To be so upset....it's only a jumper!

First of all, I should say that my DH is a 'house husband' so he is responsible for all household tasks while I work full time - a mutual choice.

Today, after doing some laundry he told me there had been a bit of a problem but he had followed the washing instructions.....

For my birthday a couple of weeks ago my best friend gave me a beautiful jumper from Jigsaw....he put it in the washing machine and has shrunk it to 5 year old size! Obviously, I pointed out that the label does indeed have a 30 sign BUT it has 2 lines underneath that indicate a wool wash! Also, the label clearly states that it is 97% merino wool!

I googled the jumper and found it in the sale but by the time he had put his reading glasses on and ambled over to look at my laptop it was sold out. I am ridiculously upset and have gone out because I can't look at him. He has not said Sorry, just insisted that the washing instruction wasn't clear. He has offered to buy me any jumper I want to replace it.....but I want that one!

Thank you for letting me rant. Anyone got a grip for me? Or am I entitled to be cross and upset?

Just remembered a second wool disaster actually.... spent about two weeks wages on new and very fluffy lovely experience winter jumpers when I was about 21. Friend begged me to borrow as she was going skiing. Said OK but "DO NOT WASH THEM Yourself, give me them back dirty!".

She washed them - ruined. 🙄 That was practically my entire winter wardrobe. 17 years ago, still remember it but didn't go mad, still friends for years after.

Loopytiles · 24/02/2019 15:49

That must’ve been awful, vinyl! Generous of you to lend them, and then to forgive!

I have stopped buying naice knitwear requiring handwash, as have ruined too many items in 30 degree gentle washes.

Justanotheruser01 · 24/02/2019 16:05

How i got upset over a bloody mug i completely understand how you feel. Have you looked whether its available from any concessions? Debenhams selfridges etc?

GimmeBread · 24/02/2019 16:19

I can see where you're coming from OP. Yes it's only a jumper but it's the lack of care - not just the following instructions but the fact that he won't apologise. You're not looking to punish him (I think! Smile) - just an acknowledgement that he messed up a little.

My MIL was notorious for doing my laundry when she was looking after the kids at home. She thought she was helping but she boil washed and tumble dried EVERYTHING 🤨 She shrunk a brand new crochet top, I wasn't happy but I just replaced it. Two weeks later she did the same with the new one! After that I either had to have all the laundry done or hid it when she came up.

NewPapaGuinea · 24/02/2019 17:24

My favourite jumper got shrunk in the wash. I was immensely annoyed at the time, but soon got over it as I’m sure you will too.

pollymere · 24/02/2019 17:35

Also try John Lewis online. They stock Jigsaw.

ShowMeTheKittens · 24/02/2019 17:48

I was grumpy about a jumper 'someone' washed... still am grrr.
Oh well, sorry. Maybe the jumper will come back in stock.

hurrythefuckupgeorge · 24/02/2019 17:49

Jigsaw have an ebay store which stocks sale items so have a look there OP

Headinthedrawer · 24/02/2019 17:53

I'm a pro at washing but I've still managed to accidentally shrink every single one of my husband's cashmere jumpers over the years. He stopped buying them sometime ago.

NellieDavie · 24/02/2019 17:55

I bought my DP a really nice jumper as a gift one year, about 15 years ago at least. He loved it, I loved him in it, he was lovely to cuddle wearing it. I washed it many times on a cold cycle. Once day he decided to be helpful and shrunk his own jumper. Still remember it now with sadness and it wasn't even my jumper.

Teacher22 · 24/02/2019 18:01

There is a difference between the shock and hurt one first feels when a careless bodge up has ruined something you like and keeping up hostilities.

Once you have calmed down you can reason that it was only a jumper and that you still love your OH.

You could probably get the manufacturer to track one down from another shop.

However, when this happened to me with a precious cashmere jumper I foreswore cashmere and now only buy washable wool.

ChiaraRimini · 24/02/2019 18:04

Sounds like a faulty jumper TBH. It shouldn't have shrunk like that from being washed at the correct temperature. I'd take it to the shop and complain.

Springisallaround · 24/02/2019 18:09

I never knew there were any lines on the instructions or what they meant, I haven't ever managed to keep a cashmere or fancy wool jumper ok so have given up. This would be an easy mistake to make and as everyone says, if it was on 30 degrees it shouldn't have shrunk anyway.

bobdylannumber1 · 24/02/2019 18:14

My DH washed my black wool coating the washing machine if come home from a night out and threw my coat on top of laundry basket he washed it it didn't shrink but it ruined the material.Confused

ToftyAC · 24/02/2019 18:20

I can understand you being upset. But he didn’t do it on purpose, has offered to replace it and, yes, it is just a jumper. Shit happens and you need to just get on with it. It’s not like anyone died.

ittakes2 · 24/02/2019 18:22

why don't you ring the store or a couple of stores and see if they have one in stock? John Lewis and house of Fraser also sell jigsaw.

Dippypippy1980 · 24/02/2019 18:23

My sister shrunk a beautiful jumper of mine many many years ago. She was being sweet doing my laundry - but I was irrationally angry. I still remember the feeling of rage!!

So I totally understand. He made a mistake but to you it seems careless. So annoying the jumper can’t be replaced.

The rage will pass😊. I am sure he feels bad about it

smilingontheinside · 24/02/2019 18:26

I wouldn't need a new jper if my oh did the washing, I'd need a coffin Grin

KarmaStar · 24/02/2019 18:33

It's a non-event op.a simple mistake.would you like a plain or sparkly grip?😊

Ohnonotuagain · 24/02/2019 18:36

This. You can also make shrunk clothes bigger again (Google it) so I think YABVU.

Lets reframe this.

MadAboutWands · 24/02/2019 18:51

As many have said if it was washed on 30 as per the label it shouldn’t have shrunk. Felted etc if not on a wool wash, but not shrunk.

FWIW it’s not experience. There is a major difference between a wool cycle and a normal cycle, even at the same temperature. It’s not aboutbte wool felling. My jumpers (proper Merino wool ones) have always shrunk when put in a normal cycle.

MadAboutWands · 24/02/2019 19:06

Actually speakout I would have no issue if said wife was also used to do all the washing, washing all the wool items and somehow managed not to be careful with that precise item.
Who washes a woolly jumper in a normal cycle and expects it to come out ok? Confused

Basically it comes down to whether it was him not been that careful ‘because really is that that important’ (which is what H wouod have done until he had been told a few times he had to be more careful and being so careless is hurtful). Or is it genuinely making a mistake (because he never washes woolly clothes at all for example)

MummyofTw0 · 24/02/2019 19:09

Yes it's a sh*t. But come on, it's an easy mistake to make

You need a degree to read care labels

Give him a break.

manicmij · 24/02/2019 19:22

Surely something so precious to you should have been set aside to be handwashed. Even handwashing at 30° is a hit or miss. Don't think people realise how cool 30° is. It's only a jumper and would probably have shrunk even on a wool wash.
