Grey decor

AIBU to hope this trend dies a death soon?

I'm house hunting at the moment and every other house is grey. Grey walls, grey kitchens, grey bathrooms.... bloody depressing.

Can someone please tell me it's starting to go out of fashion? It's the avocado bathroom suite for our times...

Oh dear, I have no opinion on the colour grey, if you like it, you like it.

But I am fed up of shops just having varied shades of grey and not much else.

My decorator is painting my bedroom now, pale ivory and what turn out to be a lighter shade of beetroot! I love it (its a huge room), I dont care if no one else likes it I do.

JazzerMcJazzer · 11/03/2019 14:54

The decorator arrived this morning to start painting our hall and landings two shades of grey!

We also got a dark blue kitchen last summer. I absolutely love it and won’t be regretting it any time soon, I can assure you. We have a brightly tiled floor and no wall cabinets, just one tall larder so it’s not overbearing.

The hall about to be painted is currently a combo of light and dark sickly cream/magnolia type colours which I used to find inoffensive (previous owners did it) but now hate. There will be zero pops of colour in my new hallway, by the way, and no crushed velvet or mirrored furniture will ever cross my threshold. All woodwork, including bannisters, dado and picture rails and ceilings will be bright white though.

Grey decor

I don't really mind what other people put in their homes...until it affects me! Was shopping this weekend for the first time in years as a few things need updating and there was so much grey. Finally found the perfect upholstered bed (cost-wise) for spare room, only in grey. The drawer attachment for one of my son's desks, only in yellow/grey combo. Tried to buy an extra chair to match a couple of we have...now only available in grey.

Came home feeling grey.

ginghamtablecloths · 11/03/2019 17:20

Years ago it was magnolia and beige - colours I can still live with. Be assured in a few years the fashion will change again,

7Days · 11/03/2019 17:52

There's pale cool neutrals - grey.
Pale warm neutrals, beige, magnolia, etc.
Then jewel tones, earthy or pastel.

And mn hates all those but I can't think of any other type colour to paint my walls.

labazsisgoingmad · 11/03/2019 19:28

grey decorated walls reminds me of hospitals institutes etc

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/03/2019 19:32

Must say I've never understood this trend - not in the UK, where on so many days of the year you only have to look out of the window.

IMO it's a fashion that will die the death, like any other. But at least it's more cheaply and easily changed (unless it's a kitchen) than avocado bathrooms or decking.

Ideatcakeforbreakfast · 11/03/2019 20:03

My little boys room was decorated grey before he was born as it was neutral and it looked lovely with white furniture and colourful pictures. As others have said, it's definitely nicer than beige /magnolia!

brizzlemint · 11/03/2019 20:04

We have a grey and black bathroom, it's lovely. Plenty of pops of colour too - green plants, brightly coloured towels and candles.

givemesteel · 11/03/2019 20:19

Yes we bought 18 mo ago and inherited some grey walls, it was an older couple who 'did it up to sell' so probably just looked at some home fashion magazines to work out what would sell.

It's OK, at least it's neutral, I'm not sure I even noticed it until we'd moved in.

Apparently brown is the new grey for those that care.

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 11/03/2019 20:26

I'm the opposite, I love grey!

My living room is grey & cream with black soft furnishings and a charcoal carpet. Dining room is white with silver & grey butterflies, charcoal carpet. Kitchen is being decorated teal with grey units (painted) my bedroom is teal and navy blue and my sons room is bright grass green.

Francheska11 · 11/03/2019 20:41

We renovated our home a year and a half ago when the grey theme was the all in. I have since decided that after all the hard work the grey wasn't doing it for me as much as I thought, my house needed some real colour to make it feel like a home instead of a show home. I now have a burgundy front room, pink kids rooms, rose pink playroom, warm blue bathroom and a light blue bedroom. It makes my rooms feel so much warmer, people have their houses looking beautiful on Instagram, but reality is when I look at my home with two young children, two working parents and the manicness that life brings my house is no insta home no matter how hard I try, so why not make it fit my real family life Wink

wetpants · 11/03/2019 20:48

Jazzer I love your kitchen!

I have a blue and white kitchen, brand new. I really don't care if it's on trend or not, I have always loved blue in it's all shades, well before navy became fashionable.

I also like grey and depending on shade and the aspect, it can be a warm neutral. A right shade of grey makes a beautiful backdrop for artwork, soft furnishing etc. I don't have a single grey wall in my house but I do have a feature wall in our master bedroom. It's a statement wallpaper and I love it.

Does it really matter if something dates or is out of fashion as long as you like it? I'm on Instagram but don't follow interiors much. I'm aware of the colour of the year by Dulux, Pantone etc due to my work but don't really have the foggiest if navy has already been done to death. If you like navy, who cares.

Atthebottomofthegarden · 11/03/2019 22:32

We’ve just redone our kitchen with light grey cabinets, with teal walls - I really like it. 😁

And the lounge in pale grey. Never painted a room grey before, I was nervous it was going to look very cold but it really doesn’t. Pinky red sofas and curtains will stop it being too bland I think.

Betty777 · 11/03/2019 22:33

we have ended up with a fair amount of grey in the sitting room. but the house is saved from dull-ness by the vast amount of 90s pine in the kitchen

jacksonmaine · 11/03/2019 22:53

@Oliversmummyarmy
actually like grey.

I have a very boring house.
I hate bright colours and pastelly shades.
I have mainly white walls, wood flooring (no carpet, pictures or ornaments) and a grey kitchen, and taupe bathrooms.

Everytime I read your posts I think I have written it. We have exactly the same taste and my house is identical! Grin

My rooms are bare with no pictures, ornaments and minimal furniture. I hate most stuff and artwork seems to fall into that category too!

NameChanger22 · 11/03/2019 22:56

I hate the grey trend, it's depressing and dull. I'm trying to buy new sofas right now and everywhere I look they're grey. I just want a cream or pale pink sofas. Our house is nearly all white with a few pastel shades.

wildbhoysmama · 11/03/2019 23:12

JAZZER I too think your kitchen is divine. I'd love it.

Surprisedmom · 11/03/2019 23:32

I too hate the grey trend and am going house hunting later this year and dreading having to pay extra for newly renovated homes done up in grey that I will want to pull out or paint over.
Worse still though, imo, is all the grey baby clothes. It’s just so depressing to have a baby dressed so drably.

JazzerMcJazzer · 11/03/2019 23:56

Thanks wetpants and wildbhoysmama Grin

yumyumpoppycat · 12/03/2019 00:25

Jazzer your kitchen is beautiful.

jacksonmaine · 12/03/2019 07:06

Yes it is a beautiful kitchen.

I don't think kitchens will change anytime soon. The manufacturers take a long time to change the mold/design.

Charliescar · 12/03/2019 08:06

Mrs Hinchs house is vile - god only knows how she has so many followers . It looks like she has been to the Range and Dunelm bought everything for her home there !!
I have a grey in my house but it accessorised with colour and wood etc !

HarrySnotter · 12/03/2019 08:09

I don't mind it too much, it's a neutral to me, so like every other neutral shade, you can accessorise and change things around it. I'm a green person though.

IDismyname · 12/03/2019 08:12

Grey is on its way out
