I was using my hair straighteners today, and realised that it's been 15 years since I purchased them. They are GHDs and I bought them in 2004. Used almost daily and they were £100. At the time I thought this was quite expensive. But working out cost per usage it's pretty amazing! They're still going strong.

What was the best money you ever spent on something and why?

I asked a friend, and she said it was the registration fee on a dating site, as she is now married with 2 children Smile

Mattress suspenders (not sure if that’s the correct name) stops my bed sheet slipping off every night. Best £5 I’ve spent.

Hard to pick between a few fantastic things:

Air conditioning in my bedroom / home office.

Packing service from the removals guys when we last moved house.

A few baby things that we bought second hand have proven worth ten times the price: jumperoo, electric baby swing, Perfect Prep machine.

Other than the obvious stuff like ‘house’, it has to be my sonicare toothbrush. It made a huge difference to how clean and fresh my teeth look and feel and I have fewer issues at the dentist. I bought my first one about 10yrs ago, i’m on my second now. They are expensive but worth every penny IMO.

My hairdryer
It was about £60 but 15 ish years ago and still as good as new
I bought a pair of jeans for £30 and they lasted 2 years of being worn about every 3rd day
My maternity bra is on its third round of 9 months of almost daily wear too, and was £25 new

I had no idea these existed! I have an extra deep mattress and struggle to find sheets that fit and don't slip. These could change my life! Going on Amazon to order now thanks Grin

The £97,500 it cost me to divorce my ex (I owned a house for years before we married, and had to give him almost half the equity).

It skinted me for years, but was worth every penny.

Getting rid of my ex was the best money I ever spent

Bugsymalonemumof2 · 09/03/2019 18:58

TanquerayTickles · 09/03/2019 19:09

For me it wasn't a useful thing but Paralympic tickets for my entire family in 2012, we had the the most fun day ever and saw Irish and British wins. We all still talk about it all the time and if I could ever relive a day again it would be that one. Partners, kids, Grandparents, it was the best day ever and was utterly amazing.

Plastic ice cubes- I’m prone to nose bleeds and ice cubes work well to help stop the bleeding, but real ones get very messy as they melt.

Paying for Johansen Therapy to cute my DDs auditory processing problem that was causing her to be hearing impaired and her speech unintelligible £600 at the point where NHS were saying her hearing was fine and she just didn't wanting to co-operate with the test HmmHmmHmm she was 2 and 3 at the time and couldn't hear properly Angry

My mooncup! I have horribly heavy periods and I find it much more comfortable than tampons

Funnyface1 · 09/03/2019 19:26

My house. After horrible neighbours we are now detached in a beautiful house and the difference it's made to our quality of life is unbelievable. It's a very happy home, worth every penny.

Huntawaymama · 09/03/2019 19:48

Paying packers as well as removals when we moved house.

WhatNow40 · 09/03/2019 19:59

Just ordered sheet suspenders too!

Mine has to be £100 arrangement fee when I bought my first flat at 26. 100% mortgage so literally only had to pay £100 up front. Paid interest only for 3 years. Sold it for £80k more than I paid and used the equity to buy our first family home.

whitehalleve · 09/03/2019 20:01

TwoleftUggs · 09/03/2019 20:38

My Kerry Darlington original. It hangs in my hallway and makes me feel happy every single time I walk past it.

RandomMess · 09/03/2019 20:42

Also investing my student loan into buying a property in the SE 20+ years ago - never wasn't enough to repay the loan either!

Bumper1969 · 09/03/2019 20:45

Education which enabled me to buy a property in Mind din with help from a Labour first time buyer teacher's scheme. I was broke for 12 years, lived on 80 pounds after outgoings. But sold it and moved to Ireland. Now mortgage free in a beautiful home. Property all the way

SweetheartNeckline · 09/03/2019 20:51
