Grey decor

AIBU to hope this trend dies a death soon?

I'm house hunting at the moment and every other house is grey. Grey walls, grey kitchens, grey bathrooms.... bloody depressing.

Can someone please tell me it's starting to go out of fashion? It's the avocado bathroom suite for our times...

@triptrapoverthebridge

Just looked at Mrs Hinch on Instagram and agree her home looks so dreary and try hard. Don't like it.

I agree with this. I just looked ... It's awful. Sad

Each to their own, but it looks drab IMO.

OTOH some grey decor looks okayish if it has other colours splashed about.

Like this/these (sort of!)

Mrsmadevans · 09/03/2019 21:34

TBH it all looks very FB DIY on a budget

QuirkyQuark · 09/03/2019 21:52

Mrsmadevans I love that group although iv3 been muted many times for my comments 😂

Mrsmadevans · 09/03/2019 22:21

Quirky l love it too Grin

cushioncuddle · 09/03/2019 22:37

I hate grey and magnolia.
I like Calico on the walls and ceiling. I find that a great base colour to pair other colours with.

wildbhoysmama · 09/03/2019 22:47

disorganisedmum Thank goodness that's not your house, didn't want to be rude earlier. That look is so gauche! Grey CAN look great ( with other colours and the right setting). I had no idea there was this striving to look like your photos- not my idea of amazing grey.

GruciusMalfoy · 09/03/2019 22:58

I don't mind grey in small doses, but I wouldn't have my whole house done in varying shades of it. There are too many nice colours to limit yourself to shades of grey. It's a decent background for different colours.

justasking111 · 09/03/2019 23:01

Grey is being replaced by greige. Yep we used to call it beige, in our new home there is a sparkling new bathroom which is tiled floor to ceiling in this colour. I hate it. But it is too expensive to rip it all out.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 09/03/2019 23:38

Beige isn't greige though just. Beige is yucky browny colour. 'Proper' Greige is greyed beige/grey with a bit of a warm neutral hint.

TheBlackDaliah · 09/03/2019 23:39

Hmmm I just googled Mrs Hinch's house, I love it 🤔 looks calm and restful to me....
Most of my house is now grey/silver and shock horror some of it has a touch of sparkle 😁 Many people wouldn't like it, plenty would but more importantly I love it and it's taken me and my husband a long time to get it the way we want it.
So many comments on here about it being tasteless and boring (and also other nasty comments that I can't remember to quote) perhaps it would be nice to remember some people have worked damn hard to get what they want before ripping their ideas to shreds?

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 09/03/2019 23:42

@hoho did you have black ash furniture (from MFI) too? 😂

GoodGirlsGuide · 09/03/2019 23:47

squeezysparklyballs do you think this is ‘nice grey’? I think it is - we love our two-tone grey kitchen. Our bedroom is shades of grey too but with bright cerise pink accent colour Smile

TheBlackDaliah

I agree with you, my home has a lot of grey / silver throughout.. I just think it looks so clean & relaxing!

TheBlackDaliah · 09/03/2019 23:51

I just don't get why it's okay on here to mock people's decor (which let's face it, isn't cheap to replace) but people would be outraged if there was a similar thread about clothing choices....

Mustgetonwithit · 10/03/2019 00:04

Each to their own- Im just sick of my choices being limited as currently every shop you go into has a range of grey and little else! I dont want to have the same as everyone else thanks. I have my own style and taste and like to my own stamp on things. Its boring all having grey. It looks bland and characterless unless yr really good with accent colours which Im prob not and many people dont seem to be imho.

Sparklingbrook · 10/03/2019 00:06

Why do people care about what random internet strangers think of their decor choices? It's not like they are ever going to be going round and seeing it.

Just have what you like.

SomethingOnce · 10/03/2019 00:51

hoho did you have black ash furniture (from MFI) too?

And one of those black and white posters from Athena?

nokidshere · 10/03/2019 01:02

Gosh such hatred of grey lol

I got my first home in 1981, Green was in back then! Then we went all habitat for a while, then Lara Ashley chintz and stripes, not to mention a rather fetching Linda barker black & red triangle wallpaper with matching curtains 😂 all in a 200yr old cottage that lent itself to dark colours and dramatic patterns.

We've been in our new build since 1999. Started with magnolia, then greens/blues, then terracotta and lots of creams.

Now it's all white, light and spacious and it looks fab once again, especially with my new trendy gloss grey kitchen Grin

It's all been done before, and no doubt will be done again, like what you like and enjoy what you create because who cares what your house looks like if you are happy in it. Just paint and it can be changed in an instant Grin

Decormad38 · 10/03/2019 01:27

Had grey everywhere in my last house. Mainly because we knew we would be selling and buyers love it. In this house I have one grey chimney breast and that’s it. I’ve moved onto darker or richer colours hague blue, india yellow.

WhiffofSnell · 10/03/2019 03:35

Remember Changing Rooms terracotta? Preferably rag rolled Grin

Seahorseshoe · 10/03/2019 03:56

Yanbu.

PinkOboe · 10/03/2019 03:59

Every single person I know who’s decorated or had a new kitchen / bathroom recently has done it in a dark or navy blue. Looks lovely but already totally ubiquitous

Actually thinking about it all our bedrooms are various blues but that’s through accident rather than design

Oliversmumsarmy · 10/03/2019 04:15

I actually like grey.

I have a very boring house.
I hate bright colours and pastelly shades.
I have mainly white walls, wood flooring (no carpet, pictures or ornaments) and a grey kitchen, and taupe bathrooms.

steff13 · 10/03/2019 04:50

I like grey fine, but I prefer blue. We painted our bedroom a lovely blue. It's called Cincinnatian Hotel Ashley Atrium. 😹

HexagonalBattenburg · 10/03/2019 07:31

I know navy blue is taking over as the in thing - but you need to have a big light house really to pull that off... grey has got so ubiquitous as it works for so many houses which don't have lots and lots of zeros in the house price.

Grey's just the current MN sneer-fad... was twiggy shit for a while, then words as ornaments, live laugh love wall art was it for a period and now we're onto grey decor.

I'll probably do the kitchen green when I find a shade I like and kick DH's arse into gear but I like the blue-toned grey we've got in the lounge - it works well with the way the light is in our house.

I don't like plain white walls either - they show marks like buggery and again, we lived in rentals for years that were either magnolia trade or pure brilliant white trade paint and I've not quite got over my aversion for it.

I pray terracotta doesn't make a comeback - I hate earth toned pallettes as I think they're in danger of veering toward grimey nicotine stained fairly easily... but that's my tastes and taste is a very personal thing really.
