Dog poo etiquette

HelenLaBloodyAnnoyed · 05/03/2019 21:53

When walking my dog, he usually poos within the first ten mins. I obviously pick it up but I then leave the bag hanging on a fence or a tree to collect on the way back. I do this because DD has autism and the smell and sight of the poo would bother her the entire time, she'd be gagging or even sick. Tonight a fellow dog walker criticised me for it, saying it spoils the view Hmm There are no bins on this particular walk (which takes around an hour and a half) so it's necessary to take it home. Is it unreasonable to collect it on the way back?

It doesn’t matter if she’s “uncomfortable”. She’ll learn to get used to it.

That’s not how autism works Hmm

sweeneytoddsrazor · 05/03/2019 23:22

Just bag it, and put it in a carrier bag. Can you put the carrier bag underneath the buggy so it's out of sight, or can you walk the dog whilst DD is at school?

thedisorganisedmum · 05/03/2019 23:23

to campaign the land owner to place some dog poop bins along the walk?

sounds reasonable, but who would be in charge of emptying the bins?

starzig · 05/03/2019 23:24

That is absolutely disgusting. Can't handle poo, don't have a dog.

Howzaboutye · 05/03/2019 23:26

Disgusting.
Anti social.
You need to find a solution for your family that does not result in shit hanging at children's head height in bushes.

Utterly disgusting you should not do this.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 05/03/2019 23:26

Good point. If council land I guess the council are responsible. If private land it would have to be discussed to see if it was an option first and then discuss who would empty.

That’s not how autism works

Autism doesn’t mean you get to check out of life and get exactly what you want all the time. Part of life is experiencing uncomfortable things. Sometimes you just have to, and everyone can learn that.

forestafantastica · 05/03/2019 23:28

Completely disgusting. Why on earth should everyone else have to walk along your poo decorated path? It's absolutely your responsibility to find a solution which works for your daughter that doesn't turn into 'random strangers have to deal with your dog's crap instead'.

Your dog. Your responsibility.

Lovingbenidorm · 05/03/2019 23:29

Dog poo etiquette is simple
Move it or eat it
Totally disgusting

Purpleartichoke · 05/03/2019 23:31

Change your route so you get back home with the waste and then do an extended walk.

Also, please don’t use anyone else’s bins. It needs to be in a designated waste bin or your own home bin.

Grumpelstilskin · 05/03/2019 23:35

It is a totally shitty thing to do. Someone else already mentioned how such stupid behaviour has killed horses. Plus it can be deadly for other wildlife too. I'm a dog walker and I loathe people like you!

ILoveMaxiBondi · 05/03/2019 23:35

Oh yawn.

CloserIAm2Fine · 05/03/2019 23:43

YABVU

If DD can’t cope with this very basic aspect of dog walking then you need to change your walk so that you walk somewhere with a bin even if it means going round the block a few times til ddog has had a poo.

BlueSlipperSocks · 05/03/2019 23:52

Get one of these. £4. Double bag the poo, pop it in the container and zip it up. Hey Presto! no smell and no unsightly poo bags hanging from trees/fences. Stop leaving bags of poo around the place. There's no need. People like you give all dog owners a bad name!

(Not sure if the pic has attached).

That's a very narrow minded view of a condition that affects day to day life very severely. Hopefully you don't know anyone with autism as you don't sound very sympathetic!

siestakey · 06/03/2019 00:17

@ILoveMaxiBondi ooops! Sorry I misread it that you posted that!

My comment was directed at whoever wrote it originally.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 06/03/2019 00:19

No worries, siesta. I agree with you!

siestakey · 06/03/2019 00:19

Not sure why people are getting so het up on this thread about it being disgusting, it's only bad if you don't pick it up on your way back to the carpark.

At our local dog walking area it's normal to leave it on the path then pick it up on your way back.

siestakey · 06/03/2019 00:20

@ILoveMaxiBondi ThanksGrin Sorry, it's late I guess 😂 and I'm trying to concentrate on Netflix too.

Topseyt · 06/03/2019 02:02

You cannot use your DD and her autism as an excuse to litter the area with poo filled plastic bags. You would very likely still be landed with a large fine if you try.

Several solutions have been suggested. Get something that works for you before your next walk because what you are doing at the moment is disgusting and gets the rest of us dog owners a bad name.

I have two dogs. Clearing up is obviously not the most pleasant of tasks, but it has to be done. It goes with the territory.

Rubberduckies · 06/03/2019 04:56

I've never met anyone in real life who gets too concerned about this. I use very brightly coloured poo bags which I leave by the gate of the field I walk dogly in. When I leave the field I pick up the bag and take home as there are no bins. Been doing it for years and have never forgotten the bag, never had someone remove it before me, never had someone get cross about it. I don't see what's so disgusting about leaving a bag for half an hour. I wouldn't hang it in a tree because I'd worry about someone hitting their head!

strawberrisc · 06/03/2019 05:24

No. Just no. Found this on a recent dog walk. Wonder if they are cumming back for it later? 🤢

Because other people don't know it's for half an hour. Around here if you got caught doing that you'd be fined anyway. It's grim. If you're in the country flick it into a hedge or just double bag it and carry it with you!

floribunda18 · 06/03/2019 05:32

Ah, this explains the long standing conundrum of bags of poo hanging on trees! I always wondered why people took the trouble to pick the poo up, then decorated a tree with the bag.

YABU. Double bag the poo, put it in your coat pocket until you find a bin, take it home and put it in your own bin. Choose walks where there is a bin. Wear old, machine washable coats for dog walking.

For future reference the etiquette is that it is never acceptable to hang a bag of poo on a tree, it is completely disgusting.

Meandmetoo · 06/03/2019 05:51

It's fine op if you collect it on the way back, especially for the reasons you give.
