Brexit - what is the point?

Bearbehind · 09/03/2019 18:32

Theresa May is blatantly running down the clock in an attempt to force her Withdrawal Agreement through.

An agreeement which is the worst of all world because we are still tied to EU regulations with no seat at the table but it’s worse that our current deal.

If her deal is voted down then the next step is a vote to take ‘no deal’ off the table, which will almost certainly pass.

So what is the actual point at this stage?

What are people hoping will happen?

(MN - please do not banish this to the Brexit Corner - this is the biggest thing to affect the UK in a generation and it’s happening in the next 3 weeks)

To whom?
Wherearemychickens?

SparklySneakers · 09/03/2019 23:08

Random18 tbh I thought it was maybe a drugs reference, like an opium den but for cannabis. My ignorance runs to drugs as well as pottery manufacturing Grin

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld · 09/03/2019 23:11

Random 18, whatt has you being Scottish got to do with it? There were/are Scottish potteries, Wemyss Ware for example.

wherearemychickens · 09/03/2019 23:12

I don't know Transit, as I don't know to what you're referring. But my first thoughts would be the police, my MP, my MEP, and googling 'how to report fraud to the EU' comes up with this link:

ec.europa.eu/anti-fraud/olaf-and-you/report-fraud_en

taking you to the European Anti-Fraud Office. I should think they would be interested? Looks like what they exist to do.

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld · 09/03/2019 23:13

Sparkly, your not knowing or being able to google what a pot bank is, is not the prime source of your ignorance. More your inability to understand another person's experiences or different choices to you.

BollocksToBrexit · 09/03/2019 23:17

This is not brexit bullshit. You see, remain people and those of you that just take your hols in the EU don’t see what really goes on behind the scenes. It’s not all sangria and sun, it’s greasing palms. It’s not bullshit believe what you want, you are not looking at the full story. Being bitter about how your countryfolk voted and not letting the democratic process be fulfilled is more damaging than the vote itself.

I live in another EU country and my husband is an EU scientist. I know very well what goes on behind the scenes. And yes I am bitter that brexit bullshit and ignorant, racist bigots have voted away my family's future, while denying me and my family a vote.

Random18 · 09/03/2019 23:17

I am not from Fife......
I did google it and I think the potteries are forgotten about.
But it’s not a term I know - sorry about that

Tr1skel1on · 09/03/2019 23:19

As an aside, if Scotland ever get independence please can we join you.

SparklySneakers · 09/03/2019 23:19

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld what makes you think this:
"More your inability to understand another person's experiences or different choices to you."?? What have I said to make you think I don't understand another person's experiences or different choices? You don't know anything about my experiences or choices so how can you know they are different?

Sanguineclamp · 09/03/2019 23:19

Transit some info for you:

re: accounting bbc fact check

The shuttle between Brussels and Strasbourg is expensive annd time consuming but the seven main institutions of the EU are located in Brussels, Strasbourg, Luxembourg and Frankfurt because it is important for these bodies to be decentralised and not remain in one city/one country.

For the same reason the 40 or more European Agencies are located in cities all across the EU (yes, even in the UK!) and are starting to be located in Eastern Europe too: see here

Re: the budget, the EU spends less than 7% on admin. the EU budget is less than the budget of Austria and is only 2% of all combined 28 member national budgets

Tr1skel1on · 09/03/2019 23:20

Crown depency in the NW

transit007 · 09/03/2019 23:21

Good idea where are my chickens except, the president and the last president of the council have both been found guilty of fraud, the case took 5 years including the appeals and whilst it was all taking place the president was allowed to stay and draw a salary. He even restood for election and was voted in! On their last appeal they lost. They were find 5K euro or go to prison for 51 and 36 months respectively. They are not allowed to stand for public office again. Last October, the past president was given the position to oversee three councils here in the Algarve.

The past president of the country was imprisoned for defrauding millions. Infact, his chauffeur was caught leaving the country with millions stuffed in the car heading for France.

Not a chance of reporting fraud, they would t be interested.

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld · 09/03/2019 23:24

Well your, you won be happy comment, was quite revealing to me. If you had any understanding or had read my posts you would see I am well aware that Brexit will not and could not be an instant fix, Sparkly.

transit007 · 09/03/2019 23:25

Never believe the BBC.

Bullocks to brexit, have you lived in the EU for long? I have lived here 10 years and I guess you don’t live in the countries along the bottom?

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld · 09/03/2019 23:26

Wemyss is/was world famous, not just in Fife... tthey made the breakfast ware with little feet as well as very elegant floral table ware.

wherearemychickens · 09/03/2019 23:26

How do you know they wouldn't be interested if you haven't tried?

So this isn't EU funds being spent in the UK that you're talking about then.

BollocksToBrexit · 09/03/2019 23:26

I've lived in the EU my entire life bar 1 year.

wherearemychickens · 09/03/2019 23:30

I thought this was an interesting blog post on planning for Brexit - bluesprints.net/2018/12/19/no-deal-ideological-insanity/

Pointing out the impossibility of planning for it basically. It's too nebulous. The law of unintended consequences would kick in.

SparklySneakers · 09/03/2019 23:30

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld I didn't actually say that. I said leave won. Shouldn't you be happy [because you said you voted leave]?

Being that bitter and angry is only going to eat you up inside and being nasty to other posters isn't going to make anything positive happen. It just makes you look like a twit.

transit007 · 09/03/2019 23:32

BTB, you could always take citizenship of the country you live in. Unfortunately you could t vote as you have lived outside the UK too long. 15 years being the limit.

transit007 · 09/03/2019 23:35

Where are my chickens
No it isn’t EU funds being spent in the UK, it’s EU funds to which the UK taxpayer amongst other countries contribute being spent in Portugal. The UK are a main contributor to EU coffers.

BollocksToBrexit · 09/03/2019 23:37

I've only lived outside the UK for 12 years and I'm not eligible for citizenship here. My voting papers arrived the day after the referendum.

wherearemychickens · 09/03/2019 23:38

I take it you live in Portugal then? How are you preparing for the possibility of no-deal? I think a lot of people are worried about the health insurance implications?

BollocksToBrexit · 09/03/2019 23:41

I think a lot of people are worried about the health insurance implications?

I am. With my pre existing disabilities I'd never be able to afford private medical insurance. I also have 2 disabled children. The joys of brexit.

SparklySneakers · 09/03/2019 23:42

I think it was Carlton Ware that did the things with feet. They were in Stoke.
