Brexit - what is the point?

Bearbehind · 09/03/2019 18:32

Theresa May is blatantly running down the clock in an attempt to force her Withdrawal Agreement through.

An agreeement which is the worst of all world because we are still tied to EU regulations with no seat at the table but it’s worse that our current deal.

If her deal is voted down then the next step is a vote to take ‘no deal’ off the table, which will almost certainly pass.

So what is the actual point at this stage?

What are people hoping will happen?

(MN - please do not banish this to the Brexit Corner - this is the biggest thing to affect the UK in a generation and it’s happening in the next 3 weeks)

For a starts this...

www.express.co.uk/news/world/888853/Brexit-news-cars-German-car-exports

Plus the 45m cases of Wine imported from Spain, Italy and France.

You think they want to pay tariffs any more than we do?

Bearbehind · 10/03/2019 18:59

I don’t doubt that they would rather not pay tariffs but the fact is they are prepared to in order to maintain the integrity of the SM.

They’ve actually planned for this - we haven’t.

I call brexit bingo!

FishesaPlenty · 10/03/2019 19:03

I say we should leave with no deal, every other country manages who isn't in the EU.

No country in the world 'manages' without having trade deals with its most significant trading partners - usually the geographically closest major economies.

But yes, we can 'manage'. We'll become something less than different to what we are now though.

Songsofexperience · 10/03/2019 19:04

I've never been a fan of Mélenchon and this is confirmed by reading this really unnecessary and divisive letter; there is so much wrong with it I don't even know where to start!

Typical ignorant leaver.

It would be us paying the tariffs on the 45m cases of Wine imported from Spain, Italy and France. Do you really still not understand that?

FishesaPlenty · 10/03/2019 19:11

It's a pity then that our MEP on the EU fisheries committee couldn't bother himself to attend more than 1 meeting out of the 42 he could have attended.

Who's that Peregrina? Some 'enemy of the people' who couldn't give a damn about hardworking UK fishermen no doubt? He should be ridiculed on the front page of the DM for his anti-British attitude.

ContinuityError · 10/03/2019 19:59

The UK’s proposed tariff is about 8p per bottle for still wine (compare to excise duty at £2.23 + VAT) and about 20p per bottle for sparkling (excise duty is £2.86 + VAT).

And it’s the UK importer (and ultimately the UK consumer) that pays the tariff.

Don’t listen to the Spoons nutter.

lljkk · 10/03/2019 19:59

Nobody needs wine. Weird import to focus on.

Insulin, though, and radioactive isotopes for cancer treatment. Those tick the necessary to survive box.

Transit, not that it's any of your business but that NI contribution is me and dh combined incomes and no we don't earn mega bucks and no I'm not bragging was making a point that no we don't get nhs and school services for free we pay for ourselves and people who for what ever reason can't contribute which I'm more than happy to do.
And as for the bullshit about being humble and volunteering, I spend large amount of time volunteering for two local charities thank you very much.

DippyAvocado · 10/03/2019 20:15

Here is an explanation in that well -known pro-Remain publication, the Daily Express about how the UK GOVERNMENT sold the fishing quotas so that Spain controls access to much of the fishing on the West coast of Britain and the Netherlands/Iceland hold rights to much of the East coast. According to the author, these rights were sold permanently so Brexit will make not a jot of difference!

Rosie forever
I didn’t say it was any of my business, however, to pay NI of 1k per month when the contribution on the Zrate is 2% is rather a lot of money.

Good on you if you volunteer.

You didn’t mention anything about the 600 euro basic wage and 150 net payment that the people pay in one of the EU countries.

By the way don’t emigrate to France as dear old Macron has bought in national service for 16 year olds through the back door. I believe two other European countries have done this also to solve the young unemployment problem. Nothing to do with the EU but didn’t take into account their rights.

jasjas1973 · 10/03/2019 21:25

France only got ride of NS in 97, the new version has a very limited Military content.
Sweden (bastion of right wing extremism) and Lithuania are re introducing the Military side of NS, mainly because of Russia and the Baltics.

