So.. I am no chef but I can bake.. my OH asked me for a carrot cake sometime soon.. usually I would be happy to run round the supermarket get the ingredients and stand in the kitchen to turn out a half decent baked delight some hours later

But

I’m tired. It’s half term. I’m run crazy with two children with additional needs, no school or nursery breaks and trying to keep the house and I’m on a diet myself ... so I cheated.

I contacted a cake maker ordered the cake and was gutted to see how professional it looked when I collected it today considering how much u paid for it... in the need to make it seem I baked it lovingly for him I brought it home and have roughed it up a little... ( smudges in the Cream cheese frosting, a dent here a dent there and whizzed up some pecans and walnuts and whacked them on top...

Unfortunately the real baker had gone to the effort of making little sugar paste carrot decorations which she seems to have apples with a orange substance so I removed them and will just say I attempted a decoration that failed...

Does this cake look home made but not too fancy/ professional? Why do I even care ? 😂😂 I guess I love him and wanted to give him something he wanted and of course all the thanks of how lovely it is and how hard I must have worked

I’m loving your stories ladies!

If you're worried it looks too professional just punch it OP. Cake-punching is entirely MN-approved.

Glitterzzz · 23/02/2019 21:28

She’s a highly reviewed baker so I’m not expecting it to taste bad ... tomorrow we will find out !

Next time Betty Crocker carrot cake mix is your friend, much quicker than all the effort you’ve gone to making it seem like yours!

Neverender · 23/02/2019 21:29

Why?

Averysmallcasserole · 23/02/2019 21:30

Tell him you bought it because you’re exhausted, show him this thread, laugh and move on, having first posted the cake to me
It looks bloody delicious

WOW, all the comments about how awful it is that you fibbed about making the cake yourself, like you have such big problems in your marriage. Like no-one here has ever told fibs to their husband/partner! Confused Some big overreactions on here.

At the same time, I agree that you shouldn't have needed to lie. Could have just told him 'can't be arsed, bit tired, will buy one!'

If he is a chef/was a chef, could he not have baked it himself?

notanothernam · 23/02/2019 21:36

Is it his birthday?

TrixieFranklin · 23/02/2019 21:36

Make sure she doesn't post the cake on Facebook and tag you in Grin

Excited101 · 23/02/2019 21:39

I make cakes as a side business and once got asked to make a cake for someone to take to a family gathering as if they’d made it themselves... they supplied a container and everything- I just did it a bit lopsided and more rustic looking!

It’s totally weird though, and unless you can make a cake without much effort,, (which Im guessing you can’t or you would have just made one) yes- it looks to professional.

Glitterzzz · 23/02/2019 21:40

:-) I just want him a photo of it at work... he’s sooo impressed 😂😂😂😂 I said I’m sorry I didn’t use enough cream cheese frosting / got a bit damaged / but you know... I tried 😃😄😄

AnneProtheroe · 23/02/2019 21:41

Why didn't you just buy one from m&s? Having a cake made by a professional is way OTT. Though why you didn't just say to your husband you didn't have time to make him a cake is odd, as others have mentioned.

I’m not being deliberately obtuse here, I promise, but I don’t understand why you’re lying to your DP. Seriously, faking the washing up and everything? Because you want to impress him?

You won’t be impressing him though, will you. The baker will.

I’m genuinely interested in why you wouldn’t just say “Absolutely darling but it’ll have to be next week when the dcs are back at school”. I get trying to impress a new boyfriend when you’re a teenager but this is weird. Confused

Glitterzzz · 23/02/2019 21:42

And yes we have massive cake tins in the house so that’s all sorted ;-)

OP posts:
Glitterzzz · 23/02/2019 21:45

Ffs, I wanted to impress him because he is a very hard working man who works 70 hours a week. After 4 years and children I still love him and want to make him happy and impress him...

If that’s weird then maybe your weird.

Due to circumstances I don’t have the energy or the time so this is a easy and clever idea to make everyone happy ... he doesn’t ask me for much and I wanted to provide it ASAP for him to enjoy. His back is busted, he’s a workaholic and he’s feeling down...

Oh absolutely I’m mentally insane

An ex chef - he'd have an eye for professionally made items, though wouldn't he?

I bet he'd have an inkling...

cantfindname · 23/02/2019 21:47

What's your plan for when he says how delicious it was and asks you to make it again?

sparklefarts · 23/02/2019 21:47

I did this for my ex husbands 40th birthday party.
His parents kept trying to take over and I was insistent that I was going to make one. Turns out I couldn't be bothered so I got one made.
I threw some cocoa powder and flour over the kitchen sides 👍

Costacoffeeplease · 23/02/2019 21:48

Truly bonkers and weird Hmm

MiddleClassProblem · 23/02/2019 21:49

Still don’t get why you don’t think buying him a specially ordered cake wouldn’t make him feel special too...

OP that's such a weird thing to do!

lerrimknowyouretheyir · 23/02/2019 21:51

That’s hilarious. Looks so good. I would probably feel a bit guilty if he was too complimentary though.
Your cake baker needs to increase her prices. That seems very cheap. Spent £80 on a cake for my daughter’s birthday a few months ago from a local cake maker. Blush
