I was using my hair straighteners today, and realised that it's been 15 years since I purchased them. They are GHDs and I bought them in 2004. Used almost daily and they were £100. At the time I thought this was quite expensive. But working out cost per usage it's pretty amazing! They're still going strong.

What was the best money you ever spent on something and why?

I asked a friend, and she said it was the registration fee on a dating site, as she is now married with 2 children Smile

A couple of things.

  1. My xbox which has allowed me to escape.
  2. Paying for private therapy. Being allowed a judgemental free space where I can express how I am feeling at the speed I am comfortable with.

A blood test that showed my coeliac disease, was living abroad at the time, literally changed my life.

£3k (yes, I know) for the deposit on my first flat when I was 25, 19 years ago. I got the money when I was made redundant. 3 years on I needed to raise £8k to pay for alcoholism rehab; I remortgaged as flat had doubled in value. that was the best money I ever spent, 6 weeks in there and I've never drunk alcohol again, it's almost 16 years. gave me my life back. and then, the value of that little flat enabled my then husband and I to get a house, and when we split up, my share enabled me to get a flat for me and my children. to think at the time people thought I should spend the redundancy on a holiday... it's done so so much.

A piece of original art I bought with an unexpected windfall. Brings me joy every day when I look at it.

About £700 on a carpenter building a full-height cupboard in the kids' room in our first place together - we had extended the second bedroom, but it was still quite small for two kids sharing. The cupboard really allowed the room to work as a two-kid bedroom, which was especially valuable as we we ended up in that flat about 3 years longer than expected (we were ready to move, but then I was made redundant, and then just when we were ready again, DH lost his job!), so we got a lot of worth out of that cupboard.

Bodum travel mug that is also a cafetiere. Makes a perfect coffee for one and stays hot for hours. Its ingenious. The plunger has a rubber seal so that when it is depressed the coffee does not become e stewed. Took it with me when I walked the Inca trail last year. Everyone on my trek was drinking crappy instant coffee. But not me
Best 25 quid I ever spent

Our trampoline doesn't owe us a penny. Three kids and dozens of their friends have used it for years.

My wonderful dog who has been my non-judgemental and ever comforting rock through ptsd, depression and anxiety -I genuinely doubt I would have recovered without her. Dogs are the most amazing creatures to walk the Earth.

Perfect Prep machine. It saved my sanity at a low low time.

My babyliss hairdryer turned out to be a good buy, felt bit sad when it broke after 22yrs service. I figured i saved so much on the old one, I replaced it with a Parlux which is so pretty, light & makes my hair look great with minimum effort.

BringmeGin · 09/03/2019 18:32

My teasmade, hot tea waiting for me when I wake up enables me to have a nice cuppa and breakfast bar in bed every day before before I get up and start catering for everyone else! A simple but effective way to put myself first and has changed how I feel about mornings!

And the flu jab I paid for this year for the first time. Have only had one cold all year so it was worth every penny! Especially at Christmas when everyone around me was ill and I didn't get it!

Good thread!

I paid for a session with a really good personal shopper - not one attached to any shop or brand. I felt so blurgh after baby number two and now I am so stylish and well turned out.

A basic rice cooker from Argos donkeys years ago. Makes perfect rice every time and cost about £14.

We have 2 paintings , the first one is 10 years old and second is very recent , of our children , both painted by a Cornish artist ( acrylics on canvas ) whose work we originally saw in a holiday cottage we rented in Cornwall after a pretty difficult year !
They cost roughly £100 each and the first one which hung above the fireplace in the lounge for many years has been commented on by loads of visitors including our kids friends .
Reckon it’s the only thing our children will fight over when we die !
Second painting is equally fab but will need time to catch the love of the first , both very personal to us , not standard / obvious perspectives but taken from holiday snaps with memories
