Grey decor

AIBU to hope this trend dies a death soon?

I'm house hunting at the moment and every other house is grey. Grey walls, grey kitchens, grey bathrooms.... bloody depressing.

Can someone please tell me it's starting to go out of fashion? It's the avocado bathroom suite for our times...

I don't think most people are looking down on other posters. Grey is marmite you either love or hate it. Colour has such an impact on the way you feel grey just makes me depressed. I bought Kevin McCloud's paint colour book a few years ago and it's made me more confident in choosing bolder colours. Unfortunately I'm working overseas at the moment and in rented accommodation and have magnolia walls.

Huntawaymama · 10/03/2019 08:12

Funny people have mentioned navy being the next "in" colour. We've just moved into our spare room as our room has been turned into a nursery. One wall was navy and three white with a navy blind and light shade. I painted all the walls white but the blind and shade are still there until I have a bit of money and inspiration to decorate. My husband said why don't we just go with navy but I said no as I had a feeling it was going to start being a trend. Might go for a spring green or white and raspberry

Yellow is my favourite colour but I'm going to wait until everyone else has stopped using it 😂

The thing is everything dates. Every scheme ends up every where eventually as once something is ‘in’ it obviously is in all the magazines and shops. So if you are decorating that’s what’s out there and will consciously or unconsciously influence your tastes.

I’m not keen on lots of grey as seen in Mrs Hinch’s house as I think that looks a bit too much and too cold. I prefer some colour to add interest. But we are all different.

Completely agree with you HexagonalBattenburgh - everything gets slated on here at some stage.

I haven’t ever seen white walls date.

Been doing them since the 70s

Peridot1 · 10/03/2019 10:43

Possibly the exception then. I agree white walls don’t date.

I'd say navy is over. It's been done to death on Instagram. I think the people who have had navy kitchens installed are going to be regretting it soon.

Atchiclees · 10/03/2019 11:17

We bought our last but one house really cheaply as it had changing rooms era decor. Terracotta rag rolled walls, terracotta carpet and curtains. It was like being in a womb Grin Soon got rid of it with the B&Q Maine New England colour palette. Loved this shades.

deathbycats · 10/03/2019 12:24

Yeah dark/forest green will take over from navy very soon.

EntirelyAnonymised · 10/03/2019 12:36

Navy was years ago. Forest was last year. Beige/warm caramel is next.

EntirelyAnonymised · 10/03/2019 12:38

If you really care about colour trends, that is.

I don’t particularly and of course, most of us don’t redecorate every year.

Anon10 · 10/03/2019 13:40

I love white walls. My walls are brilliant white, solid oak floors and everything in my house is scandi-minimalist with an industrial edge warmed up by the wood floors and some items made of natural materials like jute. I’m not into cutesy retro scandi at all. I like grey and have touches of grey but wouldn’t actually paint the walls grey. It’s overbearing and overdone. White is best for reflecting light and I love it’s simplicity. I use a few muted colour tones in the soft furnishings. I find bold or bright colours in a home quite overbearing and dominating. I love calm decor. I can’t bare anything sparkly, synthetic or from the likes of next.

I love this kind of look ...

Not in my house. I hate green.

I would lose the grey wall and paint it white,
I would also lose the dust gathering ornaments and shelves.

I look at houses of people my age and younger and they don’t look anything like my interior.

Mine looks akin to someone who is just starting out and can’t afford any furniture.

Living room has a tv a cabinet the tv stands on and a sofa.
Bedroom has a mattress on the floor

thecatsthecats · 10/03/2019 17:22

Magnolia isn't neutral. It's the shitstain of the devil himself.

Pinkbells · 10/03/2019 17:33

I'm totally into Pink Ground and Hague Blue at the moment. The trouble is, I'm in danger of doing the whole house like it, which is what people are doing with the grey. The blue is another colour like the grey that works well with splashes of colour around, but too much grey is such overkill (thinking doors and paintwork all grey as well as the walls!)

Slowknitter · 10/03/2019 17:36

This thread inspired me to go and get some greyish paint tester pots to choose a colour for my open plan hall stairs and landing! So far I'm liking Polished Pebble and Perfectly Taupe (Dulux).

Fluffiest · 10/03/2019 18:04

The problem with fashion trends is that they dominate the magazines, shops, advertising so much that it is easy for things to grow on you that you don't actually like.

I know that I like dark wood, deep jewel colours and white as a neutral colour with gold metalics here and there. I always like this look, a bit old fashioned but I like old things.

But even knowing what I like, there have been times when the shabby chic white heart stuff began to look appealing just because they were everywhere.

I've found myself trying on millennial pink clothes even though I know the colour doesn't suit.

I get that fashion trends come and go. I just wish that we could have more variety in trends happening at once.

justasking111 · 10/03/2019 19:16

A carpet manufacturer with 40 odd years experience told me years ago that white walls set off your furnishings better than any other colour. Your furnishings should tell the story he said. I think the fashion of whites with a hint of something became popular in the 80`s for those who did not like white.

However I have seen some stunning colour schemes where houses had boldly coloured walls with architraves, dados and skirtings in white.

I think the size of the room can dictate your colour scheme as well. If you have a house of small rooms perhaps neutral light colours work better.

DontCallMeShitley · 10/03/2019 22:49

I don't like magnolia but I absolutely loathe grey. Didn't mind it at first but it is everywhere now, inside and out, it is a very depressing non-colour.

And dark red dining rooms.

And houses with no interior walls, just one big room.

So many people with no imagination, copying everyone else that has already copied others.....individual style is good.

DontCallMeShitley · 10/03/2019 22:53

Slowknitter, Polished Pebble looks a lot darker that you expect it to. I was given some paint and it had obviously failed to suit, I tried it out but it failed here too. Very 'meh' and dingy. Am going to use it inside the shed to save wasting it.

mogtheexcellent · 10/03/2019 22:57

we have grey tiles in the bathroom but thats the only grey in the house (apart from the rug in the living room).

Im wondering when the sage green pvc window frames are going to go out of fashion. So many houses near me are going to look very dated.

PriscillaLydiaSellon · 10/03/2019 22:57

"Pops of colour". FML.

There is nothing grey in my house. I hate it. Many shades of Farrow off-white things, but they are more in the 'cream' spectrum than the dreary greys.

Ihavealwaysknown · 10/03/2019 23:04

Our house is slowly moving from magnolia to grey 🙈

Dc1 was unknown gender so we went with a grey dumbo room

Kitchen has just gone grey

Our other favourite colour appears to be duck egg as it’s in the living room and downstairs loo.

Dark green window frames! Haven't seen those, a few dark grey ones on the plain battleship grey houses that make me think of prisons, except they have front doors like offices or spas rather than homes. Most people are still using white ones round here, even replacing the 80's brown ones with brilliant white.

I know fashions change but sometimes they go on for too long.
