Pretending that I did it ...

So.. I am no chef but I can bake.. my OH asked me for a carrot cake sometime soon.. usually I would be happy to run round the supermarket get the ingredients and stand in the kitchen to turn out a half decent baked delight some hours later

But

I’m tired. It’s half term. I’m run crazy with two children with additional needs, no school or nursery breaks and trying to keep the house and I’m on a diet myself ... so I cheated.

I contacted a cake maker ordered the cake and was gutted to see how professional it looked when I collected it today considering how much u paid for it... in the need to make it seem I baked it lovingly for him I brought it home and have roughed it up a little... ( smudges in the Cream cheese frosting, a dent here a dent there and whizzed up some pecans and walnuts and whacked them on top...

Unfortunately the real baker had gone to the effort of making little sugar paste carrot decorations which she seems to have apples with a orange substance so I removed them and will just say I attempted a decoration that failed...

Does this cake look home made but not too fancy/ professional? Why do I even care ? 😂😂 I guess I love him and wanted to give him something he wanted and of course all the thanks of how lovely it is and how hard I must have worked

That's the same as the beginning of an Alison Pearson book, "I don't know how she does it." She's in the kitchen at midnight smashing up M&S mince pies so that the PTA think she's made them herself Grin

GlitterGlassEye · 23/02/2019 20:39

Tbh if I was your other half and found out you didn’t make the cake I’d wonder what else you were lying about. A fucking carrot cake. I’d have just said emm no, I’ll buy one ta dahh.

HollowTalk · 23/02/2019 20:39

A chef would know a Tesco cake wasn't home made. Anyone can tell that!

frazzledasarock · 23/02/2019 20:39

OK I asked DP what his reaction would be. He said he’d understand I’d bought it as I’ve got loads on currently (toddler and newborn).

However we both think lying about it to your DH does make you sound crazy.

Are you honestly ok OP? Lying about something so inconsequential is so weird.

Ninkaninus · 23/02/2019 20:40

Hmmmm this reads an awful lot like the kind of thing one might post if one were trying to get free advertising/market research/feedback/general opinion on pricing vs. expectation etc.

Anyway...

I really can’t believe you can’t just say to him that you got him a special treat lovingly homemade by someone other than you, since you really couldn’t face baking it yourself, and that you hope he loves it.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 23/02/2019 20:40

The OP is making that all in one cake now......

Namechangedbecauseiwantto · 23/02/2019 20:41

I don't think people that question the amount of subterfuge do need to get a grip. It's a shame that you feel you need to do this, it's not fair on you or your other half. Next time, either say no, or get him or the kids to make one.

Serialweightwatcher · 23/02/2019 20:42

Why would anyone lie about a cake? Odd behaviour

henhousehillbilly · 23/02/2019 20:42

This is pure madness. And not in a funny or good way.

Aridane · 23/02/2019 20:44

Not sure bout all the angst and criticism here - we al take secret shortcuts from time to time surely

Aridane · 23/02/2019 20:46

op- is the cake bigger than the baking tins you have? would that give you away?

TrixieFranklin · 23/02/2019 20:46

I think minus the board it could pass as home made. I'm not saying I agree with your thinking here but thought I'd answer the question. Is he allergic to anything?

WorraLiberty · 23/02/2019 20:47

Shortcuts, yes of course.

Secret? No, why would anyone go to such lengths to lie?

slithytove · 23/02/2019 20:48

Just tell him you bought one but decorated yourself

Sparklingbrook · 23/02/2019 20:48

I don't get why the cake board would indicate not home made. They sell them everywhere.

MiddleClassProblem · 23/02/2019 20:48

Actually I can now see this escalating sitcom style...

DH is so impressed he suggests that you make it for MIL’s birthday next week.

But when MIL hears of it she insists you cook it together so she can learn the recipe.

But when you get to MIL’s she’s also invited 4 friends for the cooking class too as she’s heard the cake is so very special...

In the end you just blame MIL’s oven for the results

Kedgeree · 23/02/2019 20:50

It's far too big to be passed off as homemade. You could feed the whole village out of that. It's a "I'm stockpiling cake for Brexit" type of cake. Nobody would believe you made that just for your family on a random weekend unless you're the old woman who lived in a shoe...

Aridane · 23/02/2019 20:50

Yeh, cake board needs to go

reallyanotherone · 23/02/2019 20:51

£20?!

Please post the link to the bakers web/fb page... i want one!

It’s dh’s birthday next week, perfect :)

JustMary · 23/02/2019 20:54

Did you take a photo of the wrong cake? Those are pecans on the top not sugar paste carrots.

Glitterzzz · 23/02/2019 20:57

Yes ! Cake board is removed! I could not just buy one at Tesco as he is a ex chef he knows the taste difference between shop brought and home made :-)

I’m sorry that this post has made some question my mental state or my relationship. I will let you know how the cake actually tasted tomoz !
