Dog poo etiquette

HelenLaBloodyAnnoyed · 05/03/2019 21:53

When walking my dog, he usually poos within the first ten mins. I obviously pick it up but I then leave the bag hanging on a fence or a tree to collect on the way back. I do this because DD has autism and the smell and sight of the poo would bother her the entire time, she'd be gagging or even sick. Tonight a fellow dog walker criticised me for it, saying it spoils the view Hmm There are no bins on this particular walk (which takes around an hour and a half) so it's necessary to take it home. Is it unreasonable to collect it on the way back?

OP: AIBU?

Everyone: YABU

OP: But but but

Everyone: YABVU. Here are 472837483 ways to NBU.

OP: No sorry I will keep doing it.

It's disgusting. Other people have no way of knowing whether you're coming back to pick it up, but they do know that it spoils their walk.

Please get a Dicky Bag!

DerbyRacer · 06/03/2019 13:12

What about other people who feel sick when they see a bag of poo hanging? I have autism and it really makes me feel horrible seeing poo bags hanging. When I am walking with my mum and her dog, my mum double bags the poo and carries it so it is on the other side of where I am.

HotChocolateLover · 06/03/2019 13:13

Not good OP. You need to take it with you, not leave it there for someone else to pick up because they see it and are exasperated at it.

Confusedbeetle · 06/03/2019 13:15

The woods near me have trees festooned for years and carefully laid bags by the path. If you ask someone are they collecting it on the way back its always oh yes. The bags are the compostable ones. There is one bag that has been there at eye height for 2 years. I would so prefer they stick and flick in the countryside. The bags are worse than the shit

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 06/03/2019 13:23

You'll get roasted here but I do the same. Bag it and leave it hidden in the bushes then pick it up on the way back. If people dont like it they can always lobby for more poo bins in that area.

HelenLaBloodyAnnoyed · 06/03/2019 13:49

It's a quiet walk - we rarely see anyone else which is why I didn't see it as a big issue. But I'll invest in a dicky bag and see how DD gets on.

"It's a quiet walk - we rarely see anyone else which is why I didn't see it as a big issue. But I'll invest in a dicky bag and see how DD gets on."

YEAH! Citizenship award to you OP. Let us know when you've bought it.

GhostsToMonsoon · 06/03/2019 13:57

Well done for deciding to try a Dicky Bag OP. They are great.

thesnapandfartisinfallible Why should I have to spend my free time lobbying for more bins because irresponsible and lazy dog owners don't want to carry their dog's poo around? Your dog's poo = your responsibility, just as if you eat a bag of crisps on your walk, you don't drop the packet on the ground. Bins aren't always feasible in rural or remote areas, and councils don't have a lot of spare cash floating around to fund them.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 06/03/2019 13:58

Please stop dropping litter, it's incredibly antisocial and destructive.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 06/03/2019 14:00

Hi confused,

"Please don't drop litter" is probably better than "are you picking it up"

because all litter is temporary. the fact that someone is (sometimes) picking up (some) of their plastic litter later (if they can be bothered) is beside the point.

outpinked · 06/03/2019 14:02

Walk somewhere else where there’s bins, problem solved.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/03/2019 14:02

Good grief, @ComeMonday - the OP came back last night and said a dicky bag sounded like a good idea - which implies that she has accepted she was being unreasonable - so your post is a bit unpleasant and unnecessary.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 06/03/2019 14:04

Flowers to all dog owners who pick up after their dog

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 06/03/2019 14:08

Why should they?? It's your choice to have a dog! Just take the bag home with you, or if you'd rather not then why don't you lobby for more bins? If you're not prepared to do either then don't have a dog!

Pk37 · 06/03/2019 14:09

Yabu, put the poo bag in another bag and then she won’t see/smell it.
It’s rank to leave them laying about , doesn’t matter if you come back for it

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 06/03/2019 14:16

I don’t advocate anyone leaving their dog poo bags to pick up later on the walk but I think in this instance where a the DD has autism and is hugely affected by the smell and b that it’s very quiet AND the op picks it up on her way home, I think I would forgive her! Anyway it’s good to see that she’s going to try the dickie bag. Hope it works out ok OP.

tessieandoz · 06/03/2019 14:20

Dog owner here. Absolutely completely unacceptable. Your dog ergo your poo. That contributes to give all dog walker/ owners a bad name. Do as suggested and double bag it. At times I just take it home if no bin available.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/03/2019 14:27

She IS going to try a dickie bag, @tessieandoz!

It would be nice if people read the thread and saw that the OP has said she IS going to try a different solution than leaving the poo bag and coming back for it.

Hoppinggreen · 06/03/2019 14:35

If I’m doimg a circular route and Ddog poos near the beginning I bag it and put it somewhere unobtrusive until we come back round.
Often if it’s a long walk I have a backpack with a special compartment we put the (bagged) poo in until we find a bin
Would t dream of hanging it on a tree, gross

MaMisled · 06/03/2019 14:37

On Amazon, there are Dicky / Dickie Dog Waste bags. Smell proof and washable bags designed to hide away full pooh bags. Waste clip, handy pockets for phone, clean pooh bags, keys etc.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 06/03/2019 14:38

Hopping, that is not ok. Your idea of unobtrusive may not be the wildlife's idea of unobtrusive and you are spoiling the countryside for other people.

Please stop dropping litter and start picking up after your dog.

Mia1415 · 06/03/2019 14:49

I'm a dog owner and I think YABVU. It is disgusting.

You can either
-alter the beginning of your walk so there is a bin near

  • triple bag it in scented bags or put it in box or other container.

It's really not acceptable to do what you are currently doing.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 06/03/2019 15:39

Oh come on people, you’re reacting like the OP is leaving it on a busy footpath for children to step in. It’s in a bag, hung up.
Not ideal but the OP had said she’s going to try the dickie bag.

Give the woman a break.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/03/2019 15:43

@MaMisled - the dickie bags were suggested yesterday, and the OP is going to try them.

It would be so nice if people read the OP’s updates and saw that she has said she will look at the dickie bags, and hasntherefore apparently accepts that what she was doing is unreasonable.
