Pretending that I did it ...

So.. I am no chef but I can bake.. my OH asked me for a carrot cake sometime soon.. usually I would be happy to run round the supermarket get the ingredients and stand in the kitchen to turn out a half decent baked delight some hours later

But

I’m tired. It’s half term. I’m run crazy with two children with additional needs, no school or nursery breaks and trying to keep the house and I’m on a diet myself ... so I cheated.

I contacted a cake maker ordered the cake and was gutted to see how professional it looked when I collected it today considering how much u paid for it... in the need to make it seem I baked it lovingly for him I brought it home and have roughed it up a little... ( smudges in the Cream cheese frosting, a dent here a dent there and whizzed up some pecans and walnuts and whacked them on top...

Unfortunately the real baker had gone to the effort of making little sugar paste carrot decorations which she seems to have apples with a orange substance so I removed them and will just say I attempted a decoration that failed...

Does this cake look home made but not too fancy/ professional? Why do I even care ? 😂😂 I guess I love him and wanted to give him something he wanted and of course all the thanks of how lovely it is and how hard I must have worked

Do you have any idea how bonkers this is, OP? Grin

I promise I am mentally balanced and in a non abusive relationship

Yeah, yeah, we believe you.

I have to say that the cake looks bloody amazing for £20 - the ingredients must have cost that.

I hope you come back and tell us what happened when you proudly presented it to your DH.

Dodie66 · 23/02/2019 21:01

What will you do if he asks you to make it again?

3luckystars · 23/02/2019 21:01

Its all well and good until he asks you to bake it again.

I did something similar once, my dads very old friend, i offered to cook him dinner. (Thinking he would like a roast chicken) I asked him what he wanted, he said 'home made sweet and sour chicken' I was like 'shiiiiiiiit' as i hadnt a clue how to cook anything like that at the time. (About 20 years ago) So i went to the chinese restaurant and asked them to give me the sauce and all the other bits seperately, and i put them into a saucepan at home. He totally believed i had cooked it, but my sister kept saying 'how did you make this, how? Its AMAZING! Tell me how you made this?' And i was kicking her under the table and mouthing to shut the fuck up.

It still makes me laugh thinking about it.

NettleTea · 23/02/2019 21:01

oooh £20. Im in Sussex too.....

Mrsmadevans · 23/02/2019 21:01

It still looks pro imho can you take it off the board and put some crushed nuts on the sides as well ? l think the smooth icing on the top and sides makes it look pro tbh.

ElliotBoy · 23/02/2019 21:02

Just the craziest thing ever. Screams fragility in the relationship. It's going to take more than a carrot cake to sort this out.

TrixieFranklin · 23/02/2019 21:02

Re the cake board thing. I know you can buy them anywhere but you wouldn't just for a homemade cake to eat at home. If I was baking a cake to take to a party or give as a gift I might buy one. That's just me though!

Amanduh · 23/02/2019 21:05

I did this once with an apple pie 😂😂

Floralmoral · 23/02/2019 21:06

You got a cake like this for £20???!!!!! ShockEnvy

burritofan · 23/02/2019 21:09

I could not just buy one at Tesco as he is a ex chef he knows the taste difference between shop brought and home made

But you could have bought one from Tesco & served it up with the words "I don't have time to bake at the moment but I did pick this up at the supermarket".

BoringPerson · 23/02/2019 21:10

Hmm, I don’t think it looks homemade as it’s too big.

I think it’s funny that you have done this. That’s funny in a hahaha way AND funny in a funny peculiar way. It’s not an awful lie by any means but it’s a bit weird that you want to impress your husband like this. Won’t you feel odd when he praises you for it.

Gligeen · 23/02/2019 21:10

Haha! I’d do that but honestly I’d probably tell him after. I scratched his car once and stood looking innocently agape at it beside him while he ranted. I told him after. Grin

Lovemusic33 · 23/02/2019 21:11

£20 is a great price, I made a cake today for someone and charged £60 🤣

OP, ignore the people who are saying it’s weird. You obviously wanted your dh to think you out in a lot of effort for his birthday and I think you may have pulled it off, hope he enjoys it.

Sizeofalentil · 23/02/2019 21:11

I did this before with a pre-roasted chicken: hit it with the rolling pin a few times, put some herbs from the garden on it and put it in an oven tray to heat up in the oven with some aunt Bessie's

Wauden · 23/02/2019 21:11

I would do that! Grin

WorraLiberty · 23/02/2019 21:12

Will the kids have to lie too OP?

Samind · 23/02/2019 21:13

This post made me laugh 😂😂😂 cheers OP

mummmy2017 · 23/02/2019 21:14

You do know how easy this is too make.

Sorry but i think you should make one with the kids

Aridane · 23/02/2019 21:15

Did you eat the,sugar carrots?

mummmy2017 · 23/02/2019 21:16

Just checked Betty crocker do a packet mix.

Mrsbird311 · 23/02/2019 21:16

A cake is nothing!!! I used to do a “troodos” special when having people to dinner, used to take all our pans and dishes down to the Greek restaurant , they cooked it all and we picked it up just before guests arrived!!! Everything , salad, Pitta bread, pudding, why cook when someone else can do it!!

Readysteadygoat · 23/02/2019 21:18

Do you have cake tins the right size to bake that cake? If not, will he remember? You might do well to nip out and buy 2 cake tins just in case. Or contact the professional and pay her a fee to borrow hers? You'll probably need for a couple of weeks in case the cake is so fantastic he's still thinking about it weeks later.
Don't leave yourself underprepared OP

AlexaAmbidextra · 23/02/2019 21:21

but I have bought pre packaged sandwiches on they way to a couple of birthday parties (the bring a dish type ones!) then cut them in to quarters and roughed them up a little

Roughing up sandwiches made me giggle. I had a vision of the poster grabbing the sandwiches by the throat and pushing them against a wall while uttering threats in a menacing tone. You bastards will say you’re fucking home-made. Get it! 😂

Samind · 23/02/2019 21:22

I reckon you should throw flour over yourself as well ... 😂😂 Maybe put a plaster on a finger where you've grazed yourself from all that prepping ingredients??? Honestly loving this post. I think it's sweet you still care so much and want to please your man.

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 23/02/2019 21:26

I’m going to die laughing if it tastes like dog food.
