I broke DHs glasses

LellowYedbetter · 01/03/2019 10:10

I live in a family of gog botherers, both of my sons and DH but I’m not although should be but I never went back.
Anyway DH is fiercely protective of his and if you go anywhere near them or touch them he panics and flaps. Last night he’d left them on the bedside table. I went to bed, was very tired and didn’t feel well and put the iPad on the bedside table in the dark on top of the glasses forgetting they were there. We both went to sleep. In the middle of the night I woke up, couldn’t get back to sleep so reached for the iPad, dragged it off the table and smeared his glasses. This morning they were all bent and he’s gone ape shit. I mean, proper meltdown, panicking, ignoring me as he was too flustered and ended up late for work.

AIBU to think this obsession is too much?? Or is it because I don’t wear them that I don’t get it?

OP posts:
howwillwedeal · 02/03/2019 14:59

@thesnapandfartisinfallible OPs posting history would lead everyone to believe she's an adult, with adult children ...

pollymere · 02/03/2019 17:29

Buy him a wooden nose or similar he can put his glasses on at night to say sorry.

dragonsfire · 02/03/2019 17:39

Well Tbf one- why were they on your side and two if he is that obsessed why doesn’t he put them in a case every night?

I think you could have been more sympathetic but he should have put them in a safe place so not all the blame is on you.

Am glad they are fixed tho!

MTGGirl · 02/03/2019 17:45

I can't drive or see properly without my glasses. The lenses cost about 500 quit. I'd go ape shit crazy if my husband/son broke them. I'd be out of circulation for about 2 weeks (special order lenses) and would have a constant migraine.
If they were any cheaper I'd have another pair, and not make a huuuge fuss, but like this I would

nokidshere · 02/03/2019 18:45

I wouldn't panic but I am lost without them. I put my suitcase on mine a week ago and they are still being fixed Confused luckily I have prescription sunglasses but it's very hard without my regular ones - not to mention watching tv with sunglasses on looks ridiculous

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/03/2019 18:50

My Dh needs his glasses to function, he has very poor eyesight. I don't think In ten years of being together I have ever touched his glasses. They are essentially his eyes. I don't think it's an obsession.

And 'gog botherers' is horrible.

SoupDragon · 02/03/2019 18:56

why were they on your side

where does it say this?

dragonsfire · 02/03/2019 18:58

@SoupDragon why is oils the OP be putting an iPad down on other side?

Was abit of an assumption but seems weird OP would walk around to put IPad on his side?

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 02/03/2019 19:51

OPs posting history would lead everyone to believe she's an adult, with adult children ...

Yes so we thought but her attitude seems to suggest otherwise...

Sara107 · 02/03/2019 20:03

Maybe I’ve missed an explanation as to why the specs and iPad were on the same bedside table. Not handy for DH if he keeps his glasses on the side of the bed he can’t reach, and not handy for OP if she is having to reach across him to grab her iPad. It would really annoy me to have a non- sleeping bed partner fiddling about with their tablet in the wee hours ( even if they didn’t break my glasses)....

Pumpkinbell · 02/03/2019 20:45

If you put the i pad / tablet on top of them at the side of the bed surely they were on your side of the bed for you to be able to reach them in the middle if the night in which case its your DH’S problem not yourd, make him use his own side of the bed !!

Teacher22 · 02/03/2019 22:14

Get a spare pair of Readyspecs for four quid as a back up in case it happens again and replace the broke ones ASAP. For the future consider laser surgery or replacement lenses at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Three grand an eye and a permanent solution.

MitziK · 02/03/2019 22:22

Readyspex are for reading only, not distance vision. And laser surgery doesn't last forever even if it's performed completely successfully.

Cloudly · 02/03/2019 23:48

I totally get your DH hope he sorts out getting extra pairs accidents do happen.

janetforpresident · 02/03/2019 23:58

(second poster recently to use 'gogs')
I am fairly sure this is the same woman. Especially as she doesn't wear her glasses despite needing them. The other posters DH was teasing her about wearing "gogs" now his have been broken.

