Dog poo etiquette

HelenLaBloodyAnnoyed · 05/03/2019 21:53

When walking my dog, he usually poos within the first ten mins. I obviously pick it up but I then leave the bag hanging on a fence or a tree to collect on the way back. I do this because DD has autism and the smell and sight of the poo would bother her the entire time, she'd be gagging or even sick. Tonight a fellow dog walker criticised me for it, saying it spoils the view Hmm There are no bins on this particular walk (which takes around an hour and a half) so it's necessary to take it home. Is it unreasonable to collect it on the way back?

Have you been caught doing this and seeing if your excuse is plausible?
It seems very bizarre to be hanging it anywhere. get some ziploc or other sealable bags and take it with you like any responsible dog owner does,

Topseyt · 05/03/2019 22:10

Yes, it is totally unreasonable of you to do this. Take it with you and bin it, as the rest of us have to do.

I'm afraid it is just hard luck if your DD doesn't like it and reacts that way. Alter your route if necessary to go via a poo bin.

Clearing up dog poo is part of the responsibility of having a dog. Their mess is your mess. Clear it up and take the bag away with you, otherwise it is litter as well as shit. Your DD will have to learn that this is the rule when you have a dog.

drinkygin · 05/03/2019 22:12

Very unreasonable.

Heyha · 05/03/2019 22:13

Just a note on stick and flick- that's really unhelpful if there's a chance of where you're walking either being grazed by livestock OR cut for hay later in the year (and if you don't know- assume that it will be). The parasites in the poo won't stay exactly where you flicked it and they can cause spontaneous abortion in livestock even if in hay.

I think that's probably why I'm one of the few who doesn't mind you going back for it IF you definitely will and can hide it well- I'd rather that than have my sheep have the trauma of losing lambs because people decide to stick and flick instead.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/03/2019 22:13

If I were you, OP, I’d invest in a special back pack or bum bag, just for dog walking. Double bag the poo, stash out of your dd’s sight in the back pack/bum bag, and bin when you get home.

HelenLaBloodyAnnoyed · 05/03/2019 22:14

She can't learn not to be physically sick Topseyt. The dog is her therapy dog.

The walk is in the woods and only used by dog owners. I could tuck it away instead I guess but I thought that makes it look like I don't intend to return for it.

It isn’t disgusting, as a previous poster has said, but actually, you are technically littering and could be fined if you were caught. There’s really no need to leave unsightly poo bags dangling for everyone else to see. Double bag it, use scented bags, or buy one of those hard cases designed for popping your filled poo bags in. There’s no excuse! I’m a dog owner and would never leave mine dangling!

SciFiScream · 05/03/2019 22:20

The dog is her therapy dog and it's difficult for her to handle the sensory elements of the dog? That's a difficult match.
Could you leave your DD at home with someone when you walk the dog?
You definitely need to come up with a solution that means you don't leave it behind. Ask the LA to put a new bin in? Put a bin there your self with a sign saying you'll collect later?
What you are doing is really, really, really grim.

IceBearRocks · 05/03/2019 22:22

Use black poo bags and then double or triple bag it.....then put in a carrier bag !

TrixieFranklin · 05/03/2019 22:25

No don't tuck them away - take them with you.

Stressedout10 · 05/03/2019 22:26

My ds has asd and really has problems with the smell and site too. However we double bag it and carry it.
This is what you need to do.
Oh and round here it's a £1000 fine

TrixieFranklin · 05/03/2019 22:27

At what point is she physically sick? Surely the actual dog pooing and then the picking it up is the worst bit when she sees/smells the fresh unbagged poo and then sees you picking it up.

Coulddowithanap · 05/03/2019 22:29

If it's her dog then she will have to learn how to pick up its poo at some point. You are just teaching bad habits.

anniehm · 05/03/2019 22:30

No, it never acceptable to bag and hang, I collect bags up frequently and bin them! If you are in the countryside just flick into a hedge if you can't dispose in a bin

Squickety · 05/03/2019 22:30

I have a dog and it's never even occurred to me to do this, where I go the poo goes with me until we either get to a bin or get home. I always assume if someone has hung it up it's because for some idiotic reason they think it's better than leaving it on the floor. I have never seen anyone come back to collect one! My dog gets distressed if the poobag is anywhere near her so I end up carrying it, or if she's off lead, wearing it attached to her lead handbag style. I've even been known to put it in my pocket in extreme circumstances and wash my coat afterwards (poo in bag, not naked poo obvs).

CluedoAddict · 05/03/2019 22:30

That is not on at all. You would get a fine here if you were seen. Get a clip lock Tupperware type box that would contain the smell.

longearedbat · 05/03/2019 22:33

Trouble is, no one knows you intend to pick it up on the way back, it's just another abandoned bag of shit as far as they are concerned. Take it with you. Double bag it and put in a carrier. I don't see how the smell could escape from that.

Deadbudgie · 05/03/2019 22:33

Please don’t use your DD as an excuse for your laziness. You can buy zipped pouches which are scented and fit to your belt to carry poo bags. Buy one of these.

I would never hang a poo bag from a tree. It’s disgusting and I’m a dog owner

Iltavilli · 05/03/2019 22:33

As another pp mentioned it is £1000 here too, and quite frankly I do hope you are fined so you choose to opt for one of the great suggestions above (as the LA to install your own bin!). Our dog has had a nasty case of the runs in the last week and despite it being a hideous task we’ve been prepared for it and not let any mess be left behind for others. There are lots of clean, smell free ways of doing this, you are choosing to litter and behave anti-socially.

OrangeJuiceandArmchairs · 05/03/2019 22:35

Please consider getting a dicky bag. I have one and its fabulous.

www.dickybag.com

Honestly. Problem solved.

HelenLaBloodyAnnoyed · 05/03/2019 22:36

No, I'm a lone parent so I can't leave her behind. I've tried black bags, double bags, scented bags. She still remains uncomfortable.

OP posts:
GruciusMalfoy · 05/03/2019 22:37

It's horrible. If the sight of it is too much for her, use a black dog poo bag. And as PPs have already said, you can buy small bags to zip away the poo bags. There's absolutely no excuse for leaving your dog's shit hanging on trees.

HelenLaBloodyAnnoyed · 05/03/2019 22:38

If I was lazy I wouldn't pick it up DeadBudgie.

The dicky bag looks worth a try; thanks OJ.

LizzieMacQueen · 05/03/2019 22:40

If it's always ten minutes into your walk I'd vary your route so your first 10/15 mins are in an area with a poo bin. Or do a quick 10/15 circular route back to your car/house before your actual longer walk. Alternatively, those carriers linked above are your answer.

Lockheart · 05/03/2019 22:40

If you genuinely always collect it on the way back and don't forget then ultimately there's no harm done. However, other people don't know that. They'll just see a poo bag left on a tree. It's unpleasant for other people and could land you with a fine for littering.

Invest in a dicky bag or other container which will keep the poo out of the sight and smell of you and your DD.
