To ask what the best money you ever spent was?

I was using my hair straighteners today, and realised that it's been 15 years since I purchased them. They are GHDs and I bought them in 2004. Used almost daily and they were £100. At the time I thought this was quite expensive. But working out cost per usage it's pretty amazing! They're still going strong.

What was the best money you ever spent on something and why?

I asked a friend, and she said it was the registration fee on a dating site, as she is now married with 2 children Smile

  2. Tempur mattress
  3. Electric blanket
  4. A few charity shop/sale bargains that I’ve worn to death

Boob job!

Two things really. Firstly I paid £50 privately for a numbing injection at a dentist when I was heavily pregnant and had a tooth dying. The instant relief was incredible.

Secondly, hypnosis to help a sickness phobia when I was almost due to give birth to my first child. Incredibly freeing and life changing. I didn’t realise just how far the reaches of it had spread into my life until it was pretty much cured. Cost £160 I think.

£3, 600 deposit on my first flat, a loong, loong time ago.....really struggled to save it and then pay the mortgage alone at 21....but it allowed me to start my first business from there with no overheads....
Then when l sold it 8 yrs later to move to London it was the ( rather small) deposit on my first London flat which doubled in a year.
Now have the freedom to live anywhere in the UK.

My iPad - I can find anything out, virtually visit places, keep in touch shop, read, watch tv, listen to music and talk to my grandchildren via Skype.
My trans Siberian trip, which also involved a total solar eclipse.
Driving lessons and car - freedom!
A set of good knives and a magnetic strip
My wood burner -makes such a difference to the whole house
My dehumidifier - ditto.

Laser hair removal on my legs. No shaving, no regrowth whilst waiting for waxing, no ingrown hairs. Fabulous!

CarolDanvers · 11/03/2019 23:45

My dogs. The happiness they bring me cannot be described. Both breed dogs and my second one especially cost a lot of money but they're worth every penny.

A flat I bought on a 100% mortgage when I was a postgrad in a town where property was cheap. I only bought it because it was cheaper than renting and my parents had to act as guarantors. 20 years later it has tripled in value and is enabling me to buy my ex out of the family home.

Easilyflattered; how bad were your eyes before? I'm so short-sighted I can't even see the letter A at the top of the chart without my glasses, but I've heard horror stories about it making eyesight worse.

A Megasketcher. Cost £10 and ds had years and years of fun with it. And it actually cost nothing as we had a £10 gift voucher!

Numptysod · 12/03/2019 12:21

I wish I could have laser eye surgery

My robotic lawn mower. Set it going then go do something else or go out and come back to a lovely mown lawn.
I want to lick the inventors left ear hole with gratitude.

puppymouse · 12/03/2019 12:56

My horse. I mention him over my dog because he costs me hundreds of pounds every month DH loathes him. But I cannot even begin to describe the joy of having him in my life. I can be in pain and stressed or miserable, I go and see him and I come back a different person. I have wanted a horse since I was 3.

He's been through injury after injury and this time last year the vet agreed he should probably be retired. But I made some radical decisions and he's back in work and doing better than ever. Building a bond with any animal is magical in my view.

Dinner at Le Gavroche
A premier dining trip in the Pullman car, pulled by a steam train (supposed to be an A4 Pacific but it needed repairs the week before)
Safari in Zambia and then the Rift Valley and the Ngorongoro crater - seeing elephants, leopards, cheetahs, etc close up!

thumper59 · 12/03/2019 13:24

Mine too is probably my dog! Was away with the horses and was for sale in a little cage, managed to get him for 100 quid- best 100 quid ever spent! He's my absolute best mate and my life would be so incomplete without him. He's a little Mongrel with odd ears and sticky out paws but he's the most perfect thing I've ever seen 💕

Wheretheresawill1 · 12/03/2019 14:38

My siamese cat who is 14 this year. Each time I hear her raspy siamese voice she makes me smile

janineaspinall · 12/03/2019 15:14

My wireless headphones! Not a lot of money, but I do love them and wish I had bought them years ago. No more faffing with wires when putting scarf on/off when commuting, picking up dog poo without dog getting tangled in wire........ small things but amazing!

Subeccoo · 12/03/2019 15:20

My fridge and dishwasher were cheap as chips when I got them, both coming up to 20 years old.

My Henry Hoover is over 10 years old and was a happy divorce present to me which was a lot of money but I'm so glad I bought it.

140 on hypnotherapy last year to give up smoking. Best thing I've ever done.

cheesenpickles · 12/03/2019 15:23

Getting a cleaner. We don't earn shitloads and I work from home but the state of the house has a huge knock on effect with my mood, mental health and my relationship.

Dh was SO anti and took years to come around but really appreciates it now.

I'd forgo holidays to have a cleaner.

BikeRunSki · 12/03/2019 15:42

Cranial osteopathy. Coincidence, science or biased thinking, but DD started sleeping fit more than 2 hours in a row with cranial osteopathy. She was 3 and at that point I thought I was actually going insane and would have tried anything.

I'm a penny pinching sod and won't spend if I can rob, lift or "borrow"

Best cash purchases probably the bog standard cheap, own brand digital piano which was for my daughter's 13th and intended for her to practise and play in private with headphones.

It cost £400 and played, felt and sounded as immense as a concert grand. Wipes the floor with other brand digital pianos. Pedal board was severely flood damaged though and we can't get a full replacement but I've just bought a simple sustain pedal and plugged that in. Works perfectly.

A 20yr old Toyota Starlet for £200

Door mat for £5

Horse's stable rug made from old duvets and throws / quilts stitched together.

Dogs.

My babyliss hairdryer is 32 years old and still going strong. Recently bought super soft fleece bedsheet, duvet cover and pillow case set from Next - cost £50 and haven't slept so well - feel like I'm kipping in a cloud!!
