when you are in an office with a couple of staff, and you are earning at least 7 times their salary, is incredibly insensitive?

I think yabu. You can complain about stuff that is causing you an issue even if others have it worse. It's not a competition.
When a friend was telling me about an argument she had with her mother I didn't get offended because my mother is dead.

clairemcnam · 01/03/2019 16:24

Gregory If you have earnings of £6k a month, then you are skint because of your choices.

clairemcnam · 01/03/2019 16:25

Oysterbabe I agree 100% with friends. I disagree when we are talking about work colleagues.

averystrangeweek · 01/03/2019 16:25

If someone is on £20k and the other person is on £140k+, then yes, totally reasonable to be completely hacked off with them complaining that they're short of cash. Because they are comparatively loaded, and being completely insensitive.

Bluntness100 · 01/03/2019 16:26

And remember these people are not my friends

I think that's clear.

BitchQueen90 · 01/03/2019 16:27

I don't think YABU. But then I think that paying for private school fees and similar is a privilege and you should consider yourself lucky if you can do that.

Whisky2014 · 01/03/2019 16:27

Grin bluntness!

clairemcnam · 01/03/2019 16:28

So just calculated it, they will have a take home pay of at least £7,500, minus any pension contributions. My take home pay is £1,000.

OP posts:
Whisky2014 · 01/03/2019 16:28

So?

BuildingBackUp · 01/03/2019 16:29

Depends on the type of moan really...some people with high salaries are still cash poor 🤷🏻‍♀️

clairemcnam · 01/03/2019 16:29

Because of all those saying they wont actually be taking that much home once tax comes off. That is simply not true.

OP posts:
riotlady · 01/03/2019 16:29

Yanbu!
As others have said, a big mortgage and school fees etc are a choice, it doesn’t change the fact that you’re massively better off than your employees

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 01/03/2019 16:30

I don’t think you’re being unreasonable. It’s fine to have a bit of a moan about money, but to do that in an office full of subordinates who earn a hell of a lot less is insensitive at best.

BillytheMountain · 01/03/2019 16:31

YANBU OP, it is insensitive and a bit crass to boot

NannyRed · 01/03/2019 16:31

@Clairemcnam, you’re just bitter. I doubt you do the same job as your colleagues on seven times your salary!

TimetoChange2017 · 01/03/2019 16:32

You're clearly absolutely sure you're not being unreasonable, so why ask?

clairemcnam · 01/03/2019 16:32

Who said I did the same job? I didn't.

OP posts:
IceIceCoffee · 01/03/2019 16:32

Yanbu its an unpopular opinion on here but I agree. People on six figure salarys moaning about getting by when people have to survove on absoloute minimum and still get by. Its crass.

Whisky2014 · 01/03/2019 16:32

Yeh, you are just coming across as bitter and jealous.

Peanutbutterforever · 01/03/2019 16:34

They earn more than you do.

They are being crass talking about it, you are being over sensitive to that.

clairemcnam · 01/03/2019 16:35

Okay whisky, your opinion. I think you come across on multiple threads as aggressive and nasty.

OP posts:
Smileymoon · 01/03/2019 16:36

Of course it is insensitive. Anybody who thinks it isn't just lacks a sense of decency.

YepImafraidIchangeditagain · 01/03/2019 16:36

OP, I get the point you're trying to make. Although if you come here for opinions, don't be pissed off when you get them.

Whilst you say that huge outgoings on a huge salary are a choice, most of these people will have no doubt earned their way into their position and worked their asses of to earn a high income.

They probably see it as a choice that you earn so little. You haven't worked as hard to get further etc....

So just calculated it, they will have a take home pay of at least £7,500, minus any pension contributions. My take home pay is £1,000.*

Please don't count other people's money, it's so crass.

I couldn't guess how much my very closest friends or my brother earns and we don't discuss.

If you don't like the topic, just walk away from it.
People will always have complaints, no matter of money, upbringing, race, religion etc.

Just get over it and I'm sure you'll be happier.

Bluntness100 · 01/03/2019 16:36

Op, there is something about your posting style that rings a bell. The anger. Are you thr poster whose life didn't turn out as expected, is disabled and whose husband has to work locally as he can't do th commute any more due to age, and you were living hand to mouth and worried about losing your home?

I suspect your colleague may not understand your financial difficulties, they are simply sounding off.
