Brexit - what is the point?

Bearbehind · 09/03/2019 18:32

Theresa May is blatantly running down the clock in an attempt to force her Withdrawal Agreement through.

An agreeement which is the worst of all world because we are still tied to EU regulations with no seat at the table but it’s worse that our current deal.

If her deal is voted down then the next step is a vote to take ‘no deal’ off the table, which will almost certainly pass.

So what is the actual point at this stage?

What are people hoping will happen?

(MN - please do not banish this to the Brexit Corner - this is the biggest thing to affect the UK in a generation and it’s happening in the next 3 weeks)

"people like me, who have felt forgotten about for decades to have their say and speak up."
Teenager angst bullshit. That stuff you are talking about happened to me too. I was a grown up in the 80s. And yet I don't think committing economic suicide is the answer.

JockTamsonsBairns · 09/03/2019 21:31

@justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld I'm a staunch remainer (living "up North") and agree with every word you said.

Random18 · 09/03/2019 21:32

Exactly - how many of us are from the South.
I come from a place that felt the full force of Thatcher.
Thats one of the reasons I believe in the EU so much

Bearbehind · 09/03/2019 21:32

Your option was to vote on something that was actually the cause of the problem.

Not to make a protest vote on a subject that will only make things worse and which winds up shooting you in the foot.

I was agreeing wit Bellini btw

Patroclus · 09/03/2019 21:34

As Stewart Lee said, supposed Brexiter protests voters have complained about the service in a hotel by shitting in the bed they then have to sleep in.

When was that vote offered Bare.

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld · 09/03/2019 21:36

Do you want a paper hat, Random? Hmm

bellinisurge · 09/03/2019 21:36

How dare you think that northern people who suffered under Thatcher all think that this is the answer. I'm old enough to have experienced the full effect of Thatcher as an adult.

Bearbehind · 09/03/2019 21:37

And how do you think leaving the EU is really going to help just?

Are you anywhere near Sunderland?

What do you think will happen to life around there when Nissan moves out?

And be under no illusions that it won’t move.

They need frictionless access to the EU so, whilst it won’t happen over night, they will go.

OP posts:
BollocksToBrexit · 09/03/2019 21:40

I'm from a northern city hated and decimated by Thatcher. I'm very proud that my city voted to remain. We're too smart to be duped into handing the tories more power.

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld · 09/03/2019 21:41

Pot banks in Sunderland? FFS. Angry No I'm not near Sunderland. I told you, I think successive governments have used the idea of the EU to say 'funding is there via the EU, all you need do is. apply' rather than admitting to what they have done to areas like mine.

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld · 09/03/2019 21:41

Bully for you Bollocks!

IceRebel · 09/03/2019 21:42

rather than admitting to what they have done to areas like mine.

What have they negatively done to the area you live?

Bearbehind · 09/03/2019 21:43

Your mother worked in a pot bank, doesn’t mean you live near there now.

Again, I ask you, ‘ how do you think leaving is going to help’ just?

Where did I say I spoke for all Northern people? People like me does not mean all Northerns, Bellini. So what you were an adult, the deprivation I suffered as a kid/ teen mainly in terms of education, have effected my adult life.

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld · 09/03/2019 21:45

I do live there now. I can't afford to move fucking house, never mind city! Jesus wept.

bellinisurge · 09/03/2019 21:45

How did the E.U. screw you over? Or was it just about sticking it to Cameron. He wanted you to vote Remain so you didn't? Ridiculous.

jasjas1973 · 09/03/2019 21:48

random18 why it is the uk govt fault? The EU had a chance when David Cameron asked for concessions. They said piss off, so here we are

Not true, DC got 4 of the 5 demands he asked for, his mistake was being sooooooo timid.

As to the PP who we couldn't even deport Hamza, true but it was the ECHR that blocked that until the US gave the assurances he wouldn't be killed.
The ECHR is nothing to do with the EU, we'll still be signatories.

Lidico says we had to leave because we are not in eurozone ??? jeez, 8 other countries are not in the eurozone

At the end of the day the govt 's number one priority should be the wellbeing of UK, instead we've a lunatic in charge, surrounded by career politicians, whose sole purpose is the unity of the party and staying in power.
If May weren't reliant on the DUP, the eu proposed changes to the backstop would met full govt support.

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld · 09/03/2019 21:49

The government will not have it to hide behind anymore. Let's see Ice, shutting the pits, not protecting the pottery industry, steel factory closures, tyres, massive lack of investment. Parking generations on benefits to pull unemployment numbers down, then when that sttrategy got too expensive, demonising them as lazy scum.

Tbh, I don't know why I keep justifying myself. I used MY VOTE how I chose and thought best for me and my family, just as you did.

Bearbehind · 09/03/2019 21:50

just you are going to great lengths to avoid my question here.

What is the point of this?

How do you think leaving the EU is going to make your life better?

OP posts:
Random18 · 09/03/2019 21:52

@just that was 100% your right.

You are going to be poorer. A lot poorer

Bare I have answered you, you just don't like my answer. I am not going to great lengths to avoid anything.