Whats your issue with this, aside that a European country is doing this and not the UK.

transit007 · 10/03/2019 23:13

No issue, they should introduce it into the UK.

Peregrina · 11/03/2019 07:44

Why should we introduce conscription again? Do we have a superpower on our Eastern Border? I thought we were wholly against a European Army, preferring to go along with whatever war the American President chooses to fight.

Personally, I think, however some form of Social Service, perhaps allied with a reduction or remission of Student fees, could be quite a good idea. Especially for those young people in the mould of Johnson, Davis, Fox, Redwood, who seem to have grown up being thoroughly selfish, despite (or because of) enormous privilege.

BollocksToBrexit · 11/03/2019 07:50

In Sweden national service isn't by conscription. People put themselves forward and have to go through a selection process as they have way more people wanting to do it than positions available.

Peregrina · 11/03/2019 08:19

While in the UK we miss recruitment targets, but that may be due to the task being outsourced to Capita, (In the belief that public sector bad, private sector always good.)

jasjas1973 · 11/03/2019 08:34

Very sad...& completely avoidable.

www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2019/03/11/new-research-lays-bare-900bn-city-brexodus/

£900 billion in moved assets to EU, the lost tax revenue is the equivalent of 1% of income tax....with more to go, money lost forever from our much under funded public services...
Well done moronic brexitiers and govt.

The myth that the tories are the party of economic competence is well and truly destroyed.

transit007 · 11/03/2019 08:35

Swedish NS is mandatory.

Cameron introduced “big society” for volunteering for the youth which has largely been a flop and money wasted according to some reports 10m.

French NS is in two parts, one month then later 3-12 dependent upon military or social.

Peregrina. Without the financing of WW2 and military help of the US where would Europe be now for the UK was broke. The UK finally finished paying for that in 2006. I confess to not knowing if we received any reparations from the country who started the problems in Europe. I very much doubt it, they were too busy building themselves up to become a European power through finance and prosperity. The UK were left to pick up the bill.

jasjas1973 · 11/03/2019 08:50

Transit - the UK received the most from the Marshall aid program but instead of investing in industry, wasted it on rebuilding the common wealth.
www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/modern/marshall_01.shtml

Seems we are still pursuing this dream!!!

Punitive measures against Germany after WW1 led directly to the collapse of Germany's economy and the rise of Hitler.
so yes repeat the same mistake and have another war........

the US charging us extortionate interest rates on monies lent shows there is no real Special Relationship.

BejamNostalgia · 11/03/2019 09:01

I’ve not heard a single reason for leaving the EU that we actually couldn’t have addressed whilst still in the EU.*

Most notably immigration.

How would you have addressed that?

Bearbehind · 11/03/2019 09:06

We could always have applied and enforced rules to restrict EU immigration - we just chose not to.

Plus, EU immigration will just be replaced with non-EU so what people perceive as a problem won’t change anyway.

OP posts:
Songsofexperience · 11/03/2019 09:13

*Most notably immigration.

Ha! By making EU nationals sufficiently unwelcome so that they leave in their droves! Aim already achieved: 2018 saw a collapse of net EU migration. Non EU at record levels though- the one category that the UK has always had full control over.

Maldives2006 · 11/03/2019 09:39

As a family we already pay a higher rate tax, council tax, lost child benefit and how much more do you want us to pay. We’re from working class families in rundown areas and have worked damn hard to get to we are!!!

We are remainers because we have the foresight and age experience to know that the government are not suddenly going to suddenly start investing in the north because there is no financial incentives international companies are leaving the U.K. because of Brexit what would people like to see replace them.

We will also lose all of the EU funding which has paid for essentials like internet coverage in Liverpool. So if the government doesn’t have money to pay for basics needed for a modern economy in these areas where do Brexiteers think the money is going to come from!!!
