.

It doesn't have Royal Assent yet.

wherearemychickens · 10/03/2019 00:08

Me, no, not yet :)

BollocksToBrexit · 10/03/2019 00:08

When I first moved here I kept getting parking tickets because they thought my UK issued blue badge was homemade. It definitely looked like a pritt stick and sticky backed plastic blue peter job compared to the ones issued here.

corythatwas · 10/03/2019 00:25

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld could you explain what you think is going to get better for people like you after Brexit?

Factories are moving abroad, some of the leading Brexiteers are already talking openly about selling off the NHS and cutting down on workers' rights, all trade deals will have to be renegotiated and that from a much weaker position: how exactly will any of this help the poorer areas of the north?

As for FOM (if you do believe this is a negative) several non-European countries are already saying they will insist on FOM for their citizens before they agree any trade deals. It wasn't exactly difficult to work out that once we are on our own, without the backing of the EU, the rest of the world will drive a harder bargain.

Peregrina · 10/03/2019 06:15

See, I can see a point to some kind of two tier regulatory structure for the EU, with the UK leading in the outer tier, plugged in to the single market and customs union but with opts out on some of the more political ends in some kind of Association Agreement.

Cameron said No to this, because he wanted to be at 'the top table.'

I know what a pot bank is, having also spent my teens in N Staffs. A little to the north of Stoke is Leek, which was a textile town. In the whole area the workforce was pretty conscientious, and not strike prone, that I recall, but by the late sixties industry was moving to the Far East. IMO it was a combination of poor management and lack of investment. In 1970, before we were in the EEC, I can remember one mill going bankrupt and seeing whole families who'd all worked there queuing to see whether the administrators would be able to give them their wages. They also had some N Staffs coal mines - nothing like as militant as the Yorkshire coal fields. What happened? They closed too.

So is Leaving going to bring that industry back from the Far East and reopen the Pits?

longwayoff · 10/03/2019 08:13

There'll bluebirds over
The white cliffs of Dover

And we'll be shooting the damned things for dinner. Well done Tory brexit loons.

wherearemychickens · 10/03/2019 08:14

No Peregrina, it won't.

SparklySneakers · 10/03/2019 08:20

No response from the leavers then. What a surprise!
