Dog poo etiquette

When walking my dog, he usually poos within the first ten mins. I obviously pick it up but I then leave the bag hanging on a fence or a tree to collect on the way back. I do this because DD has autism and the smell and sight of the poo would bother her the entire time, she'd be gagging or even sick. Tonight a fellow dog walker criticised me for it, saying it spoils the view Hmm There are no bins on this particular walk (which takes around an hour and a half) so it's necessary to take it home. Is it unreasonable to collect it on the way back?

Sorry OP but YABVU!

It’s filthy and disgusting, the lovely trees in the woods near my house are littered with bags of dog poo left by lazy dog owners. Double bag it and put it in a bumbag/rucksack whatever.

What will your DD do when she had to walk the dog by herself? Genuine question.

Drum2018 · 05/03/2019 22:43

Buy a small back pack, bag the poo, put it in the back pack until you get home to your own bin to dispose of it. Your child won't see it or smell it if it's in a bag on your back.

Chloemol · 05/03/2019 22:43

What you are doing is disgusting. Who wants to see bags of dog poo hanging on fences or trees it is just wrong. I carry my dogs poo until the next bin however long away that is. My mother has a small bag she carries over her shoulder and puts the dog poo in its black bag in there until she finds a bin. You can do the same and that would then mean your daughter is not bothered

Lockheart · 05/03/2019 22:45

If the DD has autism and a therapy dog then she may not be able to walk the dog by herself @AguerosAngel...

underwiredknickers · 05/03/2019 22:46

YABVU.

AguerosAngel · 05/03/2019 22:48

@Lockheart, thank you. I don’t really know anything about Autism so just wasn’t sure. Didn’t want to offend anyone. Smile

There's so much online about this, please find an alternative OP

Everyone where I walk my dog does this but leaves it on the side of the path (it loops round so you have to repeat yourself to get back to the car park) and they then chuck it in he bin as there's only one in the carpark.

I've actually picked them all up before when I've arrived back at the start and chucked them in the bin as I was going that way anyway.

It seems normal here :) rural woods though, not a busy place (apart from dog walkers).

Tinysarah1985 · 05/03/2019 22:53

It’s bloody grim, I have a dog and wouldn’t even consider that!

You can buy these and then empty it out at home or when you come to a bin

Double bag it and then put it in a plastic box.

Don't hang it on a tree - it's disgusting.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 05/03/2019 22:57

Yabu buy the dicky bag please.
Don’t drop litter.

janetforpresident · 05/03/2019 22:58

TrixieFranklin those poor horses. How horrible.

MellyPapa · 05/03/2019 23:02

If Ddog usually poops within ten minutes, then get out of the car, walk 5 minutes, turn back for another five minutes and Ddog will poop near the car so you can bag it and put it there for taking home. Then restart and enjoy your walk, easy.

TrixieFranklin · 05/03/2019 23:02

@janetforpresident I know Sad I appreciate bags hanging in poo in woodland are unlikely to be come across by horses but other wildlife may be effected too, it's such a simple thing to do - bag it and bin it.

Pinkbells · 05/03/2019 23:03

I do the same on our field walks (not hanging on a fence or tree, a bit more discreet!), otherwise I would be carrying it for an hour or more, but I wouldn't do it in a populated place, and I ALWAYS collect it on the way back (just fields, so no bin).

TrixieFranklin · 05/03/2019 23:03

In trees, not in poo Grin

PinkPaperCrown · 05/03/2019 23:07

We use a dicky bag. Stockpile all of the poos done per walk, then dispose of in one of only a few dog poo bins before we get home.

We’ve been using the dickybag for 8 years. It attaches to the lead and means no carrying of numerous bags or awful odours.

thedisorganisedmum · 05/03/2019 23:09

You'd be nearly better off leaving the poo as it is and bagging it on the way back. At least that's less plastic bag polluting the countryside, so many people just "forget" their bags, so what's the point?!?

tigerbear0906 · 05/03/2019 23:09

I have this bag, it has lots of compartments for poo bags, your phone, keys etc but also has a separate zip pocket on front that is specially lined so you can put a full poo bag in it and you can't smell it. It's great and saves you carrying it as it goes over your shoulder

Sorry but you have to find a way to take your own dog poo home op. Poo left in plastic is worse for wild life and the environment than the original natural waste. I would certainly not appreciate other people's smelly waste hanging off any fence of mine. It could also encourage others to do the same. Would you like that hanging off any property of yours and most fences belong to somebody.

I am also surprised that you think that because your daughter has a therapy dog this makes leaving the poo around excusable. I know people who have a therapy dog. It is an important condition of being accepted to own one that all aspects of expected responsible dog ownership is attended to. If this can't happen for any reason potential owners are not considered suitable.

LazyLizzy · 05/03/2019 23:10

If everybody did it how would you know which bag was yours?

I think it's grim. I hate carrying them but I would try and do a route where there was a bin somewhere. I'd never leave them 'for later'.

In your case OP I'd have to use an industrial carrier or maybe an insulated freezer bag just to store the poo bags in on your walk.

NunoGoncalves · 05/03/2019 23:11

Haha I was going to say the same thing! It's so logical.

Tailfeather · 05/03/2019 23:11

I do this, but hide it so as not to offend anyone and then pick it up on my way back past.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 05/03/2019 23:18

One option OP would be to campaign the land owner to place some dog poop bins along the walk? You could offer to fundraiser with other dog walkers for the bins?

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 05/03/2019 23:21

It doesn’t matter if she’s “uncomfortable”. She’ll learn to get used to it.
