I broke DHs glasses

LellowYedbetter · 01/03/2019 10:10

I live in a family of gog botherers, both of my sons and DH but I’m not although should be but I never went back.
Anyway DH is fiercely protective of his and if you go anywhere near them or touch them he panics and flaps. Last night he’d left them on the bedside table. I went to bed, was very tired and didn’t feel well and put the iPad on the bedside table in the dark on top of the glasses forgetting they were there. We both went to sleep. In the middle of the night I woke up, couldn’t get back to sleep so reached for the iPad, dragged it off the table and smeared his glasses. This morning they were all bent and he’s gone ape shit. I mean, proper meltdown, panicking, ignoring me as he was too flustered and ended up late for work.

AIBU to think this obsession is too much?? Or is it because I don’t wear them that I don’t get it?

Teacher22, many of us have vision problems that render us unsuitable for laser eye surgery. I do not have binocular vision. It didn't develope when I was a small child due to belated surgical correction of serious squints (doctors wouldn't believe my mother when she tried to say there was something wrong, until it was too late).

My glasses help give me a measure of binocular vision. Not perfect, but it makes me legal to drive etc. and you don't miss what you have never had.

Also, you must be very wealthy if you would think nothing of shelling out £6k on something that may or may not work, and often doesn't last forever.

I cannot get cheap reading glasses. I am extremely long sighted and need a very different prescription in each eye. Over the counter glasses simply do not cater for all of that.

PickAChew · 03/03/2019 10:37

DH went for an assessment for laser eye therapy and was refused as his corneas are too thin. A common effect of laser eye surgery is ruining night vision. It's not without risk.

And with the suggestion of buying readyspex, it's obvious that some people are pretty ignorant. Teacher? Really?

howwillwedeal · 03/03/2019 10:39

Get a spare pair of Readyspecs for four quid as a back up in case it happens again and replace the broke ones ASAP.

Well if you can do that, let's get rid of opticians! It's the perfect solution for everyone obviously! What a ridiculous comment

LellowYedbetter · 03/03/2019 10:42

This is a non issue now. The glasses are fixed, DH and I are talking again and it’s all forgotten about. I’ve also realised I was being unreasonable so point of the thread - achieved! Thanks for the replies

But have you had your eyes tested for driving?

Limer · 03/03/2019 10:47

Gogs? Glasses aren't ugly medical appliances any more, they're attractive pieces of jewellery that also have the benefit of allowing people to see clearly.

OP - go to the optician. You have no idea what you're missing if you can't see properly.

LellowYedbetter · 03/03/2019 10:49

I have an appointment on Tuesday afternoon

howwillwedeal · 03/03/2019 10:49

Good, so if you need glasses either get them or stop driving.

LoniceraJaponica · 03/03/2019 10:58

Well done Lellow. I'm glad you took the advice on board.

Limer · 03/03/2019 11:57

That's great Lellow, please let us know how you get on!

Topseyt · 03/03/2019 12:16

Well done for getting your appointment. Take heed of any advice you are given, and get glasses if you need to. If you are told not to drive without them then stop doing so.

My mother stopped driving over a year ago because she now (at 84) has a problem with her eyes that cannot be well enough corrected. She can see, she can read etc. She can function daily. But, she now has a small blind spot which has been there since cataract surgery about 18 months ago. She mentioned it in a conversation with my Dad and I and we both instantly said "DO NOT DRIVE! What if it meant you were unable to see someone crossing the road and hit them?"

She needed that. I know in my mother's case it is related to age and probably to her recent cataract surgery, but it does demonstrate why you should keep ensuring that your eyesight is good enough if you wish to drive.

It’s reallt sad that you think it’s normal to call each other names. It’s not how marriage is meant to be. Don’t you deserve better than that?

ToftyAC · 03/03/2019 16:36

My OH is clumsy and I’m always worried he’ll break mine. As such I have 4 pairs in total. At the end of the day it was an accident, you apologised so I can’t understand why he’s gone quite so batshit, but hey! People.

VanGoghsDog · 03/03/2019 16:46

I can't afford four pairs of glasses, they are over £500 a pair.

Lwmommy · 04/03/2019 00:13

Another one here who cant have laser surgery. Mother nature blessed me with short sightedness, an optic disc colaboma in one eye and a retina colabma in the other. Already had a detached retina in one eye resulting in keyhole surgery and a replacement lens in one eye and permamemt loss of visual acuity.

Glasses are fine, they do what is needed.

So if your prescription is £500 a go as some are, you have £1500 of glasses not used in case your clumsy OH breaks them? Really?

woollyheart · 04/03/2019 09:20

If you have a fairly straightforward prescription maybe you can afford 4 pairs.

Those of us having to pay £500+ for something that works - no, we can't afford that. I can only afford one pair. I have ones with an old prescription as back up.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 05/03/2019 17:47

How did your eye test go OP?

LellowYedbetter · 05/03/2019 17:49

Better than I expected. I need glasses for reading and computer/tv

OP posts:
BruceAndNosh · 05/03/2019 17:54

Get your glasses and be proud to wear them.
And don't leave them under your ipad!

sequinafortune · 05/03/2019 18:00

If it had been me I'd have got my nicest heels on and smashed the crap out of your ipad. Fortunately my husband isn't a dick and is respectful of my need to wear glasses, so I'll never have to do that!
Obsession... Yeah OK.

LellowYedbetter · 05/03/2019 18:10

Why would you need you put heels on to wreck an iPad? Or were you just trying to be sassy?

OP posts:
TheHodgeoftheHedge · 05/03/2019 18:17

Super. That’s good news OP. You’re very lucky.

VanGoghsDog · 05/03/2019 20:35

Well done OP, welcome to the gog club!

Topseyt · 05/03/2019 21:05

Lellow, Sequina has only read the first page, if that. Nothing in between.

Well done for going for your test. Now wear those glasses (gogs, if you must) and be proud. I suspect that you will be surprised how much easier they make things.

My DH was always proud of his "perfect" vision when we were younger. It all changed with age though and now, at 55, he cannot read or use the computer or his phone without reading glasses.
