Dog poo etiquette

HelenLaBloodyAnnoyed · 05/03/2019 21:53

When walking my dog, he usually poos within the first ten mins. I obviously pick it up but I then leave the bag hanging on a fence or a tree to collect on the way back. I do this because DD has autism and the smell and sight of the poo would bother her the entire time, she'd be gagging or even sick. Tonight a fellow dog walker criticised me for it, saying it spoils the view Hmm There are no bins on this particular walk (which takes around an hour and a half) so it's necessary to take it home. Is it unreasonable to collect it on the way back?

Ugh this is utterly grim OP. Pick up the poo, double bag and put it in your pocket it in a rucksack or whatever so it’s out of sight of your DD.

acciocat · 06/03/2019 09:01

What about people who are just as repulsed by the sight of your shitty bag hanging off a tree as your kid is by you carrying it?
Or don’t they matter because they aren’t your family?

shpoot · 06/03/2019 09:15

Think OP is probably just going to carry on doing it. Put it in a box or walk back to the bin.

Disgusting. I'm so sick of seeing dog shit everywhere

I want everyone to get fines every time they do it. But it won't happen. Disgusting people

howwillwedeal · 06/03/2019 09:20

Is OP coming back? Or does she not like the responses!

echt · 06/03/2019 09:27

I'm going to bite and say the OP has played the trump card of the NT status of her child very early to get her off the hook of commonsense/good manners behaviour.

And it hasn't worked.

Vixxxy · 06/03/2019 09:46

Thats gross, and clearly the solution is to double bag, rather than just leave shite hanging in random places Hmm I don't see how anyone would think this is ok, but a few round here do as fairly frequently there are dog shite surprises hanging on trees on the way to my kids school.

Vixxxy · 06/03/2019 09:58

Also there are a fair few rubbish bins in the area, including one specifically for dog shit. For some reason, they pic it up, hang it on a tree, and walk past the bin. Always confused the fuck out of me!

Wolfiefan · 06/03/2019 10:03

It’s grim. Completely grim.
To all dog owners who do this? Get a DICKY BAG!!!!!!
I’ll stop shouting now. It’s a neoprene bag where you can put your filled bag. Zip it up. Hands free and no smell. They’re awesome.
Stick and flick is fine in rarely frequented woodland but not in parks etc.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 06/03/2019 10:11

I think the hanky with perfume on is a good idea OP if your DD would hold it to her face while you sort the poo out? Is that an option?

I see a dog walker frequently who leaves her dog poo bag hanging on a fence while she walks just because she doesn’t want to carry it. She assures me that she always collects it on the way home. It bugs me.

ErickBroch · 06/03/2019 10:16

YABVU and tbh I don't believe many ever collect them again, what a rubbish excuse.

kaitlinktm · 06/03/2019 10:19

Maybe this is why people started leaving bags of dog poo hanging in the hedge at the side of my house? One person did it intending to collect it and then everyone else thought it was the dog shit tree and saved themselves the trouble of dealing with their own dog shit and left it to me.

MrsPinkCock · 06/03/2019 10:34

Grim grim grim.

Change your walking route. There are five bins on mine so I’m only ever a few minutes away from one. Nobody likes carrying bags of shit around but it goes with the territory of being a dog owner!

thedisorganisedmum · 06/03/2019 10:41

kaitlinktm
that's disgusting. I would complain to the council - not sure it would go anywhere, but they might put a bin somewhere a bit further.

It's not great having a poop bin near next to your garden. Around here they dont' seem to be emptied often enough, so people just drop their bags around here and homeowners have to put up with the stink.

CMOTDibbler · 06/03/2019 10:41

I'm another dicky bag fan. They are so effective in keeping the smell in that we have to be careful in making sure they are emptied due to previous occasions of full ones being left in the car for weeks (and still not being able to smell them)

MidniteScribbler · 06/03/2019 10:46

I have six dogs, so am well used to dealing with poo. If you own a dog, for any reason, you clean up after them. You don't get to leave poo bags around, even if you claim you come back for them later (which most people don't end up bothering with). There is no excuse for not picking up after your pet.

Eliza9917 · 06/03/2019 10:54

I hope everyone is using degradable poo bags, especially the double & triple baggers.

Leaving poo bags hanging is disgusting.

rededucator · 06/03/2019 10:56

Buy a click lid Tupperware and then put the poo bag in that. Tupperware then goes inside your rucksack. I can't believe you think it's acceptable to hang it on a tree for later. Total disregard for wildlife safety and the view for other walkers. Very selfish behaviour.

SciFiScream · 06/03/2019 11:11

I've been wracking my brains as to anyway it might be acceptable for you to leave a bag of poo behind and my crazy idea is:
Carry a stapler and a selection of laminated labels with you. The labels will say you intend to pick up on walk back (so should really be dated and timed) and include your mobile number.

It's probably easier to pick the stinking package up though!

Bumblebeezy · 06/03/2019 11:19

No one should be leaving bags of dog poo anywhere other than a bin.

Whilst I don't doubt the severity of the son's sensory issues there are an absolute tonne of very simple and very obvious solutions to this.

I wonder whether it's not just the child who has an issue with carrying poo but the OP. It's really not difficult to find something to discreetly carry a bag of dog poo.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/03/2019 12:12

"Is OP coming back? Or does she not like the responses!"

She did come back yesterday evening, @howwillwedeal, and said that she would look at getting one of the dicky bags that had already been suggested upthread - which suggests to me that she has taken on board people's comments, and accepted she is not being reasonable.

On a side note - assuming you simply didn't spot the OP's updates - if you go to the top of the page and click on the downward arrow by Talk (v), you can customise threads to show all your posts highlighted in one colour, and all those of the OP in another - which helps you to pick out their updates, when the thread is long and busy.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 06/03/2019 12:15

I would suggest asking whoever is responsible for the path to put in bins seeing as it’s a problem. May start a petition or offer to fundraise for the cost of the bins?

howwillwedeal · 06/03/2019 12:22

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius I missed that, thank you!

Wolfiefan · 06/03/2019 12:44

@CMOTDibbler me too. I generally give it a squeeze when I finish a walk to check it is actually empty.
I unzip and wash it occasionally and put a car air freshener in it too. No whiffs. They’re brill!

MrsExpo · 06/03/2019 12:56

(Speaking as a dog owner and regular walker ...) ... it's utterly gross when people do this. How is the rest of the world supposed to know that you're intending to pick up on the return trip. Double or triple bag it, use a small back-pack and put it in there for the rest of the walk if your DD really can't stand it. Even use a plastic box with a sealing lid to contain the bags if you're squeamish about doing that. Whatever you do, DON"T leave it hanging for the rest of us to see.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/03/2019 12:56

No worries, @howwillwedeal - it is so easy to miss updates on a thread like this one. Thanks
