I broke DHs glasses

LellowYedbetter · 01/03/2019 10:10

I live in a family of gog botherers, both of my sons and DH but I’m not although should be but I never went back.
Anyway DH is fiercely protective of his and if you go anywhere near them or touch them he panics and flaps. Last night he’d left them on the bedside table. I went to bed, was very tired and didn’t feel well and put the iPad on the bedside table in the dark on top of the glasses forgetting they were there. We both went to sleep. In the middle of the night I woke up, couldn’t get back to sleep so reached for the iPad, dragged it off the table and smeared his glasses. This morning they were all bent and he’s gone ape shit. I mean, proper meltdown, panicking, ignoring me as he was too flustered and ended up late for work.

AIBU to think this obsession is too much?? Or is it because I don’t wear them that I don’t get it?

@LellowYedbetter sensory issues or not, if you need glasses and don't wear them, can you drive safely? This has been asked many times, perhaps you should answer?

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 01/03/2019 10:34

If my husband broke my glasses he would not behave the way you are. I think you come across really selfish and quite horrible. I have terrible eyesight -12.25 in both eyes. My glasses can cost more than £600 becaus3 if I don’t get the thinnest lens possible I look like I’m wearing beer goggles. You should be apologising to your husband and think about the way you refer to people.

ellendegeneres · 01/03/2019 10:35

Gog botherers!? What the fuck!?
Glasses are needed because people can’t see without them. Without mine I see colours and nothing else. It gives me a headache.

If he had a hearing aid would you take the piss out of that too??

Oh, and just so it’s super clear- yes, yabvu

TwitterQueen1 · 01/03/2019 10:35

'gog botherer' and 'something plastic stuck to my face'

What a charming way of describing people who wear glasses. You can't be for real, surely?

FiveLittlePigs · 01/03/2019 10:35

Didn't you post a few weeks ago using the gogs/ goggles description for spectacles or glasses with your DH mocking you for also wearing them? I only ask because I've not ever in my lifetime of wearing glasses heard then referred to as gogs and it seems quite coincidental. And to answer your immature question, yes, anyone who has to wear glasses to see, is lost without them.

If this is true and not some sort of ”joke” thread, then grow up.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 01/03/2019 10:36

Whose side of the bed were his glasses?
You've got a strange way of viewing (oops) glasses, like they are purely a fashion accessory and not something that he NEEDS to wear.

outpinked · 01/03/2019 10:37

Glasses aren’t cheap so I would be a bit pissed off but not to the extent I’d lose my shit, most people who need them either have contact lenses or a spare pair just in case something like this happens.

I sat on my DP’s last year and broke them. He realised it was his own fault for leaving them on the bed and definitely didn’t go apeshit.

BlueSkiesLies · 01/03/2019 10:37

Well, they are expensive and PITA to get replaced.

But he should put them on his side of the bed surely? Or in a case??

TwitterQueen1 · 01/03/2019 10:37

My DD wears hearing aids. Do share your no doubt lovely description of these.

GrapesAndCheese · 01/03/2019 10:38

YABU. It sounds like you were careless to break the glasses, it was a mistake, but you don't sound remorseful at all. That's probably really pudding off your DP.

'I'm clumsy' isn't an excuse. I'm really fucking clumsy but if I broke something of DPs I wouldn't expect to be off the hook because of my clumsiness. I would be really really sorry and do what I could to rectify the situation.

And yeah as another specs wearer, I'd be totally fucked if you broke mine because I wouldn't be able to see.

SureTry · 01/03/2019 10:38

You're rude aren't you! Gog botherers. Would you like it if your family came up with a crappy little term for your sensory issues? If I don't wear my glasses I end up with headaches.

Next time you post, try to avoid the tacky terms only used in a vain attempt to make you look like a clever little OP.

howwillwedeal · 01/03/2019 10:38

@FiveLittlePigs I remember that and yes the only place I've heard glasses called goggs is on MN!

movinonup · 01/03/2019 10:39

If he needs his glasses to function, He should really take better care of them AND have a spare pair.
That being said OP, Your attitude does suck! I know it was an accident but you could show a bit more sympathy/empathy to someone you love.

Wishimaywishimight · 01/03/2019 10:39

If I were your DH there would be little point in you driving me to work as, without my glasses I couldn't do any work (very short sighted). No idea what 'gog botherers' or 'pin toon' mean but you sound like you don't give a toss about the expense and inconvenience you have caused your DH.

Sirzy · 01/03/2019 10:40

If someone accidentally broke my glasses but was apologetic then I would be fine. If someone broke them with the attitude of the Op and so little remorse then I would be mighty pissed off

Barrenfieldoffucks · 01/03/2019 10:40

You sound ridiculous.

burritofan · 01/03/2019 10:41

AIBU to think this obsession is too much??

I'm boggled (or goggled, to use your vernacular?) you think a dependence on a visual aid is an "obsession". Do you feel this way about crutches, wheelchairs, braces, hearing aids, pacemakers, medication?

winsinbin · 01/03/2019 10:42

Are people who need mobility aids ‘stick botherers’?

I am deaf and wear hearing aids - what funny nickname would you have for me OP? I would be devastated if someone accidentally broke them, not because I am obsessed but because I cannot fully participate in everyday life without them.

Until having life changing surgery some years ago I was absolutely dependent on glasses and contact lenses. I couldn’t see to read or cross the street or watch tv without them. If someone had broken them I would have been unable to leave the house on my own. You seem very casual about other people’s needs.

BollocksToBrexit · 01/03/2019 10:42

If he needs his glasses to function, He should really take better care of them AND have a spare pair.

I agree about taking better care of them. Mine are either being worn or straight into the case. I never leave them lying around.

I disagree about having a spare pair. Glasses are expensive and some people can't afford to have a spare pair. Mine cost £800 just for the lenses. There's no way I could justify have a spare pair sat around in case something happened to the other pair.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 01/03/2019 10:43

His glasses should have been in the case, that's why you get a case with them. Your DH should also have more than one pair. I only wear readers but I have two pairs, you always seem to get the second pair half price.

Yes I would be annoyed if DH smashed my Raybans, but if you are that dependant on them you should have a plan for accidents.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 01/03/2019 10:43

Obsession? With being able to see clearly? Wtf planet are you on that your attitude makes sense to you? I am genuinely bewildered.

My dh wears hearing aids, without them he can barely hear which makes him feel completely cut off from the world. He looks after those things very carefully, not only are they expensive but they are his link.

Even the kids seem to understand this better than you.

RestingBitchFaced · 01/03/2019 10:44

Sounds like you should be wearing glasses OP, then maybe you wouldn't be so clumsy! You never went back after you were told you needed them? Should you be driving? Very unreasonable

QueenOfTheAndals · 01/03/2019 10:44

"Gog botherers" is an actual term? I assumed it was a typo and wondered what being religious had to do with it! Anyway, if he can't see without his glasses then YABU to call it an "obsession". He really should have a spare pair though.

SharkSave · 01/03/2019 10:44

Yeah I'd be totally pissed off. I can't function without mine.
You sound totally dismissive and bloody rude!

howwillwedeal · 01/03/2019 10:44

@MaybeitsMaybelline glasses as PPs state can be very expensive a second pair may be out of reach for him financially.
