Dog poo etiquette

HelenLaBloodyAnnoyed · 05/03/2019 21:53

When walking my dog, he usually poos within the first ten mins. I obviously pick it up but I then leave the bag hanging on a fence or a tree to collect on the way back. I do this because DD has autism and the smell and sight of the poo would bother her the entire time, she'd be gagging or even sick. Tonight a fellow dog walker criticised me for it, saying it spoils the view Hmm There are no bins on this particular walk (which takes around an hour and a half) so it's necessary to take it home. Is it unreasonable to collect it on the way back?

Take a mini rucksack, double bag it and put it in there?

BridlingtonSand · 06/03/2019 06:07

If OP doesn’t already understand that this is disgusting she’s not going to be convinced by replies here.

BridlingtonSand · 06/03/2019 06:08

Around here the national forestry advises dog owners to “stick & flick”.

echt · 06/03/2019 06:38

YABU. People passing by don't know it's temporary thing, it just brings the place down, and encourages others to do the same, perhaps as a permanent fixture.

Double and triple bag, put it in a back pack to keep it from your DD.

Pick up your shit.

I do this. But I’m walking in fields, not a residential area, does that make a difference? There isn’t going to be a bin and other ppl aren’t going to be bothered by it. I’ve never once forgotten to collect the bag on the way back.

I think everyone is confusing you with the people who leave their bags of poo there forever which is worse than not bagging it.

howwillwedeal · 06/03/2019 06:55

No need for it, double bag it, put it in rucksack or change your walk direction, you're lucky to be able to gauge when your dog will poo.

howwillwedeal · 06/03/2019 06:58

Also, it you're picking it up on the way back and walking with it for 10 minutes then, how does DD handle that?

motherheroic · 06/03/2019 07:02

The thing is most dogs are on crap diets so their poop absolutely reeks. Also the bags are also unsightly and almost always forgotten.

Heyha · 06/03/2019 07:07

Stick and flick isn't so bad in woodland but please please don't do it on grassland. The poo bags being chucked into the horses is also awful (although as someone with several of them it still amazes me that the horses ate any tbh).
Take it away at the time or go back for it but please don't leave poos on or near grazing land thinking that's better than a temporary hide/hang up of the bag. It really isn't.

kiabella · 06/03/2019 07:11

I had no idea that was why I see tree baubles when I walk the dog....it's disgusting really. Take the dog somewhere with a bin or encourage them to do their business in the garden before you go on the walk

sleepyhead · 06/03/2019 08:03

Presumably everyone who hung up a poo bag was definitely going to come back for it, otherwise they'd not have bothered to pick it up.

Reality is that lots of people forget. The evidence hangs for trees, fences and "discreetly" at the edge of paths and behind trees. Far easier not to do it in the first place. You're far less likely to forget to bin it if it'll be your house it's stinking out.

Namechangeymcnamechange11 · 06/03/2019 08:04

It's disgusting. Bag it up and if your daughter is that bothered, box it up too.
Be a responsible dog owner. No one else wants your poo baubles.

Maybe you'll get a fixed penalty for it and learn your lesson with a hit on your pocket.

berrybubbles · 06/03/2019 08:06

There’s been a bag full of dog shit hanging near my house for over a year now as my council are awful at taking care of the town. Can’t imagine what diseases and parasites are living in there🤢

SoupDragon · 06/03/2019 08:10

I think it's disgusting too. I have a dicky bag, as linked to up thread. Double bagged and put in slime thing like that is the way to go. Leaving the bag hanging on a hedge/fence/whatever is rank.

Spicylolly · 06/03/2019 08:16

I'm a dog walker and I can see your reasoning but to people who don't know if just looks like you've left it there. But one of those lanyard poo bins linked in above, I have one and even filled to the brim with stinky poo you can't smell it 👍
Saves anyone having a go at you x

IceBearRocks · 06/03/2019 08:20

My severaly autistic son has just been told he needs to wear glasses.....he wasn't wearing them!!!! He is now!!! Same with helmet for his epilepsy, AFO's for his legs, kenetic tape to help straighten his fingers!!..... Shall I go on? Autism is an excuse and the poo child just needs a coping method ...who ever said exposure to life is correct !!!!.......from the mum of two autistic children!

Flobochin · 06/03/2019 08:21

I think bags of poo hanging from trees is offensive and littering. Even if you intend to return to collect. Double bag the poo and take it with you is the answer.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 06/03/2019 08:22

That is disgusting. You have to take responsibility for your pet’s poo and carry it until you can put it in the bin. Hanging it on a tree is completely antisocial and the person who spotted you was right to criticise. I hope you change your behaviour after reading this thread.

IWantChocolates · 06/03/2019 08:24

This perhaps explains why I see bags of dog poo hanging around, I had no idea this was a thing. Yuck.

Take it with you in a double bag as suggested, no-one else wants to see it and you just encourage other dog walkers to do similar but they might not pick it up again.

AuntieCJ · 06/03/2019 08:24

Guide dogs are trained to shit in their own gardens on command. Train your dog to do this. Problem solved.

dogsdinnerlady · 06/03/2019 08:26

I walk in the forest here with my dogs. They poo in the undergrowth, away from the path. The Forestry Commission notice board here says either bag it and take it home OR 'stick and flick' ie get it off the path. There are no bins in the forest.
People still leave filled poo bags on the path, on the trees and tossed into the bushes. Poo will dry out and disintegrate eventually. Once sealed in bags it will be there for 1,000 years. Deer and other animals pick up and eat the bags. Scented nappy bags are the worst.

SciFiScream · 06/03/2019 08:29

A PP mentioned a coping method. Could you put some favourite fragrance on a favourite piece of cloth? Like a hanky or similar? Something for your DD to sniff if overwhelmed with the smell?
A combination of techniques might help (double bagging, bin to carry round, nice smells, changing route slightly, campaigning for bins)

Good luck.

Re the campaigning for bins - we had to do that in our local area and none of the people that campaigned for bins had dogs - because other people were leaving bags of poo beside the football pitch. Disgusting dog owners who don't pick up and carry.
We got 2 bins.

Vulpine · 06/03/2019 08:36

It makes me gag but that's ok? Can't you just put it somewhere child can't see it?

thedisorganisedmum · 06/03/2019 08:47

If my baby needs a nappy change when we are walking the dogs, would you find it acceptable if I just plonked the full nappy bag on a tree until we come back? (if we even remember to collect)