I would say that the pair of you behave like teenagers but teenagers wouldn't laugh at each other for wearing glasses it's just such a normal regular thing for most humans. It would be like me laughing at my DH for having facial hair or him laughing at me for having breasts. Glasses are normal, unfunny and boring. Get over yourself.

janetforpresident · 03/03/2019 00:01

Teacher22 if only I had known it would cost me just £6k to stop having to wear these perfectly comfortable and nice looking glasses I would have sorted it in a heartbeat. They are nice and I barely notice I am wearing them but honestly I would definitely be better off spending my savings sorting it out because there is the odd idiot out there who might call me a gog botherer!!!

RollaCola84 · 03/03/2019 00:09

My glasses cost over £400, I can't see without them. Its illegal for me to drive without them and I couldn't do my job without them. Too right I'd be pissed if someone damaged my glasses to the point they couldn't be worn and didn't appear to take it seriously.

My partner broke a pair of my glasses a few years ago, knocking them off a shelf in a hotel bathroom by mistake. He apologised profusely and paid for them to be repaired.

Oh and I spent 14 years of schooling being called names for wearing glasses, I wouldn't expect to hear name calling like that from an adult.

YABU. HTH.

SharkSave · 03/03/2019 06:37

@Teacher22 not everyone can have laser eye surgery even if they can afford it. I was deemed unsuitable by two separate doctors. I wish it was that simple!

Thegoodthere · 03/03/2019 07:10

From a pp Sounds like you did it on purpose because you have some weird problem with him needing his glasses and think he’s over reliant on them!

This. You have a weirdly aggressive reaction about this. I don't know if it's because you have such an aversion to glasses that you can't even stand seeing them on other people, or because you think because you manage fine (!) without them, no on eelse should need them, but I'm amazed they got bent from just falling on the floor.

In a related point, this thread is full of hilarious typos from all sorts of posters. I think OP's blindness is catching Grin

kbPOW · 03/03/2019 07:37

YABU. Also your account of how the damage occurred and what the damage is does not tally.

VanGoghsDog · 03/03/2019 09:15

@Teacher22

Hilarious. Point me to where I can get Readyspex in minus seven, with varifocal vision and corrected for astigmatism?
Anything they sell would be entirely useless to me and possibly make my eyesight worse.

And I can't have laser surgery for various reasons but even if I did, due to my complex prescription, I'd still need glasses.

JaceLancs · 03/03/2019 09:25

My glasses are my eyes too
If I accidentally knock them off my bedside cabinet I can’t see to find them!
I couldn’t drive or leave the house safely as wouldn’t be able to see where kerb or pavements ended etc - couldn’t cross a road safely
Would not be possible, to cook, clean, go to work or manage some basic personal care tasks
Hope OP now understands
I do have spare glasses despite them costing around £700, I can no longer wear contact lenses and eye surgery is not suitable and has risks
I would be furious

LoniceraJaponica · 03/03/2019 09:42

Teacher22 you clearly know absolutely nothing about eyesight problems. The reading glasses that you can buy off the shelf are for long sightedness. Those glasses will not help those of us who are very short sighted and/or have astigmatism or other complex eye problems.

@LellowYedbetter please go and get your eyes tested. All adults regardless of whether they think they need glasses or not should have eye tests every two years as an eye test can pick up a number of health problems as well as checking your eyesight.

And if you need glasses FGS put your big girl pants on and stop using the excuse of sensory problems to not wear them if you are driving. There is a huge choice of glasses styles these days, and there will be some that are more comfortable than others.

LagunaBubbles · 03/03/2019 10:11

Yabu and quite nasty as well. Oh what a jolly old jape, accidentally destroying someone's glasses yet turn it round to be his problem because he has an "obsession" with them. Still don't get why you used that word either, do you you really not understand what glasses are for?!

LagunaBubbles · 03/03/2019 10:13

Well aren't you showing your ignorance!
